Desperate NC State Trying to Lure Coach by Offering Duke, UNC Tickets
SportsPickle.com ^ | April 19, 2006

Posted on 04/25/2006 7:15:45 PM PDT by southernnorthcarolina

Having seen Texas’ Rick Barnes and Memphis’ John Calipari spurn their offers in recent weeks to take over NC State’s basketball team, the school has turned to an unorthodox – but no doubt brilliant – tactic to lure the new face of the program.

“We’re willing to pay top dollar for a new coach to replace Herb Sendek,” said NC State athletics director Lee Fowler, “but so far that hasn’t been enough. So now we’re offering season tickets for both Duke and North Carolina basketball. We’re pretty sure that will do the trick.”

College basketball analysts say NC State’s decision is a major step forward for the program.

“The thing with NC State always has been that they’re alumni, boosters and fans are under the insane delusion that the Wolfpack program is on the same level with Duke and North Carolina,” said Jay Bilas of ESPN. “Of course, any intelligent person knows that idea is lightyears from the truth. But at least this shows they’re starting to come to grips with their reality. It’s basically saying: ‘Come to NC State. Not only will you be close to great programs like Duke and UNC, but you’ll also get to go to their games free of charge.’”

Fowler says NC State’s proximity to Durham and Chapel Hill makes the Wolfpack job very attractive.

“I think a young, up-and-coming coach will be a great fit for us,” said Fowler. “Not only will he be able to put an ACC team on his resume, but by being so close to top-notch schools like Carolina and Duke, he’ll be able to watch them closely and absorb how they do things so he can become a better coach and maybe even win a national championship one day after he leaves NC State.”

And while coaching the Wolfpack will be the job’s top priority, NC State claims it will be open to their new coach’s outside interests.

“Some nights we have games at the same time Duke and Carolina are playing,” said Fowler. “So it’s going to suck for our new coach to have to miss some of their games. But we’re more than willing to be flexible with this. If there’s a really big game he wants to see – like Duke-Maryland or UNC-Wake Forest or something like that – we’ll let him take the night off to see it and have an assistant coach in his place. And honestly, whatever it is that prospective coaches want, we’re willing to do it. Please make sure that goes in the article because we really, really need a coach. It’s getting pretty desperate around here.”

Bilas thinks that with all of NC State’s new selling points, it won’t be long before their new coach is announced.

“NC State is a great job,” said Bilas, “because good schools like Duke and North Carolina are only a short drive away.”

The Duke lacrosse news isn't the only university-related story going on in the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill). College sports have become big economic and social influences, and many in the area are following this story with interest.

If you are hiring someone out of a college in the Triangle area, make sure they went to NC State. UNC and Duke grads are useless.

North Carolina is just an all around bad place to live.
IMNSHO.
The natives are nice, but are few and far between.

I bet you're just loving this aren't you? Just remember, Roy won't be around forever (bet he doesn't carry as much cash to courtside as Dean did either...). Sooner or later Carrboro Community College is going to have their down years....

As I read this I was thinking this must come from some site akin to The Onion. And it seems that it does.

If you go to the source, it's a site that claims to be a "sports humor and satire site".

Thank goodness! This just seemed too absurd to be true ... although these days one can't be too sure.

I notice you don't have the nerve to put YOUR STATE flag on your FR home page so the rest of us can criticize your state.

One good thing about living here is you're don't.

I think not only the free tickets (which is a GREAT idea,) but they could also buy him a coke at halftime.

Now THAT would seal the deal for me!

Aww, come on, bb. This is high comedy. You can't wear a clown nose, then get all huffy if people laugh at you. Poking a little fun at one's rivals are what rivalries are all about. I seem to recall that the Anybody But Carolina crowd had a lot of fun during the Doherty disaster.

Of course the shoe will be on the other foot some day. Don't begrudge us a little fun while we have the opportunity.

As it happens, I have almost as many ties to NCSU as I do to my alma mater, UNC -- two siblings graduated from State, a niece and a nephew are currently enrolled, my late uncle taught chemistry there for years. I do not wish for, nor do I predict, long-term harm to State's basketball program. But, come on -- the situation is humorous. Is NCSU really going to pay a $3 mil buyout, plus a salary substantially higher than Herb's, to get an older version of Herb?

Yes, of course it's satire. Pretty well done, too, of you can overlook the glaring grammatical error ("they're" rather than "their") in the fourth paragraph. I hope it wasn't written by a UNC grad!

If NC State gets Beilein from West Virginia ... as is the hot rumor today ... they are getting one fine basketball coach.

Season tickets to the UNC, Duke games is a big deal.

A few months ago I tried to get tickets for a jock relative's visit.

Went online, cheapest ticket I could find was $1300.

I think Herb was a fine coach and NC State made a huge mistake dumping him.
If I were a coach and offered the job, I'd think twice, three times before accepting the position.

Oh I know it is. And we did give y'all some grief during Matt's short tenure. What's irritating is that apparently no one wants the job. Which affects recruiting and there's no one even halfway decent it seems that wants the position. Which will affect recruiting for years to come when their losses start to rack up.

my late uncle taught chemistry there for years

Please, please tell me your uncle's initials weren't G.G.L.

Nope. His initials were W.R.J.

To me, Uncle Billy.

Alright then ;) I was there in the late 80s. The head of the Chem department wrote the book (classroom and lab) and couldn't teach worth a flip. There was only one other professor that taught Chem 101 at the time and everybody wanted him instead.

West Virginia's Beilein Not Headed To N.C. State

UPDATED: 7:23 pm EDT April 26, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- For the past week, N.C. State's search for a new men's basketball coach has focused on former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and West Virginia coach John Beilein. Now, it appears that both men are out of the running.

I live in North Carolina, currently.
Have done so for almost two years.
I have met many FReepers on various "occasions", but have failed to encounter you.
I am returning to Florida.
Please make a note to remind me to create a homepage next month, Howlin, since it seems to be a matter of concern to you, and is obviously not a thing I place any priority on.
