A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Laughter in the Bank

I started out with nickles, pennies, and a dime,
Collecting them and putting off some pleasure for a time.
“Anticipation” kinda whets your appetite, you know,
And in the meantime little piles of coins will surely grow.

So then I started thinking that if coins can be put by,
Then why not give some really fun things their own try?
I’d heard of confound interest and how it makes things grow,
And now I think my little bits of treasure will soon show.

I’ve been saving up my chuckles, my giggles, and a smile,
In hopes I’d have a good collection in a while.
I’m going to put this laugh in there and keep it for my own,
Because I know I’ll treasure it when I’m more fully grown.

An Elephant in My Pajamas

I saw an elephant in my pajamas,
I wanted to shoot the thing!
First off, they were all stretched out,
And I think he lost my string.

The one that holds the pants up.
I know I’ll need it now.
The elephant in my pajamas,
Didn’t need the string somehow.

I’ve got to find a home for him,
Let’s hope the Zoo okays.
‘Cause then I must go to the store,
I need some new PJ’s.

Chicken Soup

My nephew had a poultry farm! (His stock just numbered two.)
He planned to breed some more of them, but then one got the flu.
Now, Medicine is not his strength, but he worked for the group.
He nursed the sick one back to health. He fed it Chicken Soup!

That’s right, he killed the healthy one, to make the sick one strong.
And you may think this makes no sense, but then you have it wrong.
For business, it’s crazy, but that’s not where he leans.
He’ll be a whiz with all the biz of Government Machines!

Where this new math can operate, increases are called cuts,
And taxes are investments. In other words, it’s Nuts!
My brother’s son will fit right in. He thinks that way a lot.
If you call, and you hear strange advice, my nephew’s who you got!

Apples and Wine

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree.
Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren't as good, but easy. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they're amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who's brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

Now Men .... Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it's up to women to stomp them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

What better way to celebrate your birthday than to give! I bet you'll end up with beaucoup of presents and well wishes before the day is over. Let's see you'll be what 27, 28?

I'll go to the store and get a cake and eat it for you. I warn you though it will be fattening - double, triple quadruple intense heavenly devils food cake with equally wonderful icing and just for kicks some vanilla and strawberry ice cream. You understand I have to eat it for you because you'd have to wait to long for it to arrive and the ice cream will have melted by the time it got there.

Oh, if only one of Heinlein's portals where available. East Coast to West Coast in 10 minutes! Think I'll read Stranger in a Strange Land again for the 10th time. Although Lazarus Long is such a neat guy.

"... Lazarus Long is such a neat guy."

Hah-hah! Lazarus Long is a stinker! He has to have been the dark, curmudgeonly side of Heinlein.

Hmmm. I've only read Stranger about eight times, but I have both versions. Maybe it's time to read it again.

I tried to look something up in a Heinlein book once, and I realized I had forgotten so many other details, it was almost like a fresh read!

Word Play

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is UP. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. We start UP a project before we finish it UP. When irritated, we sometimes tell others to let UP, lighten UP, or shut UP. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP. And then there's check UP, give UP, shake UP, clear UP, make UP, cover UP, put UP, grow UP, cheer UP, break UP,.........One could go on and on, but my time is UP, so I'll wrap it UP.

So, What’s UP Amy???

Life Is Real

Read:
Psalm 56

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. —Psalm 56:3

Bible In One Year: 2 Samuel 21-22; Luke 18:24-43

cover In the comic strip Peanuts, Lucy had just broken the news to Linus that children cannot live at home forever. Eventually they grow up and move away. Then she said that when he left she would get his room. But Linus quickly reminded her that at some time she too would have to leave home. When this realization hit Lucy, she was shocked, but she quickly came up with a solution. She turned the TV up loud, crawled into her beanbag chair with a bowl of ice cream, and refused to think about it.

Avoiding unpleasant circumstances is not as easy as Lucy thinks. Life's realities cannot be avoided. We may try to run and hide, but struggles and trials have a way of dogging our footsteps and eventually catching up with us.

Instead, we should face up to our problems. The psalmist David did this when beset by persistent foes and false friends. He didn't try to minimize his danger; he acknowledged the storm that was raging around him and looked to the Lord. He wrote, "In God I have put my trust" (Psalm 56:4).

Let's follow David's example—not Lucy's. Facing up to life's difficulties may be a frightening experience. But when we trust God and draw close to Him, we'll experience real deliverance. —Paul Van Gorder

Whatever life may bring your way
Each hour of every passing day,
Throughout the months and long years too,
The Lord in heaven will care for you. —Anon.

When troubles call on you, call on God.

This video of a French-speaking musician playing classical music is unbelievable...by beeping a variety of horns attached to his bodysuit!!

What an unusually imaginative and spectacular talent!! Definitely a Maestro!!
