April 24, 2006 - A former CIA officer who was sacked last week after allegedly confessing to leaking secrets has denied she was the source of a controversial Washington Post story about alleged CIA secret detention operations in Eastern Europe, a friend of the operative told NEWSWEEK.

The fired official, Mary O. McCarthy, “categorically denies being the source of the leak,” one of McCarthy’s friends and former colleagues, Rand Beers, said Monday after speaking to McCarthy. Beers said he could not elaborate on this denial and McCarthy herself did not respond to a request for comment left by NEWSWEEK on her home answering machine. A national security advisor to Democratic Party candidate John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign, Beers worked as the head of intelligence programs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff and later served as a top deputy on counter-terrorism for President Bush in 2002 and 2003. McCarthy, a career CIA analyst, initially worked as a deputy to Beers on the NSC and later took over Beer’s role as the Clinton NSC’s top intelligence expert.

The next step is to attack the accuser. This is classic Dem strategy.

Who confirmed it?

Jim Angle in his report and they also had a woman whose identity I didn't catch, but she seemed to be with the CIA or some government agency.

I really don't see how this would get her out of this mess even if it's true, she still admitted to releasing classied material to a news source. That's illegal.

She did sign that documents regarding not releasing classified documents.

Seems to me they can get her on that. It must be a felony.

There's a lot of bad information circulating about this case. To address your point, the "form" in question is called an SF 312, non-disclosure agreement. Failure to live up to this form can result in loss of a job, loss of a security clearance, and (I believe) the possibility of civil penalties. But this form isn't used for criminal penalties. If she's going to be prosecuted, the government will have to show that laws were broken.

Caller (I missed his name or position) to Mark Levin's radio program who apparently is 'in the know' says McCarthy had one of the highest level security clearances -- she had access to much of the 'most secret' stuff.

Here is the first report...

A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media.

Note the use of HE....and notice he was CAUGHT leaking....

CIA officials will not reveal the officer's name, assignment, or the information that was leaked. The firing is a highly unusual move, although there has been an ongoing investigation into leaks in the CIA.

One official called this a "damaging leak" that deals with operational information and said the fired officer "knowingly and willfully" leaked the information to the media and "was caught."

IMHO....there is a second leak we know nothing about..

prosecutors could still put together some kind of case against McCarthy from evidence untainted by the CIA polygraph inquiry that led to her firing

A polygraph doesn't "taint" other evidence. This is not a fruit of the poisonous tree situation.

Also remember that NEWSWEEK is owned by the Washington Post Company. No doubt they are pulling out all the stops to protect their Pulitzer Prize.

I say toss the book at her. Put her in GITMO because that is where we have a number of enemies of the state and keep her there until the investigation is complete or all the leaks are plugged.

By golly, you may be right. I took the "he" stuff as the reporter just not having a name yet, but that may not be the case at all.

I don't know how getting out of leaking that one story would help her either. What I don't get is why she isn't sitting in prison right this second. The very question asked on the John Gibson show.

My husband and I are becoming more convinced every day there is a two tier justice system in this country and we aren't happy with it. But once Sandy Burger skated, it became evident.

This passage caught my eye..

The CIA officer was not in the public affairs office, nor was he someone authorized to talk to the media. The investigation was launched in January by the CIA's security center. It was directed to look at employees who had been exposed to certain intelligence programs. In the course of the investigation, the fired officer admitted discussing classified information including information about classified operations

Oooooooooo...I think I see another dot coming into focus..
