April 24, 2006 - A former CIA officer who was sacked last week after allegedly confessing to leaking secrets has denied she was the source of a controversial Washington Post story about alleged CIA secret detention operations in Eastern Europe, a friend of the operative told NEWSWEEK.
The fired official, Mary O. McCarthy, categorically denies being the source of the leak, one of McCarthys friends and former colleagues, Rand Beers, said Monday after speaking to McCarthy. Beers said he could not elaborate on this denial and McCarthy herself did not respond to a request for comment left by NEWSWEEK on her home answering machine. A national security advisor to Democratic Party candidate John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign, Beers worked as the head of intelligence programs on President Bill Clintons National Security Council staff and later served as a top deputy on counter-terrorism for President Bush in 2002 and 2003. McCarthy, a career CIA analyst, initially worked as a deputy to Beers on the NSC and later took over Beers role as the Clinton NSCs top intelligence expert.

"The officer has acknowledged unauthorized discussions with the media and the unauthorized sharing of classified information," said CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano.
I want to report that Mary told me that Bill and Hillary Clinton gave her 11% of their annual salary in order to regularly divulge informaiton from CIA files that she thought would be damaging to the Republicans and helful to the Democrat National Party. Just wanted to let you all know. Ciao.
This backing-off spin is not surprising. Of course, the media are more than willing to assist. It's 'the meaning of is' all over again.
Nevertheless, I wonder if Mary took the bait on a false story? So the CIA could find out who was doing the leaking to the NYT and WAPO? If this was a sort of internal psy-op setup, she could be the little fish that becomes bait herself for bigger fish.
But, if they had other info on her, the so-called "dead-to-rights" stuff, then her confession would have probably have been witnessed by a lawyer and she is in the process of copping a deal.
Look at all those white people involved in this thing!! All Democrats too!
She failed a polygraph. Even if she isnt the one who told Priest, someone did with leaked information. If this was a sting, and that info was farmed out to individuals with variances in the story line, and hers was the version that came back, she's busted..
What an ugly woman.
Yes, just confirmed on Fox.
Who confirmed it?
It will be absolutely b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l if there are no such prisons but Goss baited a trap with it to see which rat they'd catch.
Hmmm, just like Sandy BURGLAR...he also confessed and look what he got, a slap on the wrist
Has she taken lessons from John Kerry? This flip flopping on her confession is really something.
Bahbah I think there be another one...a "he"
Very scientific and detailed, yet I add that she was/is a 'contruting-Democrat' supporter and, therefore, coupled with a failed agency-adminstered polygraph (which I have taken) IS a LIAR, plain and simple....
Another what? Leaker? In the same case, or another one?
".......because the polygraph evidence was likely unusable, any effort by prosecutors to make a criminal case against McCarthy would therefore have to be based on an entirely fresh reconstruction of evidence from other sources. The sources indicated that it was possible, though by no means certain, that prosecutors could still put together some kind of case against McCarthy from evidence untainted by the CIA polygraph inquiry that led to her firing."
