April 24, 2006 - A former CIA officer who was sacked last week after allegedly confessing to leaking secrets has denied she was the source of a controversial Washington Post story about alleged CIA secret detention operations in Eastern Europe, a friend of the operative told NEWSWEEK.

The fired official, Mary O. McCarthy, “categorically denies being the source of the leak,” one of McCarthy’s friends and former colleagues, Rand Beers, said Monday after speaking to McCarthy. Beers said he could not elaborate on this denial and McCarthy herself did not respond to a request for comment left by NEWSWEEK on her home answering machine. A national security advisor to Democratic Party candidate John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign, Beers worked as the head of intelligence programs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff and later served as a top deputy on counter-terrorism for President Bush in 2002 and 2003. McCarthy, a career CIA analyst, initially worked as a deputy to Beers on the NSC and later took over Beer’s role as the Clinton NSC’s top intelligence expert.

It is a rather small but influential group, isn't it? I am not surprised there are connections...they all go to the same schools, belong to the same organizations, and attend the same cocktail parties. They are a clique...just like high school days, and their behavior is rather similar.

According to Robert Mueller, the FBI is also investigating leaks at the CIA:

"We do have investigations going," Mueller said following a visit to the FBI's Charlotte office, which oversees the agency's operations in North Carolina. "Leaking of classified materials is a concern for those agencies that have classified materials."

.....I don't think anything will come of it either.....

I watched parts of the Godfather yesterday. While Christening Michael's God Child the Corleone organization exterminated all his enemies in one simultaneous series of raids.

W says "at a time and place of my choosing"

The initial time was the moment of the firing. I believe there will be hell to pay. FBI files or not.

The flashing neon theme for Republicans to learn (can Republicans learn?) from the Bush years is FIRE ALL THE DEMOCRATS.

I can't believe how stupid the W. administration has been in leaving Clinton appointees in high places. Unbelievably stupid.

although he's [Bush] so cozy with the Clinton's

Ever hear of "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"?

Don't forget , "W" is from Texas - I'd advise you not to play poker with him...

On the other side, I find this "so cozy" intimation unsettling.

A long time ago (maybe a year or so), Senator Wayne Allard was on television (CSPAN) on morning journal. I called in and got through. I asked Mr. Allard what was the status of the Rockerfeller memo (it was around the time that Hannity had revealed that memo). Mr. ALlard told me that Rocky and the memo had been referred to the Ethics Committee. The Ethics committee will refer items to the DOJ, if warranted. So perhaps all of this relates back to that and the talker right now is Rocky himself??? (Hey, I like to get into the conspiracy game too)! None-the-less, the outing of Mary McCrathy as a traitor is a good step, and her name was probably released so as to catch more of the damn democrats who are working to undermine our country.

I say prosecute the traitor.

Yeah, I've got no problem with a prosecution. It might take awhile, and the SF 312 isn't going to provide any help. But she might see a jail sentence in the future -- works for me.

My deepest hope is for something different -- I mostly hope that Americans get a sense for which party is serious about fighting this war, and which party isn't. I think this McCarthy matter will help throw light onto this difference -- it's already been helpful.

And the media yawn along with the public. I'm with Peach and believe this is a mountain on FR and a molehill elsewhere.

ATTENTION! Rand Beers was employed by the CIA as a career employee, aka CIVIL SERVICE. The President was prohibited, BY LAW, from firing him simply because he was a democrat.

President Bush replaced all of the political appointees in the first year of his administration. Civil Service employees are protected from firing unless there is "cause," such as theft, embezzlement, unauthorized leaking of classified material, etc.

I am getting really tired of seeing this attack on the President for not "firing all of the democrats," when, if he had done so, it would have been grounds for impeachment.

One more time: it is against the law to fire civil service employees because of their political affiliation.

If the media was yawning, you would for sure not see CNN writing a stroy like this one below. The media aren't yawning, they are scared to death. This investigation, the others that are ongoing and the Libby case will be the sinking of the MSM if they try and ignore.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/24/cia.firing/

They know this. Right now, they are going day by day and trying to judge how bad the damage is going to be with these investigations. Once they see the writing on the wall, they will report this story and others grudgingly.

If this isn't treason, then it's high time we found out what treason really is, by having a trial and running it up the chain to SCOTUS.
Treason: Violation of allegiance toward one's country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies.

If there is no sovereignty, treason is meaningless.

If there are no borders, there is no sovereignty.

Is anyone getting it yet?

I appreciate your point. However, I can't imagine walking into the Oval office and finding out that my "..top deputy on counter-terrorism..." is a guy from the last administration and there is nothing I can do about it. Mechanics aside, this is simply not how it works.

I don't remember any similar pattern of ex-Bush1 employees REPEATEDLY throwing the Clinton administration into turmoil.

Oh, and Richard Clarke? He was Civil Service?

I am so disgusted with the lack of media coverage. The only way Bush will get any coverage for this is if he adresses the nation in prime time and announced that arrests are being made as he speaks.

And even then, they will cover it as "retribution for criticism."
