IRVINE, California (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday he doubted a "massive deportation" of foreigners living illegally in the United States would solve the country's immigration woes, as he tried to revive prospects for an election-year agreement in the divided U.S. Congress.

Senators returned to Washington on Monday from a two-week recess after Democrats and Republicans were unable to reach a compromise on what to do about an estimated 11.5 million to 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.

Well, he is familiar with it. $100 billion here, $100 billion there, and none of it normal operating expenses. Don't know if the ship is sinking, but it is listing to port.

"The only valid argument in favor of stricter immigration laws are the ones relating to terrorists. But they fall flat too. In fact, terrorists can come here legally and easily from Yemen, Saudi Arabia, ad nauseum, on airliners through airports etc."

Ah, I get it...you recognize the problem, but because it's a big problem, we should do nothing about it. Ok, thanks, got it, right.

Do you really think that Mexico will allow such internal turmoil caused by massive deportations?

And what makes you think that Mexico has veto power over U.S. sovereignty? Other than GWB, that is.

Mexico is a wealthy, corrupt, third-world disaster, that has kept its own people destitute. Their "internal turmoil" should be their problem; not illegally imported to US.

I dislike the idea of a fence or wall,

Well, who doesn't?

but every way I come at this issue leads to either this or open borders.

Yup. A fine mess we've gotten ourselves into, Ollie!

My suggestions as to a course of action come from direct experience on the border, working with BP agents and plain old common sense.

Make it a felony to be in-country illegally, put the owners of the companies using illegals in jail, cut off the free healthcare and welfare, get rid of the anchor baby b.s. and the criminal illegal alien invaders will be driving those shiny new pickups and Blazers right back across the border just as fast as they can get through the lines at the bridges.

I see nothing wrong with these suggestions and in fact, this would only require thte strict enforcement of current law and the correct interpretation of the constitution to resolve the issues of the anchor babies. Perhaps I would be a bit more sympathetic to their issues if I was not being told by the little b******s to get off the continent.

That ain't gonna happen, my family came here before there was a united States of America, and we ain't about to leave now that a bunch of illegals fell for some commie propaganda.

Of course you can post any opinion you like here (within reason) as long as you follow `ol JimRob's rules. We were all new here once...

"...or else we will lose big."

I found the following in my in-box the other day from a long time activist (as in reliable GOTV worker) in response to an e-mail about setting up a Republican HQ for the upcoming election cycle in a heavily Republican area. Check it out:

Dear Sirs: Please remove my name from your mailing list. ... it's become evident that El Presidente Bush has dismissed his, and our, values and has sold out the American people to whoever is there. ... I am fed up and am going to remove my name from the lists of the Republican Party. I never thought I would see the day when elected members of Congress would sell out, and abandon, the American people in favor of foreign interests. That sad day is now here, they are all, in my opinion, cowards, opportunists, and worse, and should be thrown out of office. Until that day arrives, I QUIT!

The Chamber of Commerce set is going to burn the Republican party to the ground over this issue, big time.

No one(sane) is even advocating mass deportations!!!
Tighten the borders and tighten the screws on employers that hire ILLEGAL immigrants and these ILLEGALS will find their way home

But law abiding hard working? Dubya is right again. Temporary workers is the way to go.

YEP, it is working so well now. I mean these already here "temporary workers" are waiting in line like they are "suppose to", leaving like they are "suppose to", doing all those little things "required" of them. These people of integrity are exactly what we need. And... send the bill to Mr. & Mrs. American Citizen... courtesy of President Right Again Bush. Plus, we know who is coming across the border... little lettuce pickers. Nobody who would dream of harming Americans.

Nothing illegal crossing our borders.

see 149...that is where I stand at this point.

Mass deportations make some fanatics smile but make no sense otherwise.

IN what way does the analogy to totalitarian methods NOT reflect the yells of certain fringe elements who are calling for all illegals to be rounded up...how is that different from the actions of Nazis and Commies?

Well for one, we are not sending them to death camps. I am sure there are others but that little tiny difference kind of sticks out to me....

The only answers I see from everyone here is to lock everyone up and build walls around the U.S.

This is half right, half wrong. Most around here do not want to lock up the illegals. They want them sent home and would be happy to allow them to apply for citizenship legally.

At the same time, they want border enforcement that will actually work. Walls are the start. Actually enforcing the laws that are on the books is another step.

I have a question for you. What do think should be done? You call yourself a moderate and claim these positions will not work.

If you had your way, what would YOU do?

I agree, that "massive deportations" will not solve the problem. Much like an infestation of ants, the most effective way to get rid of unwanted illegal aliens is to make the US an unpleasant place for them, so they'll want to leave...

Of course, the first step is to secure the borders. Next, make the illegal aliens want to leave. For instance, ICE doesn't need to go looking for illegal aliens. Simply go to where they congregate. If an illegal alien goes to a hospital, they're treated for something life threatening, then handed over to the authorities and deported. If an illegal alien shows up for school, they're handed over to the authroities and deported. Make it so difficult, and expensive for employers who hire illegal aliens, that the job market dries up for illegal aliens. 1st offense, fine them enough so it hurts. 2nd offense, fine them so hard that they might just lose their business. Third offense, jail, and they DO lost their business. Cut off all social services to illegal aliens. And for minor children of illegal aliens who are American Citizens, well, they can come back when they're 18, without their illegal alien parents. Finally, once the borders are secure and the majority of illegal aliens have left, THEN we can start to talk about a "guest worker" program.

For the most part, model the rules on what Mexico does to their illegal aliens. And when he squeals like a stuck pig, ask ol "Vinnie the Fox" why those rules are good enough for his country, but not for ours?

I still think they should all be inducted into the armed services, and deployed to Iraq and other strategic locales in the middle East. If they serve the U.S. well in the service, they can earn citizenship upon discharge. Pay would be better than pickin' peas. They'd get room, board, duds and spending money for the duration. Hard to beat that.

Inducted? As in drafted? No way! Do you want to give those protesters guns? However, should any volunteer, that should be considered, and I'm a very strong believer that anyone who volunteers to serve this country should be given special treatment if they want to become citizens. I think that it's a shame that there are many non-citizens who are serving in the military, and once they get out, find themselves being leap-frogged by the illegal aliens who'll be getting amnesty.

Oh, for crying out loud, listen to yourself, Dane. You're comparing a deliberate campaign of extermination, by sending legal, Jewish citizens to death camps, with our sending gate crashers back to their country of origin, where they can apply to return through through proper legal channels.

This will no doubt be highly offensive to Jewish people.

The posting to which this reply refers has been removed for a while. However, there are some posts, no matter how offensive, that I feel should be left on the boards so that they can become objects of desision, as can those who post that sort of nonsense.

I've seens some of the replies, but not the original post, although I've gotten the gist of what Dane posted. The more he posts, the more people realize what an idiot and moral relativist he is.

You are so right. If IFCO had to pay a fine of $1,000,000 for every illegal that ICE rounded up last Wed., they'd be out of business. Now THAT would have been a much more effective symbolic gesture than rounding up 1,200 illegals and deporting only a palty 250 and letting the rest go. After all, the government seizes ALL property of drug dealers who are violating our laws. Why should employers of illegals be given special license to ignore US law?

If massed deportations of Mexicans start, there will be mass denial of entry in Mexico .

Once Mexico refuses to admit the forcely-repatriated millions, there will be mass issuing of work permits to these illegal aliens, turning then into de facto legal immigrants.

Do you really think that Mexico will allow such internal turmoil caused by massive deportations?

Maybe the US should print up comic books in spanish to help them get back into their own country. And maybe the US government and military should actively help smuggle them across the border. If it was good enough for Mexico, it should be good enough for us!
