Social Security Number Verification Verify Social Security Numbers Over the Internet

Overview There are two Internet verification options you can use to verify that your employee names and Social Security numbers match Social Security's records. You can:

Verify up to 10 names and SSNs (per screen) online and receive immediate results. This option is ideal to verify new hires.

OR

Upload batch files of up to 250,000 names and SSNs and usually receive results the next government business day. This option is ideal if you want to verify an entire payroll data base or if you hire a large number of workers at a time.

While the service is available to all employers and third-party submitters, it can only be used to verify current or former employees and only for wage reporting (Form W-2) purposes.

Why Should I Verify Names and SSNs

Correct names and SSNs on W-2 wage reports are the keys to the successful processing of your annual wage report submission. It's faster & easier to use than submitting your requests on magnetic media or paper listings or even using Social Security's telephone verification option. Results in more accurate wage reports. Saves you processing costs and reduces the number of W-2Cs. Allows Social Security to properly credit your employees' earnings record, which will be important information in determining their Social Security benefits in the future.

Is there any reason that any employer can't verify the illegal aliens social security number?

If the farmer, builder, etc are hiring illegal aliens, they can use their Blackberry or other PDA to check out the social security number!

Email your senators and Congressman the link to this Web Site & remind them of this functionality!

There is no law that employers must use SSA's systems, so they don't. Also SSA's verification systems are not 100% accurate. If you want to know more about this, go to SSA's OIG Office of Audit Website, review the Employer Suspense file (ESF) reports from the last 10 years, the verification systems are discussed and illegal aliens. There is also probably a report that discusses the Employer Verification System.

The verification system verifies that the name and SSN are valid, it doesn't verify that they belong to the worker. Many workers work under stolen names and SSNs or their childrens names and SSNs.

That's special. Someone can match your name and SSN up using a government website tool.

Great tool for identity theft!

Well why doesn't the government flag it went more then one name is starts reporting under an SSN.... Because they don't care.... I went to my state tax board (in CA) some years back to get copy of w2 going back for 5 years and and found out there were other people reporting under my SSN...it's right their in the state computer, more then one name reporting under the same SSN ....it would be easy to have thet system run a report and chatch these people....but nnnnnno!..... I ask about it ant the state workers response is they (the state) neither report it to you or do any thing about it... they do nothing

No, that's not how it works the worker gives the employer their name and SSN and the employer is registered with SSA to use their SSN verification service. SSA runs the information through the service and then tells the employer if the SSN is valid. That's all, SSA doesn't "match SSNs and names for people".

It's better than nothing. Maybe not much better but it'll weed out the truly stupid ones.

Besides, we gotta start somewhere.

Many people have reported their wages under a similar but different name, employers make a mistake reporting and mix the last name with the first names, people have alias names. People accidentally mix up their SSN. SSA has some amazing programs to fix these problems. If you want to know what you are talking about go to the SSA OIG website and read their reports fixing these problems is a huge but ongoing effort for SSA.

You're right the State doesn't care, the State is not responsible for SSN corrections they have absolutely no access to SSA information, you must contact SSA, they make corrections to your SSN record.

They CAN, but are they required to?

I'm sure they do what is required only at most.

Right now, it's not required.

I'm thinking that making it a requirement was part of the Senate bill that Frist wanted to introduce...but I may be wrong.

Make it required.
Make local law enforcement bound to arrest illegals.
Take away Federal funding to cities that declare themselves sanctuaries.

Many people have reported their wages under a similar but different name, employers make a mistake reporting and mix the last name with the first names

Yes the can be some variation in how the same name is reported

But when you walk in to a state tax board, ask for a print out of you w2 and have them hand you a computer print out with both your very own, very Anglo name and, and someones elses very Hispanic name, that has absolutely no similarly bween each other (it's no typo variation) and the two names are reporting employment and income in to completely different parts of the state at the same time.?.. It's not hard for the state to get a clue...

Add to it that the state employee didn't bat and eye and acknowledge up front that yes it look like an illegal was using my ssn, yea it's common, yea we know it and yea we don't do any thing about it and no there no state agency to report it to....

And that my only recourse was to contact the employer of the person using my SSN to complain to them.... but state was not allowed to tell me who that employer was..... well...

Just out of curiosity, did you have an inclination this was happening before you contacted the state tax board for your W-2's? I've heard the only way you can be tipped off is by the Social Security statements sent out once a year. It's unbelievable that absolutely nothing is done about this.
