WASHINGTON - Two federal agencies are refusing to turn over a mountain of evidence that investigators could use to indict the nation's burgeoning workforce of illegal immigrants and the firms that employ them.
Last week, immigration cops trumpeted the arrests of nearly 1,200 illegal workers in a massive sting on a single company, but they admit that they relied on old-fashioned confidential informants and an unsolicited tip to get their investigation going.
It didn't have to be that hard.
The IRS and the Social Security Administration routinely collect strong evidence of potential workplace crimes, including names and addresses of millions of people who are using bogus Social Security numbers, their wage records and the identities of the bosses who knowingly hire them.
But they keep those facts secret.

It has to do with damage. The IRS and SS are from their view, suffering no damage. If you had a guy who was sneaking up to your mail box taking out a letter and putting a $100.00 in and resealing it before slipping it back into the mail box I doubt you would be calling the cops to come get him.
It is human nature that we react to that which causes us damage but tend not to react to that which benefits us.
This (the way things are currently done) benefits them. If you want it to change then you are going to have to threaten enough damage to outweigh the benefit.
Sports teams often ask for Social Security numbers. Davidson says that this is a common source for child identity theft.
Child-care programs, too, require detailed identity information about kids in their care.

From Mexico? Hey, just because they're illegal, doesn't make them stupid. I have no doubt that even as we speak, the ACLU is preparing a case in eager anticipation of some leftist federal judge to declare that to deny them benefits would be "unconstitutional."
Unless they crack down, Idendity Theft is going to get out of hand!
When compared to illegal immigrant criminals, in the eyes of the government, Americans are second class citizens.
Felons all!
Sorry you had to go through that! See my post #42 about idendity theft.
You are right, but as someone mentioned earlier, their coffers are being filled with SS$ that will help balance their books.
There are ways their basic mailing information can be accessed and evaluated to identify companies that hire large numbers of illegal aliens.
The deal is that crooks are also greedballs. Having their new illegal alien workers sign up for a bond-a-month program allows them to get their hands on that much more of the wage they are paying them, and also to trick IRS into thinking this is a legitimate employee.
Whether the scam is played by a small business trying to claim a fake employee, or a larger company trying to create false identities for illegal aliens, the mechanism is pretty much the same.
I don't believe this information is covered by any privacy laws.
Nothing will get done until Congress and the Senate get tough on Illegal Immigration.
Someone from ICE should give him a call. Then contact me and I'll lead them through the details (not all of which were in my post).
"Thank the Dems. Thank AARP."
Neither the Dems nor the AARP have controlled Congress for the past 12 years and the Executive Branch for the past 6.
The Republicans are MORE guilty, because they command ALL of the levers of power.
You can request a report directly from Equifax, Experian or Trans Union.
I know there are sites that offer free credit reports online, but I'm not sure about what they are really selling.

Colleges are now assigning a student ID number which is not the ss number now. There has been a lot of problems with identity theft on campus.
I don't think it is mandatory. I got mine in the 9th grade. Our social studies teacher said it was time. We were young and dumb and just filled out the forms. I have read some anti-tax info that says the original law stands that you do not have to have a SS# to work. The problem is finding someone to hire you without one. lol
Having worked for the INS for a full career, I recall when the SSA did, in fact, share information regarding the work of suspected illegal aliens with the INS, information that was derived from reports and taxes paid to the SSA by employers. It proved to be a reliable source of information for the most part. But, during the reign of Jimmy the C., this practice was ended, and it has never resumed. In fact, relations between the agencies became downright hostile despite the massive Social Security fraud, and wilful hiring of illegal aliens nationwide.

Great article. HR 4437 would close this loophole.
