THE iconic US actress Bo Derek has been appointed as special envoy of the Secretary of State for Wildlife Trafficking Issues.
Derek, best-known for her role in the 1979 feature film "10", appeared at a ceremony at the US State Department and said she was honoured to accept such a "daunting" role and to do her part to help save the environment.
"I know my participation in this is going to be small compared to people actively working in the field, but I might be able to help with public awareness," said Ms Derek, dressed in a black pant suit and white shirt.
She said she will be working with a coalition that is trying stop the illegal trafficking of wildlife, a soaring market worth $US10 billion a year.
"The Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking (CAWT) will help educate people around the world that their quality of life is diminished, not improved, by purchasing endangered and threatened wildlife products," the 49-year-old actress, a staunch Republican, said.
CAWT is a global coalition the US government is seeking to build to focus public and political attention on the problem of wildlife trafficking.
Among the organizations that have joined this coalition are WildAid, Save the Tiger Fund and the Smithsonian Institution.
well, happily, others have made up the lack ;)
handsome woman, that, even now.
Rachel Corrie couldn't handle stress.
Her last words were "No more pressure!"
The success of the movie "10" made her an international star overnight. She could have written her own ticket in Hollywood, but instead turned over the direction of her career to her husband, John, who promptly put her in nothing but a bunch of crappy movies that required her to to do nude scenes. Which destroyed any shred of credibility she had as an actress, however little.
Point of Order:
During the course of Bo Derek's ~ career, she travelled thoughout much of the world, not just Africa !
I would put Elizabeth Hurley in the "20" category.
Pity she didn't travel a bit more DownUnder!
Speaking of, Rachel Hunter, who is from New Zealand, is in the '20' territory !
Elizabeth Hurley has seen her better days !
While that's true she has a solid record of supporting conservative agendas and the Republican Party while striving professionally in an environment where her peers see that as justification to treat her as a pariah. Since her husband's passing she has done good work - and she wouldn't if she didn't care (as John set her up well).
Nothing from the end of the "Tarzan" movie?
A great post. Doing what you don't have to do shows heart. I don't know if Bo can sing. If she can, I'd like to have a "cover" by her of a song by another Republican babe, Connie Stevens - "That's just half of 16 reasons why I love you."
And who have the Dems got? Hitlery, Pelosi and Helen Thomas!
We win by a knockout!
Young people don't know what music is anymore. They've pretty much succumbed to the MTV agenda of (c)rap - tribal syncopations accompanied by lyrics extorting materialism and base vulgar behaviors.
All's not lost...I saw some youngsters playing modern rock at the carwash I maintain and asked them why they listened to that while most of their peers listen to Rap. "Dude, rap is crap!" They had band instruments in their vehicle and so justified why we must insure that music education is continually financed. Those boys and I had a nice conversation about Bach, the Beach Boys, Queen and Kid Rock. They thought Eminem was a punk who was biding his time before an inevitable gang hit because he pretended to be a hard-core gangster.
Good news about those kids you mentioned.
Thanks much, but once again my lunacy has diverted a thread from its intent. Ms. Derek has been appointed to an ornamental, meaningless post that she may turn into something relevant - as the awesome Audrey Hepburn did with hers. Time will tell.
I'm glad Bo Derek's a Republican, but I was rating those actresses based purely on their watchability on screen, not evaluating their politics or personality off screen. (That's why I rate Susan Sarandon an 18 -- she's very beautiful and very good at acting. But if I met her at a party I'd have no interest in talking to her.)
Are you saying that there are no actresses out there who can act better than Elizabeth Hurley can? You're only allowed to give 10 points for looks.
Such a beautiful WOMAN. Conservative too ... let's see, at sixty I should be just about the right age for her! Hey Bo ...
