Cleric's 'Chilling' Fatwah (UK - 5/9/06)
Updated: 16:12, Tuesday May 09, 2006
A man once dubbed Osama bin Laden's "right-hand man in Europe" allegedly issued a fatwah justifying the slaughter of children.
Radical preacher Abu Qatada has been appealing against Government attempts to deport him. Ian Burnett QC, arguing to have him removed from Britain, told the Special Immigration Appeals Commission that Qatada had provided "religious legitimacy" for terrorist activities.
The barrister claimed: "In March 1995, the appellant issued an influential fatwa that justified the killing of the wives and children of (the Algerian authorities). "This is a chilling document which provided a spurious religious justification for the slaughter of women and children."
Mr Burnet said Home Secretary John Reid considered Jordanian Qatada, 44, to be national security risk. The cleric once called on British Muslims to martyr themselves in a holy war on oppression. He had links with shoebomber Richard Reid and Zacarias Moussaoui, the "20th hijacker" in the September 11 atrocities who was imprisoned for life last week.
Tapes of Qatada's sermons were found in a Hamburg flat used by some of the September 11 hijackers. He has been convicted in his absence in Jordan of involvement with terror attacks in 1998, and of plotting to plant bombs at the millennium. Qatada, whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman, was arrested as a terror suspect in south London in October 2002. He has always denied claims that he is al Qaeda's European ambassador.

I regard those who prey on the defenseless and innocent lower than the worst murderer.
Unfortunately, in the eyes of these lunatics, women and children who do not think like they do are not considered "innocent". I still wish someone would push that question when a rep for Fatah or Hamas is on the talk shows.
Virgin Atlantic cabin crew who came into contact with the woman have been told to monitor their health. One said: "We are now terrified what we may have caught." Deadly ebola is often characterised by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. .
would sure like a follow up on this. How many of those passengers were US bound.

With its easy sharing of jokes, gossip, photos and videos within a virtual community of young people, the Web site MySpace.com has rocketed to second place in worldwide popularity, with an estimated 78 million users.
But the site also has brought concerns about teens meeting strangers online. And now there's a new worry: a "phishing" scam that experts say could compromise teens' -- or their parents' -- financial information.
As with other phishing scams, in which con artists create realistic-looking Web sites using the names of well-known banks or other corporations, the MySpace scam tricks people into going to a copycat page and signing on. Once the user gets on the site, their computer can be infected with software that can later capture keystrokes typed while visiting legitimate banking or shopping sites, said Hiep Dang, director of threat research for Aluria Software, a division of EarthLink and a member of the Digital Knights fraud prevention group.
Looking for credit card numbers
Scam artists can use computer programs to sort through the captured keystroke information, looking for sequences that appear to be credit card numbers, PINs or passwords. Other scams involve MySpace profiles that are completely fake and lead to links that can infect your computer, Dang said.
Todd Davis, CEO of LifeLock, a company that sells identity theft prevention services, says such scams can cause years of hassles for victims. Stolen identities are sold on the Internet for as little as $20.
MySpace has recently been in the news because of concerns that younger users may be unwittingly exchanging personal information with older strangers. Earlier this month, a 27-year-old Naperville man was charged with felony indecent solicitation of a child and a misdemeanor charge of distribution of harmful material after allegedly trying to arrange a sexual tryst with a 14-year-old local girl he met on MySpace.
MySpace spokeswoman Dani Dudeck declined to comment. The site cautions users to omit information that would make it easy for a stranger to find them and urges people to report identity theft, cyberbullying, inappropriate content and other types of abuse.
I remember that incident.
Thank you for the update.
Will be interesting to see how that one pans out.
Glad to hear she's wearing an "ankle bracelet".
Police Look for Motive in Carnival Crash (Southfield, MI)
Monday, investigators were working to find out why a man plowed his minivan into a crowd at a school carnival over the weekend. Nine people were hurt in the bizarre accident.
Seven children and two adults were injured when a minivan drove through a carnival set up between the Alex and Marie Manoogian Schools and St. Johns Armenian Church in Southfield.
The children had broken bones and bruises, one woman underwent surgery for a broken pelvis and another suffered two crushed ankles.
People at the school and church said they dont know the suspect, so they cant imagine his motive.
High school Principal Hosep Torossian said, "We have never seen him. We dont know who he is. [We tried] to identify obviously his license plate number and we called 911 and they were able to apprehend him. He has absolutely no contact with the school community. We basically dont know who he is."
Police arrested a 34-year-old man at his home in Troy shortly after the accident.
School administrators believe the man drove through the crowd deliberately. (snip)

Hezbollah may activate sleeper cells
WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- As concerns rise over Iran's nuclear program, U.S. security agents reportedly fear the Hezbollah terror group may be planning to attack U.S. cities.
The New York Post, quoting sources, said the Lebanon-based fundamentalist Islamic group may be planning to activate sleeper cells in New York or other big cities. The investigation is being carried out by the FBI and the Justice Department.
Quoting law-enforcement and intelligence officials, the newspaper said about a dozen hard-core supporters of Hezbollah have been identified in recent weeks as operating in the New York area. The Iranian Mission to the United Nations also is being watched.
But U.S. officials also told the newspaper there is no intelligence information pointing to an imminent attack by Hezbollah.
The stepped up security activity comes after reports that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had met with leaders of Hezbollah and other terror groups during a visit to Syria, the report said.

Man Dies After Being Doused With Lye
NEW YORK -- A businessman died after someone doused him with lye as he arrived to open his restaurant in the Bronx.
Rehmatullah Azezollah was sitting in his car waiting for his partner to arrive to open the restaurant, Lincoln Fried Chicken on East 149th Street, around 10 a.m. Saturday when he was attacked, police said.
His 23-year-old son, Humayun Azezollah, was questioned by police in connection with the incident but was later released. They reportedly had argued earlier about Rehmatullah Azezollah's plan to take a second "wife" and over the father's concerns that the Afghani-American family was getting too Westernized.
Police said the son had been arrested earlier this month for allegedly assaulting his father. Friends said the elder Azezollah also was the target of another attack last week when several men beat him. Police said they had no information on that assault. (snip)

"al-Qaida" claims Gaza assassination attempt
The claim is in wide circulation. It originated on the al-Faluja forum, was quickly copied to al-Mohajroon, and from there it spread through-out the jihadi network. Subsequent critiques of its content resulted in the original copy being deleted from al-Faluja.
The statement is deemed non-credible by analyists, scholars and jihadis alike.
Hamas and its affiliates in Gaza remain the most likely suspects in the current wave of assassination attempts.

Records of 26.5 Million Veterans Stolen
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
"The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has recently learned that an employee, a data analyst, took home electronic data from the VA, which he was not authorized to do. This behavior was in violation of our policies. This data contained identifying information including names, social security numbers, and dates of birth for up to 26.5 million veterans and some spouses, as well as some disability ratings. Importantly, the affected data did not include any of VA's electronic health records nor any financial information. The employee's home was burglarized and this data was stolen. The employee has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Appropriate law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the VA Inspector General's office, have launched full-scale investigations into this matter. Authorities believe it is unlikely the perpetrators targeted the items because of any knowledge of the data contents. It is possible that they remain unaware of the information which they posses or of how to make use of it. However, out of an abundance of caution, the VA is taking all possible steps to protect and inform our veterans.
The VA is working with members of Congress, the news media, veterans service organizations, and other government agencies to help ensure that those veterans and their families are aware of the situation and of the steps they may take to protect themselves from misuse of their personal information. The VA will send out individual notification letters to veterans to every extent possible. Veterans can also go to www.firstgov.gov
as well as www.va.gov/opa to get more information on this matter. The firstgov web site is being set to handle increased web traffic. Additionally, working with other government agencies, the VA has set up a manned call center that veterans may call to get information about this situation and learn more about consumer identity protections. That toll-free number is 1-800-FED INFO (333-4636). The call center will be open beginning today, and will operate from 8 am to 9 pm (EDT), Monday-Saturday as long as it is needed. The call center will be able to handle up to 20,000 calls per hour (260,000 calls per day). The Secretary of Veterans Affairs R. James Nicholson has briefed the Attorney General and the Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, co-chairs of the President's Identity Theft Task Force. Task Force members have already taken actions to protect the affected veterans, including working with the credit bureaus to help ensure that veterans receive the free credit report they are entitled to under the law. Additionally, the Task Force will meet today, 22 May 2006, to coordinate the comprehensive Federal response, recommend further ways to protect affected veterans, and increase safeguards to prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents.
The VA's mission to serve and honor our nation's veterans is one we take very seriously and the 235,000 VA employees are deeply saddened by any concern or anxiety this incident may cause our veterans and their families. We appreciate the service our veterans have given their country and we are working diligently to protect them from any harm as a result of this incident."
Terrific! My husband is in that database. Just watched a program last night (CNN) called How to Rob a Bank -- on how people steal out identity and get rich.... it was scary as all get out.
