Poland marks 63rd anniversary of WWII Warsaw ghetto uprising Canadian Press

Radek Sikorski and religious leaders of Poland's Jewish community, flanked by Jewish Second World War veterans, laid flowers and prayed Tuesday to mark the 63rd anniversary of the doomed Warsaw ghetto uprising.

Several dozen officials and local residents also lit candles and said the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, at the monument to the heroes of the ghetto struggle during observances held on the eve of the anniversary.

On April 19, 1943, hundreds of young Jewish fighters took up arms in the first major act of armed civilian resistance against the Nazis, who invaded and occupied Poland in 1939.

The insurgents opted to fight the Nazis in the face of the German plan to exterminate the tens of thousands of Jews remaining in the ghetto.

The Soviets did not target Poles for distruction. They targetted the bourgeous and various political groups for destruction. This meant that Polish ethnic Poles, Jews, Ruthenians, Germans, Hungarians, ... were all killed.

Many of my family were sent to Gulags including my maternal grandfather. My father's partisan group was sold out by communist partisans. My father had a rather unpleasent stay at a Concentration (ie work you to death) camp before being "liberated" by the Soviets. Of course, the Soviets, who had stole out property in 1939, did not return it in 1945.

Should I go on and speak of Jewish Bundists, Zionists, and others who were marked for death?

If you wish to blame anyone look at the idiot Colonels who ruled Poland after Pidulski's death. They embraced anti-Semitism and redefined Polish nationalism as anti-Semitic.

Teh Polish communists played their own game of having high profile Jews, so they could blame ALL Jews for the evils of communism.

Mostly you're right. But Polish commies didn't have to play any games to make sure that were Jews among them. There were plenty of Jews among them without nobody's help. Oh yes, finally both nationalist commies and 'Jewish roots' commies quarrelled in March 1968 and the first ones asked the latter to leave the country.

Of course there were many Jewish communists. Jews were drawn to many radical groups. The purported Jewishness of some communists made them appropriate scapegoats for the crimes of the party.

Exactly. As I said Jewishness of commie elites in post-war Poland was for part of Polish nationalist commies a good reason to remove a political competitor. Slogans of their supposed 'Zionist tendencies' was just a handy tool to get rid of them from the country. But this was a commie family rumble. Nothing more, nothing less.

Jews came to Poland in the late Middle Ages. No one further came to Poland after the Chmielnitsky massacres, and as soon as the transport links got up and running in the 19th century Jews continually left Austrian and Russian Poland for Western Europe, Vienna, and the Americas in large numbers.
