Poland marks 63rd anniversary of WWII Warsaw ghetto uprising

Poland marks 63rd anniversary of WWII Warsaw ghetto uprising Canadian Press

Radek Sikorski and religious leaders of Poland's Jewish community, flanked by Jewish Second World War veterans, laid flowers and prayed Tuesday to mark the 63rd anniversary of the doomed Warsaw ghetto uprising.

Several dozen officials and local residents also lit candles and said the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, at the monument to the heroes of the ghetto struggle during observances held on the eve of the anniversary.

On April 19, 1943, hundreds of young Jewish fighters took up arms in the first major act of armed civilian resistance against the Nazis, who invaded and occupied Poland in 1939.

The insurgents opted to fight the Nazis in the face of the German plan to exterminate the tens of thousands of Jews remaining in the ghetto.

The terrible thing is that there were people saying "Don't make trouble, it will only bring trouble".

Collecting money to buy weapons, putting pressure on U.S. government.

You know, things like that.

I hate to burst your bubble. My father was there. Most able-bodied Poles stayed right there in Poland and were delighted to collaborate with the Nazis. There were limited exceptions and they are honored at Yad Vashem in Israel. But the general rule (and you can ask my father and any other survivor from Poland) but it's a close argument as to who hated the Jews more: Poles or Germans.

The general rule was that on Soviet occupied areas Jews turned in Poles for Siberian exile and generally welcomed commie ideology with open hands. Everybody there will tell you that. My father as a Siberian expat knows something about that. Of course there were limited exceptions to collaboration and outbursts of insane hatred like the ones in Koniuchy or Naliboki. It's a close argument who hated Poles more: the Jews or the Germans.

Well, as for now, I see no evidence that the Germans hate the Poles. As for others...

Olmert & his cohorts have their own political agenda which seems to include attacking Sabra's who demand defending the national security of Israel from Islamic death cultists.

Speaking of Islamic death cultists, this gathering could have been a golden opportunity to clean up Gaza, a little.

Masked Arab terrorists from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an armed offshoot of the former ruling Fatah faction, talk to reporters during a press conference in Gaza City, Tuesday April 18th, 2006.

I understand where you are coming from, but do consider this.

Between the Nazis and the Soviets, the majority of the Polish intelligentsia, which were the more liberal parts of Polish society, were wiped out.

After that, many able bodied Poles were out of the country, and they were fighting the Germans in every theater.

The Poles that were left, were kept in a constant state of fear, don't forget many Gentile Poles faced the same fate of their Jewish brothers. And many of the Jews would identify themselves as Poles. Why is it that people forget that?

So the Home Army might have been representated by more anti-semites than had Poland not been ravaged by the war. The more liberal parts of Polish society were not around anymore to lessen the anti-semitic influence, thanks to Hitler and Stalin.

War brings out the best and it can bring out the worst in people. And the fact is, there was a reason that Poland had the highest Jewish population of any European state before the war. Because Poles were more tolerant than most other states, why do you think Hitler wanted Polish intelligentsia wiped out? They had been compiling names of these Poles years before Fall Weiss, so that they could quickly be rounded up, before they could be of any aid to the Jews.

Just some things to consider.

I don't want to offend you, JewishRighter, but I really don't know - whether you're showing your historical ignorance, when you say something like "Most able-bodied Poles stayed right there in Poland and were delighted to collaborate with the Nazis., or it's just some kind of your anti-Polish resentiment.

Try to read some of these, maybe it'll show you those events from different perspective (altough I doubt it, as it seems to be rather a matter of belief, than a matter of knowledge).

You people have a serious problem with anti-Polonism.
Remember that like one of your buddies has recently written on this forum : what goes around, come around.

You're 100% right.

When posting this thread I didn't expect, that someone was going to "commemorate" the heroes of Ghetto Uprising in such a way.

But when someone is posting slander about my nation - it's difficult to stay calm and not to react.

To the Poles on this thread: There seems to be some guilt in this country (U.S.) related to the American inaction during the Holocaust (and even such actions as the turning away of Jewish refugee ships.) This guilt expresses itself somewhat irrationally in blaming others for this calamity, and the Poles, Ukrainians, Lithuanians and Esthonians make for handy targets since they were there, and after all, the Germans are our allies now.

"The general rule was that on Soviet occupied areas Jews turned in Poles for Siberian exile and generally welcomed commie ideology with open hands."

Simply not true. As a siberian expat, your father would not know what was going on in the Russian zone. Poles, as a general rule, were not accorded the "luxury" of imprisonment in Siberia. The Russians simply killed or imprisoned them where they were.

As for Jew "welcoming commie ideology with open hands" that's a laugher. Commie ideology called for the destruction of the Jews. The only exception you will find is that the early idealogues among the commies were Jews: a handful of people at the top. By WWII, they had all been wiped out, in Stalin's purges during the thirties.

Don't try to appease him. They have their own agenda and will push It no matter what. His father "was there" probably as much as mine is a chief rabbi of Jerusalem.

True, Stalin was just as anti-semitic as Hitler. It's just that he was ruthless against so many other groups as well, that it tends to get overshadowed.

You're not offending me. You're just wrong. Again, my father is a survivor, his best friends are (or were) all survivors and I grew up in a town where the majority of the Jewish population were survivors. Every single one will tell you that the great majority of the Polish civilian population viciously hated the Jews and showed it when the Naxis came to town. So for me, it is not a matter of belief, but the best empirical knowledge you can find.

You can refer to the exceptions and they make inspiring stories. But they represent a tiny, tiny number relative to the whole.

Germany paid Israel money Poland will never pay (heck why). But there are other ways to make you lose money than taking it out directly out of your pocket (vide your comment). Anyway I don't think it's good idea for Israelites to look for more enemies than they currently have. Poles know Jews well and are nasty enemies to have.
