Sept 11 film 'too close' for Kiwi victim's family

16 April 2006 By TONY WALL

New Zealand September 11 hero Alan Beaven is to be immortalised in the first Hollywood movie about the terrorist attacks, but his Auckland family will not rush to see the film.

Beaven's brother, Ralph Beaven, said the idea of watching a film of his brother's ordeal was traumatic.

Universal Studios is soon to release United 93, which will focus on the United Airlines flight which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania before it could reach its intended target in Washington DC, thought to be the White House.

It is believed the hijackers failed in their mission because a group of heroic passengers, including former Auckland University student Beaven, stormed the cockpit. Beaven will be played in the movie by British actor Simon Poland.

A year after the 2001 attacks, Beaven's wife, Kimi, revealed to the Sunday Star-Times that her husband's remains were found in the cockpit of Flight 93 and his voice was on the cockpit voice recorder.

The film, to open on April 28 in America, has ignited debate there over whether the country is ready for such a vivid portrayal of the attacks.

When a trailer advertising the film was played at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, audience members began calling out, "Too soon!"

The trailer contains news film of one of the planes about to hit the World Trade Center, and a cinema in Manhattan took the rare step of pulling it from its screens after several complaints.

"One lady was crying," the manager told a local paper. "I don't think people are ready for this."

Ralph Beaven said he would not go to the cinema to watch the film. "For me personally, I'm not sure I'd go along, I think it would be a little too close to home. I don't want to go down that track again.

"It would be very emotionally charged, especially seeing someone else represent your brother."

He said he might consider watching it later in the privacy of his home, if it was issued on DVD.

His brother had been an environmental lawyer in San Francisco who had fought for the underdog against big corporations, and who did not seek the limelight.

"He was not the sort of person who deliberately set out to have a lot of publicity. He was a down-to-earth Kiwi, he wore jeans and jandals."

Beaven said he had never received official word as to what exactly his brother's role was on the flight, and he believed Kimi Beaven's belief he had fought with the hijackers was conjecture.

I didn't see any of them. I go to movies to be entertained not to watch other peoples suffering. Besides, was any of that America's suffering or recent events of Americans being butchered. No

Do you think that way also when the media tries to show the coffins of our military coming home from the war?

Information regarding the terrorists intentions was able to reach the passengers. This is one aspect they did not plan for. As a result, and at a price too heavy for the heart to bear, we still have whatever target was intended at the time - most likely the White House.

>>>Frankly, in this context, I am happy to see a movie that has, by all accounts, a fairly straightforward and factual treatment.

You have not seen this movie yet, all the intel has not been released yet, and all the enemies have not been named yet.

So how can you make that statement?

I intent to stay at home, that seems to upset some people that I won't put my money in the pocket of hollywood taking advantage of the death of those on this flight.

>>>And yes, Donald Duck was in WW-II. Served bravely and well and was given honorable discharge.

I proudly own every Disney and Snafu propaganda film.

Look forward to buying Valient.

I heard that 10% of the proceeds are to be given to the Flight 93 memorial fund. I plan to see this movie, although I'm sure it will be just as hard to watch as the Passion of the Christ. It's hard to watch a movie when you know how it ends.

The trophy to Mecca Memorial?

Do you have a link about that?

I can't understand your reasoning on this one, Freebird. By your logic, Saving Private Ryan 'took advantage' of some deaths on Omaha Beach.

So how can you make that statement?

My statement refers to all accounts. I guess, if I wanted to be abundantly clear, I would say "all accounts that I have seen", since I have not seen all of them. But the accounts that I have seen indicate that the treatment is fairlyl straightforward and factual. Haven't you seen the same accounts?

If we wait for all intel to be released and all enemies to be named, we will never see anything about 9/11. In your opinion, what is the critical intel and who are the enemies that you are referring to.

In any case, you can rest assured that the anti-War left will not be at all shy about using the attacks of 9/11 to make their points. I don't see why they should be given a monopoly on the subject.

> With all due respect, why do we care what victims' families think about this film?

We care because we have due respect. But they should not have the last and final word on the matter. 9/11 happened to all of us: even those of us who aren't American. And all of our worlds changed permanently as a result.

No it is not the same as Saving Private Ryan.

Universal Studios is an international community member of the Gay & Lesbian Fund and the Soros Foundation.

They provide funding and support for Victory Fund financial cofounded by David Mixner.

http://www.victoryfund.org/clientuploads/documents/Victory_2003_E-Resolution.pdf

Page 25 specifically says The Gay & Lesbian Fund provides financial support to openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender candidates and officials.

Soros and Mixner monies can be traced back to el-Husseini and Francois Genoud from the Holocaust and looting of their victims.

These monies have funded our enemies, the anti war movements from Vietnam through now, funded weapons, Cuba, Iraq, WTC'93 and WTC'01.

And God knows what else.

These people funded 9/11 and now are making it a popcorn event. AND will profit from it, once again.

And since you just admitted that we don't know all the accounts of Flight 93, how will this 'interpretation' be used for tainting juries for upcoming trials?

After years of watching Hollywood spew forth every type of perversion imaginable while calling it "art", I feel quite comfortable saying that if anybody doesn't want to see this film, they should feel free to stay home.

dern well said.

So nobody is allowed to talk about anything until all information has been discovered and all the potential trials have been concluded?

If I see a movie that I don't like, I criticize it (witness my postings from when Moore's film came out). If I see a movie I like, I support it. By all accounts I have seen, this looks like a movie I can support.

What I will not do is say a film-maker should not deal with a subject altogether. We live in a free society with freedom of expression. This situation leads to a lot of nonsense, and some truth. It is our job, as individuals, to sort through the mess.

Our freedom is our greatest strength.
