Newt Gingrich: Immig Failure Could Hand Dems Congress
NewsMax ^ | 4/16/06 | NewsMax

Newt Gingrich, the architect of the 1994 GOP Revolution, is warning that Republicans in Congress better "get their act together" and pass tough new laws against illegal immigration - or the Democrats will win back the House and Senate in November.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," the former House Speaker scorched his successors for a lack of performance across a whole range of issues, but zeroed in on what he called "the debacle two weeks ago on immigration."

"The [Senate's] McCain-Kennedy bill and the compromise that followed is so far from what the average American wants," Gingrich said, "that it raises the danger of Republican [voters] staying home."

The one-time top Republican noted that in poll after poll, the public has demanded tougher border security and reforms like a voter ID card, saying it would be easy to put Democrats on the defensive on the illegal immigration issue.

"I'd be perfectly happy for the Senate Republicans to bring up a border control bill and have Hillary and Schumer try to stop it," Gingrich told Fox.

"Sometimes incumbents forget that we were sent here to reform Washington, we were not sent here to be co-opted by Washington," he added. "For Republicans to succeed in '06 and '08 we need real change."

"The question for Republicans in the next 90 days is: Are they going to become the party of real change?" Gingrich said. "Are they going to learn some lessons and get their act together?"

He is the best public speaker the GOP ever had.

What exactly were you doing when Reagan was in office?

"Thus giving aid and comfort to America's enemies."

RATs or RINO enemies, can't tell the difference anymore?

"Nobody thought the "Contract with America" had any chance in 1994."

Unfortunately, the GOP abandoned it.

I am for anyone willing to deport the 20 million illegal aliens. outside of course of dems, cause they are just hot air.

but seriously, this illegal immigration thing should have been dealt with decades ago. It is on the shoulders of every congressperson, senator, and president since after Eisenhower.

If Republicans would grow some brass ones, and actually secure the border, the crossover support from the same bloc which was known as "Reagan Democrats" could drive a huge wave of support for the GOP.

Nobody gets it in Washington.

BUILD THE STUPID FENCE. Right now.

"People forget that there is a WAR going on and much of this other stuff is a political side show."

I would submit that there are TWO wars going on. One we are winning and one we are not. Losing either of them ends our way of life. Because one is a shooting war, which we are winning, and one isn't is no reason to diminish the inportance of the non-shooting one.

Yeah, I don't care for him at all because of his personal morals (or the lack therof) but he is right on this one.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE PUBBIES IN CONGRESS? NO KAHONIES?

When Republicans fail to pass tough immigration laws, what they're doing is this: they're courting the votes of NON-citizens more eagerly than the votes of CITIZENS.

How many here think it plausible that if naturalized the new "Americans" would vote Republican instead of for the party mostly likely to back nationalized healthcare, etc?

Of course, that's completely implausible. In fact, Republicans risk NOTHING by toughing their stance against illegals. It's akin to Democrats fearing the "loss" of the Mormon vote over their liberal stance on gay marriage; the Mormon vote was never theirs....

But Republican leaders will hide under their bed from the monster of angry illegal alien voters. So current citizens will simply NOT vote for Republicans. And so Republican leaders will actualize the defeat that they live in fear of.

The kennedy/Specter/Mccain bill was a set up so the GOP would self destruct IF they pass it.

And the Republican "leadership" has forgotten that in a war, the first thing you need to do is secure your nation's borders. Just wait and see how people will yell and scream when someone sneaks a nuke or a dirty bomb over the Southern border and detonates it in a major US city. We'll have hundreds of thousands of people dead and wounded, but hey, at least we won't have to pay $6 for a head of friggin' lettuce, right?

I am sure the RATs said the same thing about the 73 seats they lost in 1994. I can sum it up in one word for me, DISGUST. Another factor, anger at G W & RINO betrayal, it is a bridge too far.

Great... and the Dems will vote on party lines for impeachment of Bush ... the rest of the Presidents time in office will be spent dodging Dem attacks and testifying because he stood by Liberty and Freedom when it was under attack and the hate Bush crowd will scream and be heard.... Iran will obtain Nukes... Israel will be obliterated.... We can expect dirty bombs and suicide attacks in the cities of the U.S..... No one will protect us... Will Hillary rise to the occasion... Will Harry Reid protect us.... No we will cow tao to the terrorists Until Millions of Americans are dead and the cries of the defeated U.S. will echo on the Elburz mountains.... This is the begining of the end my friends....all over people who are willing to see the bigger picture...Just like the DPW deal.... The conservatives will be their own undoing...

Being a voter in Silicon Valley, CA, I will have no crisis of conscience voting for third-party candidates this year -- whether I vote Republican or third-party or don't vote at all, Democrats will again overwhelmingly win every seat on my ballot.

My heart goes out to voters in other areas of the state and other states -- your vote matters; either you vote for somebody other than a Republican to send a message and make it easier for another socialist to win a seat, or you vote for a Republican and they assume that they've done an acceptable job.

Listened to Krauthammer on Fox earlier. He had a couple of observations. He believes that many who oppose the McCain-Kennedy bill would be a little more disposed to support it if we were serious about stopping the flow of illegals. His suggestion, build a fence 10, 15, 20 feet, whatever it takes from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. On the day the Golden Post is driven, then we can talk about guest worker programs and amnesty. Further, he said, if there is a guest worker program for those already here, it is not a ticket for your wife, brother, sister, mother, father, uncle or aunt back in the home country to come to the US. But first build the fence.

Fox had one other statistic -- only one-third of the illegals are from Mexico, the other two-thirds are from other central and SA countries (plus some Arabs, that we also know).

Does the lessons of Vietnam War mean anything to you, it was all politics that led to that debacle.

"that it raises the danger of Republican [voters] staying home."

Our own poll here on FR bears this out. A lot of people will be pi$$ed off enough to stay home or throw their votes away.

Actually, I fully expect that to be addressed, maybe not everyone's complete satisfaction, but addressed nonetheless.
