2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."

the message is sinking in..how many senators will join him?? This issue will keep the GOP in control or will loose the House for the GOP.
Well, at least he gets it. Few others in DC seem to.
My hope is the the 2008 nominee will be Allen, but I would be happy with Tancredo or Pence. I have a feeling that the VP nominee will also be one of these three.
I am leaning towards, "George Allen in 2008!"
Allen has a winning issue if he plays it right. With border security, War on Terror, pro-choice and low taxes coalition he can win in the primaries. But he has to show a little fire in the belly. No one will ever call him overwrought.
Bravo to George Allen for stating this. Hopefully, the senate will follow through.
Remove incentives and secure the border. Let people repatriate themselves since they can no longer support themselves here.

Actually, now we have approximately 20 million in the country illegally and Twenty years from now we're going to have 50 million. Two years ago they were saying there were 20 million, but now they don't want to panic the populace, so they've shrunk the number. Those protests are telling a different story. When they can get half a million out in just one city, it must be far worse than anyone suspects.

Potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate Sen. George Allen (Va.) declined Wednesday to support the idea of a fence separating the United States and Mexico, but said he would back a guest-worker plan as envisioned by President Bush.
In an exclusive interview with Human Events, Allen passed on the opportunity to take a firm stance on immigration reform -- likely to be one of the key issues among Republicans in the 2008 presidential sweepstakes.
When asked directly on whether the United States has the capability to build a fence along our border and if it was his top priority, Allen said building a physical barrier was only “worthy of consideration.” He cited economic concerns with installing such a security measure and said he supported comprehensive policies that included a guest-worker program.
Below is the exchange I had with Allen yesterday.
Q. Does American have the engineering capability to build a fence along the border that would keep people out?
SEN. GEORGE ALLEN: Do we have the engineering capability?
Mmmhmm.
ALLEN: I suspect so.
Q. So, this is the follow up, why don’t we?
ALLEN: Because it would be -- I don’t [think] it’s worthy of consideration. The reason is, while something might be able to be done at an enormous cost to the taxpayers if there are more effective ways of doing it other than a fence, whether it’s with surveillance and more personnel, and surveillance--
Q. Are you in the camp of those supporting the “virtual fence” idea?
ALLEN: I think a virtual fence would be much less costly to the taxpayers. I think the key thing, regardless of virtual or actual fence, which would take a long time. Let’s assume we wanted to build the Great Wall of America, which can be done, it would take years and years. I’m watching the Woodrow Wilson Bridge being built here, which is a much more difficult task than building a wall. It’s not over a river. The key point is to make sure we have a workable, legal, guest-worker system in this country not rewarding illegal behavior. Not this don’t ask, don’t tell--
Q. Do you support closing the border first before we do guest worker or do you think they go hand-in-hand?
ALLEN: I think you need to do all of them. You need to do all of them.

Wrong. We have 20 million now .... twenty years from now we're going to have 60 million. It boggles my mind that while the federal government constantly seeks more and more power, they demonstrate clearly that they are incapable of administering the power they already have. SECURE THE BORDER NOW!. Any 'comprehensive' plan can wait until after they play their disgusting blame games leading up to the November elections.
