2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."

"It seems like a lot of people here disagree with us; however, none of them can offer a viable alternative."
McCain anyone? He's supposedly the frontrunner. Or Giluani. And Rice says she won't run. All the above are to the left of Allen.

I don't think we knew about his pro-life caveats before we elected him in 2000.

"If Guliani or McCain decide to get into the race, they'll be hard to beat. They can lose some Republicans because they'll pick up a lot of moderates and even some Dems."
Last I checked, independants and Dems don't vote in Republican primaries. McInsane and Giulani are DOA.

I think the number is between 30 to 50 million illegals. The census in 2000 estimated 8 or 9 million....a very low estimate in my opinion. They are coming in at about 5 million a year....so we probably gotten 25 million since 2000
We don't even know how many millions have overstayed their visas.
There are probably 10 million in Texas and maybe more that that in California, alone.

But I've got news for Republicans, there's never going to be another Ronald Reagan.
In a sad way, as far as Reagan's illegal immigration policies went - that would be a good thing.
Thanks for you post on Allen. I will be looking more closely at what he says in considering him for a presidential candidate. From now on (after campaigning and voting for Bush twice), I am going to be a lot more careful to only support candidates that support my major issues. Illegal immigration is #1 right now and I'm sick of having only wimps to chose from. I hope Allen (or someone else with the courage) is able to rally the party behind some real conservative values for a change.

He is in favor of a virtual border. *snort*
Show me a "virtual fence" and I'll show you a fence 1000 Mexicans a nite could run through.
Only a politicians aide could think up such a silly...surely poll tested.... wording.

Allen doesn't want to wait 5 or 6 years until the wall is built.
What we need to do is put the military on the damn border while building the wall or fence.

McCain or Guliani, who, IMO, are the only two who would definitely beat any Democrat they ran against. Rudy, yes. McCain, don't think so. McCain is media's creation and the same media can destroy him quite easily.

I think the number is between 30 to 50 million illegals. If thats accurate, that would mean that 1 in every 10 to 1 in every 6 people in this country is here illegally.
My guess is still over 20 million, but I wouldn't be surpirsed if its 30 million.
If its 50 million, then I would be stunned, since that means 1 in 6, and living in NYC, I would want to know where the hell they were hiding.
Give it a few years though, it will probably exceed 50 million.

If the population is 350 million, then your percentages would be lower. There has been a discerned effort by the media to understate the problem for obvious reasons.
Should the Democrats gain control of the house and senate, then nothing else matters to the main stream media....they will have accomplished their mission.
The fate of the US is secondary.

" he has to show a little fire in the belly. No one will ever call him overwrought."
Most of what he says about the Aliens is smoke but he needs to get his opponents to take a stand. Right now, not much concrete is being said. His Last election, SEN Allen talked big time about 2nd Amendment issues and right after the election he was on the front pages hand in hand with Brady, Sen Warner and other the "Assault Weapons" bill supporters.
