Authorities hunted Friday for a black bear that picked up a 2-year-old boy in its mouth and mauled his mother, critically injuring them before killing the child's 6-year-old sister.
Witnesses told authorities the bear picked up the boy in its mouth while the mother and other visitors tried to fend it off with sticks and rocks, said Dan Hicks, a spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
When the bear attacked, the girl ran away, authorities said. Rescuers found the girl's body about 100 yards down the trail from the falls.
A bear was standing over her.
"Allegedly, after the rescue squad found the little girl, one of the squad members fired a shot from a small caliber handgun," Hicks said Friday.
"We don't know whether the bear was hit or not. There was no blood, but it chased it off."
In May 2000, a woman was killed by a black bear near Gatlinburg.
Glena Ann Bradley, a schoolteacher from Cosby, was attacked by two female bears when she took a walk on a trail near a Smoky Mountains campground.

No firearms are allowed in the National Parks. Generally speaking National Forest and Preserves have hunting in season.
Awwrighty..I will post MY bear picture too later this evening.
Stay tuned..
~tuned~ :~D
I took this with a 300mm lens, blew it up and cropped it.
I have been closer (way too close) and prefer it at this distance.
A great shot :~D
I wish I hadn't been too gobsmacked to realize I was holding a dang camera :~D
I've saved that picture of my black smudge just out of sheer stubborness to admit I failed!
That's good to hear.
People shouldn't wander around in bear country without someone with a large-caliber weapon to watch their back.
We humans are not necessarily at the top of the food chain.

Predatory Black Bear Attack
She was a 5-foot-3, 105-pound hiker, out for a Sunday walk.
He was a 400-pound hulking young bruin officials described as "predatory," looking for a meal.
She said he came up behind her on a trail in Wawayanda State Park in Sussex County, chased her down and tackled her.
She said she did the only thing she could. She threw a hard elbow at his snout, and caught him flush, stunning the bear and giving her time to escape.
"This bear was in predatory mode," said Jack Kaskey, a state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman.
"This was classic predatory behavior. The bear was out to eat her. She had to fight for her life."

At least we do not have wolves like at Yellowstone.
Bear Mauls and Kills Infant in New York State
A bear killed an infant Monday afternoon as it tried to drag the girl into the woods, officials said.
The baby, Ester Schwimmer of Brooklyn, was snatched out of her stroller by the bear at the bungalow colony, police said.
Fallsburg is about 70 miles northwest of New York City.
Isaac Abraham, a community leader from Williamsburg in Brooklyn, said witnesses told him the 5-month-old girl was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital upon arrival.
The baby was in a stroller in front of the porch with members of her family, said Mike Fraser, a state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman.
The bear grabbed the stroller and the child, Fraser said. The child was knocked out of the stroller and the bear tried to drag her into the woods, Fraser said.

Hunting seasons are good for many reasons.
Now when in Alaska I prefer a short 12 ga with 00 buck and a 44 magnum. I have had more than one Griz closer than I would like. Saw a guy shoot one in the paw with the 12 ga and it gave us time to get away.
A wolf was killed on I-70 near Idaho Springs ? last year by a car. The wolf had a collar from Montana ?
Also wolves are coming from Wyoming into the Craig....Meeker area now. There are recent pictures.
Plus the activists have likely released wolves and/or wolf hybrids already.
They should evolve into animal husbandry. They would totally score with some delicious cow.
If I were a bear, I'd raise cattle.
