Director posits proof of biblical Exodus
The Globe and Mail ^ | 14 April 2006 | Michael Posner

A provocative $4-million documentary by Toronto filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici claims to have found archeological evidence verifying the story of the biblical Exodus from Egypt, 3,500 years ago.

Religious Jews consider the biblical account incontrovertible — the foundation story of the creation of the nation of Israel. Indeed, they celebrated the Exodus Wednesday night and last night with the annual Passover recitation of the Haggadah.

But among scholars, the question of if and when Moses led an estimated two million Israelite slaves out of pharaonic Egypt, miraculously crossed the Red Sea ahead of the pursuing Egyptian army and received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, has long been a source of contention.

Absent definitive proof, archeologists have argued variously that the biblical account is simply a nice fable or that it may have happened, but not on the scale suggested by the Book of Exodus. Nor is there any consensus about when it might have occurred.

Now, in Exodus Decoded, Mr. Jacobovici says he has found almost a dozen overlooked relics that confirm the biblical story.

I don't understand how a volcanic eruption could kill the first born of the Egyptians. The Nile turning red - yes, the frogs, locusts etc. - yes, but the first born of the Egyptians dying? ........... the death of the first born was caused by the grain being harvested and stored when wet, and covered in locust droppings. The grain storage pits were then covered with sand which made them hot and humid, ideal for growing bacteria.

The identity of this bacteria was found when DR Edwardo Montagnia of the Atlanta Center for Disease Control was called in by Cleveland doctors to find out why children were dying. This cause was identified as "Stachybotrys atra", a black water loving mould that grows on cellulose and produces mycotoxins on it's spores, which causes heamoraging of the lungs.

This was the perfect agent to be the cause of the 10th plague, but was only effective in killing the first born due to a combination of cultural factors. Firstly, it only effected the top part of the grain store, and the important people got first servings. Then, Egyptian first born were given an extra helping of the best food, as culturally they were thought of as the most important thing that the family possessed. This resulted in only the first born Egyptians being given a lethal dose of the toxins.

At the same time, the israelites were using different practices for food preparation that didn't concentrate the infected grain into lethal doses. This resulted in no deaths among them.

There happens to be a Red Sea, but there isn't any Reed Sea; also, it makes no sense that two words alike in the "into" language would be confused -- there's nothing to recommend the idea, IOW.

The Hebrew says yam suf, literally "Sea of Reeds," although the word yam (sea) is used in the Bible not only for oceans, but also for lakes (e.g., the "Sea" of Galilee).

"However, the most interesting detail not generally known is that the Jews entered and exited the Yam Suf on the same side! The Talmud says that the parting of the waters happened in a semi-circle! (Let's see Universal Studios do that!) The Bnai Yisroel entered on the western shore of the Yam Suf and exited on the same western shore!"

Yada’ is Hebrew for: “to know in relational sense.” Yahweh, or more correctly, Yahuweh, is God’s name. His personal and proper name means “I Am,” and “I Exist.” Therefore, Yada Yahweh is an invitation “to know Yahweh” and “to understand our existence.”

There was a remarkable book written about this a decade ago called "The Gold of Exodus". The amateur archeologists claim to have found Mt. Sinai on the Arabian Peninsula, as well as secret Saudi missile facilities. Check Amazon for the book.

Ha.... Although there may have been an Exodus, it was such a minor event it was not mentioned in Egyptian history. The Exodus probably involved a handful of people that crossed the marshes. It took them decades to multiply to the point they could attack and secure a significant piece of realestate.

You forget that the egpytians even attempted to delete their own pharao's, when they didn't like them anymore, out of the history acocunts. Do you think they would have made a whole informative show of how a bunch of slaves escaped their mighty empire? Besides, there is an account of a pharao who drowned in a 'whirl' while chasing 'the perpetrators' whith a group of chariots. Coincidentally, the place that was mentioned this took place was the same place as the Tora mentions as the crossing of the Red Sea! Also the shallowest bit of the Red Sea, may i add. Ofcourse maybe egyptian Pharaos regularly drowned in the same location of the Red Sea during a chariot chase? Who knows!

The sea of reeds is a proffered notion by those who want a naturalistic (read dismissive) explanation to supplant the supernatural.. The crossing was at the red sea and markers were set at the crossing point by Solomon, one of which still stands today. The one on the Saudi side was removed...

The exact location of piles of chariot-wheels and human remains happens to be the location of a submerged landbridge.

Ofcourse the event could have been totally natural, but interesting that the Hebrew people happen to be in the right place for the submerged landbridge to appear, that it appeared at the right time to allow the Hebrew people to cross, that it stayed unflooded long enough to allow the Hebrew people to cross, and then reflooded just in time to kill the egyptian chariotteers but not the Hebrews!

Sure was a suspiciously handy un/re-flooding.

Thanks for the ping! The article says the film was recently sold to the History Channel in the United States. We'll have to be watching for it.

Two scholars who have seen it are more positive. Barry Wilson, a professor of religion at York University, calls it "a fabulous detective story ... Perry Mason goes biblical. It's a remarkably well-executed study."

"Attempting to explain how natural phenomenon could lead to the plagues or the crossing of the Red Sea ultimately just undercuts our faith."

Only if your faith is weak.

The world was apalled and incensed when the Taliban blew up statues of Buddha that were hundreds of years old. Yet the world ignores this wanton destruction of the Temple Mount.

I agree, it doesn't make sense. Not only that, if God did use a volcano, then it must have been at least two explosions. Because too much time passed from the first plague to the alleged Tsunami for the sea crossing.

And if it was just a lake then a Tsunami doesn't make much sense either.

Reed Sea not Red Sea?

I was taught that at a university 25 years ago that it was a bad interpretation. But I read somewhere recently that King James and crew did get it right. That it wasn't a bad interpretation after all.
