Poll: Dislike Of Bush Could Hurt GOP (CBS News: Dems who hate Bush probably won't vote Republican)
CBS News ^ | April 10, 2006

Posted on 04/11/2006 8:36:23 AM PDT by presidio9

Continued dissatisfaction with President Bush and the Iraq war could spell trouble for Republicans in the fall congressional elections.

More than one-third of voters in a CBS News poll say they will think of their vote as a vote against Mr. Bush, while just 14 percent will think of it as a vote for him. Forty-five percent say their view of the president will not be a factor in how they vote.

Those numbers contrast sharply with the run-up to the 2002 midterm elections, in which Republicans won historic gains. Four years ago, 31 percent said their vote would be made in support of the president, versus just 19 percent who thought of their vote as a statement against him.

This year, as Democrats seek to wrest control of both the House and the Senate from the GOP, an endorsement from the president could actually do more harm than good for a candidate. Only 10 percent of voters say they'd be more likely to support a candidate backed by the president, while three times as many, 31 percent, would be less likely to support one.

IF BUSH BACKED A CANDIDATE, WOULD YOU BE… (Among registered voters)

More likely to vote for candidate 10%

Less likely to vote for candidate 31%

Wouldn’t make a difference 57%

Overall, ratings for Congress remain low. Just 27 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, compared with 66 percent who disapprove. Two-thirds of Americans say this Congress is accomplishing less than the typical Congress.

While the midterm elections are still seven months away, the CBS poll finds registered voters today would back a generic Democratic candidate for the House over a generic Republican by a 10-point margin.

2006 HOUSE VOTE (Among registered voters)

Democrat 44%

Republican 34%

It depends/Don’t know 21%

Slightly more Americans have a favorable view of the Democratic Party than an unfavorable one. A majority, 53 percent, has a negative view of the Republican Party.

In the wake of the controversy surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Republicans in Congress are also seen as more corrupt than Democrats, by a 32-13 percent margin.

As for the president, his overall job approval rating has risen a bit in the past few weeks to 37 percent, up from 34 percent in March. But 56 percent still disapprove of the job he's doing.

Mr. Bush's ratings on handling the war in Iraq, the campaign against terrorism and the economy are also up very slightly.

Just 26 percent — including just 42 percent of Republicans — approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the hot-button issue of immigration, while 53 percent disapprove.

Americans continue to have a bleak assessment of the situation in Iraq. A growing number, 78 percent, says Iraq is now in a state of civil war, and another 9 percent says civil war is likely to occur in the near future.

"In spite of them being major whimps and weaklings, the Pubbies will gain both senate and house seats this November. End of story!!!"

You're whistling past the graveyard.

What you are seeing all over America, right now, in these immigrant protests, is the systematic organization of 20 million illegal aliens to vote for the Democratic Party in 2006. They will vote in corrupt Democrat boroughs, there are a few in every state, and the Senate may very well go to the Democrats. Oh, and the Democrats WILL use the nuclear option, on everything, when they have a one vote majority. Count on it. They've seen the open tomb. They're not taking any chances again.

Likewise, these 20 million illegals being organized to vote will snatch house seats away from the GOP.

The Republican Party stands for business. Business wants open borders and cheap labor that doesn't have recourse to courts or to unions. The GOP won't close the borders. That's going to discourage a lot of Republicans. There won't be anything like the pollwatcher volunteers this time as in the past, which will make the tidal wave of systematically organized illegal voting hit like a tidal wave. The illegals are being organized right now by the Dems, and they vote in unprecedented numbers THIS TIME, because the immigration debate is about them. They will protect their interests by voting. IF 10% of them vote, 2 million votes will throw the Congress, both houses, to the Democrats, who will then accept Bush's idea of an amnesty (remember, business loves illegals), and cement the Democratic majority for another 50 years.

You think that Republicans are going to PICK UP seats, given that many right wing voters are utterly discouraged AND 20 million illegals are being organized to vote by the Democrats, right now: that's what these parades are.

Election 2006 is going to hit like a hurricane.
The Republicans will lose both houses of Congress, and Bush will be impeached next year.

I think most of the illegals like in districts that are already solid RAT. You do have a good point that the RATS have been known to vote dead people, felons and illegals in large numbers.

The Motor-Voter law also facilitated the registering of voters that are not citizens.

There is an element in the GOP that wants cheap labor. Senator Chambless of Georgia had caved into favoring the Senate compromise because Georgia farmers want it for economic reasons.

"I think most of the illegals like in districts that are already solid RAT. You do have a good point that the RATS have been known to vote dead people, felons and illegals in large numbers.
The Motor-Voter law also facilitated the registering of voters that are not citizens."

And the difference between THIS year and every past election, besides 1.5 million new illegals every year since the last election to add to the numbers, is that immigration is at the center of the political agenda.
This is the immigrants' lives themselves on the line.
Illegals will vote in unprecedented numbers, all over the country, because they are now politically aware of this issue, and the Democrats are organizing them to vote.

Senatorial elections are statewide, so it only takes one or two rotten urban boroughs to pump up the illegal votes to the point of delivering wins to the Democrat.

In the best of times, the vote is depressed in off years, but the Republicans are especially depressed this year, because the conservatives' agenda has gone down in flames.

So, a combination of systematic organization of illegal immigrant voters like never before (coupled with the fact that every year there are literally 1.5 million more illegals in the country than there ever were before), and demoralization of the Republican base does not point to a close election.
It points to a catastrophic blowout.

Both houses of Congress are likely to go to the Dems, as the illegals turn off their cloaking device and vote.

And then the full, hard lesson of 8 years in the wilderness starts to hit home: Bush will be impeached, though not convicted and removed.
Senate Democrats will focus on the impeachment and on getting Mrs. Clinton into office.

Once she's there, with a Democratic Congress, the Senate DEMOCRATS will exercise the nuclear option and end the filibuster the FIRST TIME that the Republicans try to block any major policy initiative (like amnesty for illegals). The Democrats saw the power of this. And they know that if they get the apparatus of power, then THEY control the electronic voting machines that don't have the paper trail.

Nothing can stop this catastrophe from happening to the GOP. But Americans could organize a fresh party that wants the border closed and is not beholden to business.

Could be but my fear is that many ,many frustrated Pubs will simply stay at home and not vote allowing Dems to win by default. That could really hurt even if in the Blue states there will be chances of pickups.

First of all, the real battle lines for the 2006 campaign are not yet drawn. Second no illegal is going to vote this year because they can't. You have been ingesting the "Kool-Aid" the Democrat scum and MSM have been feeding you. The bottom line on immigration is going to be, close the borders effectively, come up with a "guest worker" program that registers all guest workers that are here and those that will follow, and never grant citizen rights to any illegal that is within the twelve million that are here now. Future guest workers that register and work here for ten years should be able to become citizens after a period of time and education. As for 2006, the issue will be security and safety of the country and its citizens. Now, you can sit home and bitch with other Pubbies, but if you do, you will be signing your own death warrant if the Democrat vermin get control of the senate and house. All you have to do is look at the track record of the Democrat scum while in power, and you will see no defense of America and the destruction of our intelligence gathering capabilities. The Bill and Hillary Clintons of this world make Osama Bin Laden and his ilk very happy campers!!! Conservatives sitting on their hands are sealing their own doom. Wake up!!!

The Dems understand, well, that this is the key to their return to power.

The Republican Party loves the cheap labor and won't stop it.

Actually, I think the Republicans love the money, and don't care about the labor. But the outfits that profit from paying criminal aliens what amount to slave wages give generously, and the Administration and the Republicans in Congress are corrupted by unchecked power.

I've voted for the Republican in damn near every election since I became eligible. I've given generously to candidates and to the committees -- in the past. I've volunteered.

This year, that junk mail goes in a trash bin I placed next to the mail slot for that very purpose, and they won't be seeing a dime from me, no matter how many autopen pictures of Bush and Cheney or Bush or Cheney or Vicente Fox or whomever they send.

The Administration is right on the war, but so wrong on amnesty that they are undoing any good they did. The politicians of both parties are out for themselves, and bedamned to the country and the rest of us, Bush and Frist no less than Kerry and Kennedy.

If voting makes no difference, why vote? Unless there are ballot questions this year, I can't see myself bothering.

Bush was my man in 2004. Quisling was the fastest-rising, most promising officer in the Norwegian Army once, too.

Don't discount the effect of us refuseniks on 2006 and possibly 2008. Heck, in 2002 George HW Bush's betrayal on taxes gave us Clinton, thanks to protest votes and stay-at-homes. In 2006 George W's betrayal on borders is setting us up for Clinton, revisited. But is she really any worse than, say, McCain? Frist? Allen? If you trust any of those guys as far as you can throw him, you have a perceptual disorder.

We may only be safe with Presidency and Congress in opposite parties.

"Second no illegal is going to vote this year because they can't."

Hahahahahaha. Good one.
Are you for real?

"The bottom line on immigration is going to be, close the borders effectively, come up with a 'guest worker' program that registers all guest workers that are here and those that will follow, and never grant citizen rights to any illegal that is within the twelve million that are here now."

That's YOUR bottom line.
And which party, pray tell, is going to give you that?
Not the Democrats.
The Republican Party will give you all the guest workers you like, but they will NEVER close the borders. Open borders favor business interests immensely, and they are not going to go against capital. Ever.
You have a dream policy...that won't be enacted by the Republicans. They will propose it, to keep you happy, but it will keep dying, as they know it will. They're not going to pull out the stops to stop it, and they CERTAINLY are not going to enforce the current laws. That would hurt big business. And big business is their ultimate patron. We can watch the whole cycle of rope-a-dope over and over again. I assume we will. Well...until the Democrats harness the illegal vote and win control of government. Then there won't even be any pretext of trying to give you what you want. The border is open because Democrats and the top of the Republican Party, the business class, WANT IT that way. It's not going to change through the Republicans. Those few mavericks calling for other laws are going to accomplish nothing.

"As for 2006, the issue will be security and safety of the country and its citizens."

For you.
The illegals voting will be voting about immigration.

"Now, you can sit home and bitch with other Pubbies, but if you do, you will be signing your own death warrant if the Democrat vermin get control of the senate and house."

My DEATH warrant?
Not hardly. No matter who controls the government my own personal life will be very little affected.

"All you have to do is look at the track record of the Democrat scum while in power, and you will see no defense of America and the destruction of our intelligence gathering capabilities."

I did well under Reagan.
I did well under Bush 41.
I did well under Clinton.
I am doing well under Bush 43.
I don't expect that to change materially no matter who wins or doesn't win.

"Conservatives sitting on their hands are sealing their own doom. Wake up!!!"

Doom?
DOOM?
What is going to happen?
Are the Mexicans going to kill us?
I'm not in the bottom half of the economy. Even if immigration continues unabated forever, immigrants and overseas folks are not going to be able to affect my particular niche. There is no pressure on ME whether the border's open or shut. Hispanics and I share the same religion, and I speak their language more or less. I don't find them in the slightest bit threatening or alarming. For one thing, I'm French. I don't care if America is an English-speaking Protestant country or a Spanish-speaking Catholic country so long as the reasonable rule of law is preserved, and I don't see any reason to think that it won't be.

I am not going to DIE if Hillary Clinton and the Democrats sweep power and hold it for 50 years. I am not DOOMED no matter what happens. Maybe YOU are, and so you are so much more agitated about it. But I'm not.

When I look out, there are only a few issues I really care about deeply. They have to do with the sanctity of life. I don't like abortion. I don't like the death penalty. I don't like euthansia and assisted suicide. I don't like undeclared war. As far as I can tell, a more Hispanic, Catholic America, if anything, is more likely to favor my viewpoints on these things than the current state of affairs. I most assuredly am NOT doomed, therefore, even if the whole place becomes Mexico Norte.

Here on FreeRepublic, there are a lot of folks who really care VERY PASSIONATELY about this border issue. Many of them feel the pressure of Mexican labor. Others don't like the lawlessness. When I look, very objectively, at the circumstances, I see that neither political party is going to close that border. The GOP never will. They are ultimately the party of big business. Big business likes illegal labor. It's profitable. They like products made by Chinese slave labor: that's profitable too.

Now you're fairly screaming at people to "Wake UP!" and vote for your party. Back at ya, fellah. YOU will be in much greater psychological anguish than I will be under Hillary Clinton. So if YOU don't want her there, then YOU need to start doing all this screaming at the GOP leaders, like Bush, and tell him to Shut The Hell Up about amnesty, etc. He's the one who is taking you off a cliff, not me.

I'm just diagnosing the illness and telling you where the danger lies for you. You're getting mad because I'm telling you that I will let you go right over the waterfall with your idiot leaders rather than vote for them if they don't do what I want.
But I will.
Team Bush has only two problems: foreign policy and domestic policy.
They keep getting it wrong.
They keep making me mad.

I am not REALLY worked up about immigration the way others are, but I do see, clearly, that THIS is the issue that gives the Democrats power, because demographics are votes.

The fact that you're in denial about ILLEGALS VOTING in corrupt district tells me that you're just not quite there. You're living with fantasy contructs of the way things ought to be, as opposed to the way that they are.

So, you told me to "Wake Up!"
Now I'll tell YOU to wake up: throw Bush off the train if he won't close the borders. Throw the Republicans under the truck if they won't reverse Kelo. Push the Republicans off the cliff if they won't stop spending like drunken sailors.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
You are very loyal to your party.
I am very loyal to my own belief system. If the Republicans give me what I want, I vote for them. If they don't - and right now they're not - I throw them under the bus. Simple as that.
You want loyalty I'm not going to give.
So, wake up and give me and my ilk what we want, and maybe you'll live.

I saw a poll that claimed 59% liked their own representative which will be the only poll that matters in '06. The MSM keeps claiming that there are 32 seats in the House too close to call (22 currently held by Republicans) and 12 in the Senate (8 held by Republicans). If the numbers are what the MSM claim then the most seats the Rats can pick up in the House is 9 seats and 3 in the Senate.
The party affiliation that the MSM keep sampling are from mid 90's when the Rats had a 10-12% lean over Republicans but today the lean is more like 1-2% with an Independent lean of maybe tops 5% and not the 12-25% they claim.
The MSM can simplify these polls by ignoring the party affiliations and strictly go with actual voters from the '04 election and see if their overall opinions have changed from positive to negative feelings or vice-versa. These numbers are nothing but the MSM keeping the negativity in American's minds. As long as the MSM keeps with the negativity then no matter how good Iraq, Economy or anything else goes it's all negative for the people.

We don't need a poll, good or bad, to tell us what's in front of our noses: The GOP is in trouble, and will lose the House if it doesn't shape up.

In Sept. 04 WP/ABC poll showed Bush with an approval rating of 47% with a sample of 40% Democrats, 37% Republicans and 23% Independents. Now they have him at 38% with a 12% Rat to Republican separation and less "Independents". People may change their likes and dislikes with personalities but they don't change parties like that. I believe that less people think the GOP is in real trouble than the MSM will have one believe and they use skewed polls to demonstrate their claim. If they would go to real sampling like peoples real affiliations which most studies show Democrats outnumbering Republicans by only 1-2% then the numbers would be more indicative to the truth.

We could quibble about how much trouble the GOP is in, but things aren't looking good, and polls are only part of it.
That can change, but I'm afraid we'll need to make it change.

Polls don't ask illegal aliens.

5-10% of illegal aliens will register and vote this year in rotten boroughs where the Democrats let them.

They will do so because immigration reform is alarming them right now, and the Dems are organizing them.

The illegal vote is going to hit like a hurricane.

These Senate seats will be lost to it: Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, DeWine in Ohio and Talent in Missouri, at a minimum.
