The demonstrations are the best advertisements possible for the idea that America must get tough on illegal immigrants and tighten its immigration policies.

You got that right, JP.

There is something to what he says. Just listening to talk radio over the past few days I've heard several conservatives and even several DEMOCRATS call in and say that they are not happy about George Bush and the Republican Party...BUT they WILL vote for a GOP candidate that is pro-border security. This is starting to rile our base...and the more "in-your-face" the media is about glorifying illegals...the greater the backlash from the conservative base.

Seeing thousands of illegals marching in our streets only informs us of just how bad this problem is. It reaffirms that something has to be done, or they wont be our streets anymore.

Instead, the immigration interest groups and others seem intent on radicalizing the debate, in making it clear to many people who aren't yet committed to one side or the other on this issue that the pro-immigrant side is nuts and the anti-immigrant side is more sensible.

It isn't a matter of being pro- or anti- immigrant. It's a matter of being anti-illegals. Even Podhoretz slouches into this imprecise language that smears the fundamental point.

If they want to march under the Mexican flag, then we should enforce the rules represented by that flag.

From the constitution of Mexico:

1)Article 33: Foreigners may not participate in the political affairs of the country.

2) Article 32: Mexicans shall have priority over foreigners under equality of circumstances for all classes of concessions and for all employment, positions or commissions of the government in which the status of citizenship is not indispensable.

The sight of 20,000 people marching in downtown red state America carrying a foreign flag is not going to win a political debate. It is going to incite violence I'm afraid.

If they're designed to help the Democratic Party in its pursuit of majority status in the House and Senate in November 2006, then their organizers are profoundly stupid.............

The rallies, the thousands of american flags .. then topped off with speakers like Ted Kennedy and Hellary Clinton was sooooooooooooooooooooo planned for a PR stunt

I wonder .. who exactly funded those rallies

people you have to understand.

Our politicians aren't going to do anything but pander to the illegals. A politician with a spine cannot lead the spinless. When Americans grow a spine, and demand the elected do what is necessary, then something will be done. Until then, nothing will happen, except a pushing and shoving match to press this nation into granting citizenship and our tax dollars to the illegals. Come see me in ten years after the current illegal wave is legal, and there are 40 million more illegals demonstrating in the streets. We are losing the WOT people, because we refuse to make ourselves and our politicians grow a spine.

I tried watching some of the speeches in D.C. on CSpan yesterday. Only problem was, most of them were speaking Spanish.

It's a shame too, if they wanted to influence our government. I am a born, registered to vote, American. I might have been moved and contacted my elected officials to work on their behalf if I had of known what they were saying :)

However, the ones there that could understand what was being said are not legal citizens and can't vote: supposedly.

I didn't see a whole lot of effort at assimilation, so I'm not too keen to support them :)

I know this is wishful thinking but, maybe this 2 week vacation will allow time for the voters to pound their representatives on this issue. If not, We'll know we're in an up-hill battle. This mob mentality can not rule the day!

'...these demonstrations were and are a horrible mistake.'

I don't think immigrant legality will make any difference to the Reps or Dems. Political gain is the only motive. It seems like we have a govt of no consequence. They, congress, will do what they want when they want to.

There is no chance on earth that Congress is going to adopt a wildly liberal set of policies on illegal immigration.

I predict Congress will do what it always does. Each individual will act in his/her own personal interest. Most likely this means they will do nothing until after the November elections and blame others for the inaction. If public pressure becomes too intense, they will pass something, but it will not be enforced. Meanwhile more thousands of illegals will pour across the border.

Americans are a law-abiding people, and they don't go for that sort of thing.

Americans don't care. As long as we can Tivo American Idol, let the illegals do their illegal things and glory in it by the hundreds of thousands. I've given up hope for the country; I have hope in my family and in God, but this country is bent on self destruction.

I like his hopeful point-of-view, but I don't understand. To me, if the Democrats register all these illegals - and there seems to be nothing to be done re checking immigration status at the polls -- then they will flood the vote. If the Democrats pander to them, it doesn't matter how logical they are not, they will get the votes. If we hate seeing these demonstrations, so what? And why does he think Congress WON'T pass some bend-over bill to grant them all Amnesty? (Note to self: Must listen to Rush and Laura Ingraham this morning. They are so positive.)
