"Modern humans were obsessed with this. They were spending a lot of time and energy on how they looked. They cared more about how they looked and were more style conscious." We're decended from Stone Age metrosexuals? Nooooooooo!

I thought that Neanderthals died off because violent homo sapiens killed them all off.

We've known for some time that neanderthals were more intelligent and more refined than the average democrat.

I can't wait to see the reality show of this.
So if they were just as smart but uglier, how do we know they weren't just clans of genetically deformed and ostracized Homo sapiens, now eliminated from our gene pool?

This meant that if an area became hunted out or a more powerful rival took over, the Neanderthals had no-one to turn to while the modern humans did. I think more likely is that if some neanderthal invented something cool like a crossbow, the technology would not spread. Wheras with humans, if one person knew, they soon would all know.
Further, most invention are the result of previous inventions. If you don't talk to each other, technology slows to a standstill.

Interesting item. No matter what the reason(s) for Neanderthal's extinction, it may be noteworthy to add that they were around longer than we have been around to date. :)
To: blam
"Neanderthals Were Not Stupid, Just A Bit Anti-Social" I don't want to oversimplify this, but I'm pretty much convinced that this whole problem of Neanderthal extinction was caused by out of control body odor. After all, who in their right mind would sleep with a Neanderthal who smelled like a goat and had "livestock?"

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Seems like genetic mixing might also play a role. Human gatherings would have allowed for a broader selection of mates, some years before the internet. ;->
