Tremendous Surge in UK Crime Rate; Gov. Gives up, Discourages Victims from Resisting

The Public Policy Three Strikes and You're ... in Like Flint By Hal G.P. Colebatch Published 4/10/2006 12:06:30 AM American and British criminologists have long been puzzled and angered by the fact that Britain seems to have learnt nothing from the experience of New York in successfully reducing crime. The big drop in virtually all types of crime in New York has generally been attributed to the zero-tolerance policy associated with Mayor Guiliani. Now Britain, far from adopting zero-tolerance, looks like it's adopting a policy of not prosecuting many serious crimes at all. This is the subject of an official Home Office directive to all British police forces. British police have now been told that instead of arresting a range of serious criminals, they can be let off with a caution. The Home Office says offenses that may now be dealt with by a caution include burglary of a shop or office, threatening to kill, actual bodily harm, and possession of Class A drugs such as heroin or cocaine if police decide a caution would be the best approach. Other crimes including common assault, threatening behavior, sex with an underage girl or boy, and car theft should normally be dealt with by a caution, if the offenders admit their guilt but have no criminal record. London and British crime rates have been increasing for years. Recently total crime rates for London have been estimated at about seven times those of New York for a slightly smaller population and some authorities suggest these figures have been minimized. England and Wales are now accounted by some estimates as the most dangerous places for crime in the developed world.

Amazing - it seems one could become a career criminal and never have a record because he got nothing but cautions when caught....

The question the article doesn't answer is who is committing those crimes. Could it have something to do with immigration, legal and illegal? I bet it does.

But, but, they CAN'T have crime in England, they don't have or allow guns!!

The last time I was in England, the friends I was staying with were paranoid because there was so much theft. England is locked up really tight and they still steal. Even the stuff that's bolted down. They bring their own wrenches (or "spanners"), bolt cutters, crowbars, etc.

They prosecute the victim, not the perp if you defend yourself.

The most egregious example is the farmer the put in prison for shooting the burglars who had broken into his farm too many times to mention.

Europe is a mess. Life is backwards.

Sounds like it is a free for all for criminals.

And the restrictions on firearms were supposed to make Brits safer.

Liberals: take away a persons' ability to defend themselves and then tell the court system and police to not defend the same. Wonderful.

Get caught defending yourself with a gun and go to jail for a very long time.

A few more years of this and Britain will either cease to exist to turn to fascism. Happened in a couple of other european countries, as I recall.

The England of "Upstairs, Downstairs" has become the England of "A Clockwork Orange." Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange," first a book and then a film, seemed like outrageous fiction when it first appeared. Now it has become reality.

Gov. Gives up, Discourages Victims from Resisting

do any of you remember when NY Weather icon Tex Antoine, after a story on a rape, opened his weather report with something like ".....if rape is inevitable, just lay back and try to enjoy it"....to which he was quickly and unceremoniously fired

looks like our friends across the pond need to rethink this whole anti-gun thing that has been foisted upon their subjects. ( An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject)

Hmm, In United Kingdom, There use to be a principal.....One 's Home, is One's Castle.

In certain parts of the USA; Getting in the house is no problem, getting out is another problem altogether....or not a problem. (Fla.??? Eh. :^)

Fascism with an anti-Muslim bias might not be the worst thing that could happen to the UK.
Hope they find something better, though.
