WASHINGTON - Putting aside party differences, Senate Republicans and Democrats coalesced Thursday around compromise legislation that holds out the hope of citizenship to an estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States unlawfully.
"We can no longer afford to delay reform," said Republican Sens. John McCain and Edward M. Kennedy in a statement that capped weeks of struggle to find common ground. [TRANSLATION: Amnesty and a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal aliens]

He has National security, taxes, partial birth abortion ban, giving the finger to the UN, patriot act, and soon to be ANWR drilling, amongst other things.
What about no childruun left behind. What liberal helped him with that one.
Yep, thanks for the correction: 39
They simply must oppose this bill. Our nation depends on it.
I'm done, too.
Or you could hold out for the really long shot that Bush is a true conservative and vetos the bill. But the odds would not be very good on that one would they.
Fantastic news, and we can probably thank Senator Sessions from Alabama for it, who is the Tancredo of the Senate.
The hispanic vote is what gets me.
What was the total hispanic vote in 2004? Around 6% of the total, split something like 60/40 Dems/GOP.
So to try to secure a larger piece of 6%, they're willing to throw 10% or more of the total vote they received from their base out the window.
Not very smart.
Frist isn't necessarily the baddest guy here. He pushed for as many changes as he could get, leading to the martinez substitute which is much better than the judiciary committee bill.
Then he got 20 or so amendments lined up, with enough that would pass to further make the bill almost but not quite reasonable.
He then refused to name the judiciary committee as the conference, so I presume the conference will be opposed to the bill and will be supportive of the house. So we could get even closer to what we want. (and probably almost all the way to what I want, since I opposed the felony parts of the house bill and they are the most likely parts to be dropped in the compromise).
And since he's not getting his amendments, he'll still support blocking the vote, and he'll introduce his bill which has only the parts of the current bill that every republican supports. The dems will vote against it, and probably block cloture, but they'll have to explain why they are completely for a bill which seals the border and gives amnesty, but completely AGAINST a bill which simply seals the border, leaving the amnesty for another day.
The republicans will easily explain this as being that the democrats oppose blocking the borders, and only went along in order to get amnesty. So they aren't REALLY for our security, they see security as a bargaining chip to gain what they want.
It may be a very clever ploy. And given that Frist had so many defections that the democrats had a majority, it would be a pretty good deal if he could pull it off.
What about his no illegal left behind?
Sessions was amazing tonight. One man. One voice. In a room full of traitorous, evil poseurs he stood alone.
What about his no illegal left behind?
Oh it's very smart. The numbers are there. Keep running them, and you'll see. The Republic is dying.
Everyone I know outside this forum is less conservative than me yet this is all folks talked about today and they are furious
much more so than with CFR or Harrietgate ....exponentially
hopefully we will awaken but we need coordination
the illegales have all of Spanish TV and radio to mobilize them
we need a day of national protest to the way Bush and the RINOS have handled this
tens of millions...a national strike ....something
How about his Supreme Court nominee good old Harriet and I think he just wants to make the UN more effective not get rid of it. How about good old fashioned spending tax money on domestic programs,he's really compasionate with our money there.
He hasn't got that past the Senate yet so he can sign it. Maybe then Fox will give him his "stuff" back.
In this, G. Bush has let us all down. He would have signed Amnesty by name.
This amnesty bill will be approved. It's over. The illegals won. I feel sorry for that Somali or Bangladeshi guy who has waited for 7 years while he sees Miguel just come on over and then gets a "path to documentation."
And Miguel just laughs since he knew this was coming.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Voting, writing, discussing with people I know -- that's my style. I'm done with that now. I don't do protests. As long as men like Sessions can hold the floor of the Senate, there's still hope. But after that, there's powder. Dry powder.
2006 will be of special interest to future historians studying the bloodless coup of the United States.
