Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

The liberals are already in control of Congress. Some of them have R's behind their names and some have D's, but make no mistake, the liberals are in control.

Amnesty and pardons a have a history in our country. Using it does not weaken other laws. Amnesty is the flip side of the justice coin, which is the mercy of the law. Illegals who are contributing to our economy, working menial labor and are law abiding may deserve amnesty. To want to deport all 20 million is unpractical and fanatical.

Indeed. If any form of amnesty for even one illegal is passed, I will go out that same day and change affiliation.

Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. You are wrong about employers being scared to death of hiring illegals. Here's how they "do" it. Legal Mexicans, or those with green cards are hired on in mosdest jobs, but make 100,000 a year. All of them have ten jillion relatives in Mexico who come here and are are not only put up, but hired by their relative and paid with cash under the table using most of the 100,000 They have destroyed our business since we can't compete with construction companies who get hundreds of employees at 5-7 dollars an hour. These companies don't have to pay workmen comp. or anything else. We're legal and our records are inspected, but if these people get in trouble, they just pop over the border 'till the heat's off. They then reenter with different names.

NO guest worker/amnesty!! Call your senators.

Forget the senate. They've already betrayed us and the proper answer to that is to withhold your vote from any senator, of any party, who votes for this amnesty.

Instead, email/call/contact your House reps so that the ranks of Congressman Tancredo's loyal-to-America opposition grow.

Also, don't forget to contribute to Free Republic and Tom Tancredo. If half of us who post here daily were to give the man $100, we could fund his '08 presidential campaign to the tune of a million dollars right now.

How would you deport every single illegal? You can't and you know it.

Here's a few modest suggestions. If any illegal violates any (other) law, he's deported. Up to and including traffic laws. And many illegals would "deport" themselves if we did a few things. For example: stop providing any welfare or other benefits, including "free" public education to illegals. Throw a few employers of illegals in jail. It's not brain surgery.

Amnesty is a pardon for committing a crime. Not a good way for a government to do business or do discourage future crime.

We don't need to deport all 20 million - with jobs and without social services, they would self-deport. They managed to get here, sneaking in through the desert in the dark of night. They can manage to get out.

I'm listening to Rush and seems he is having the same reaction I did. LOL

Hell, everyone knew D.C. was going to sell us amnesty, right? But to insult our intelligence at the same time? Their arrogance is beneath contempt.

I've said I'm not going to vote for a Republican on the slogan the Dems are worse. I maintain that stance. So far, the Republicans have given little reason for anyone to vote for them. And I don't vote against people, unless thy name is McCain. So, I have no reason to vote this fall. A fall in which base turnout determines outcome of mid-terms.

At this point I merely support Blackwell, Steele and Erlich. Except I can only do so monetarily s I don't reside in their states. Well, maybe Kyl just to hit back at McCain. ;-) I'm not voting for my Congressman, a Rep by the way, nor the RINO applicant for the Senate in '06.

Well done GOP.

Good luck this fall since you've screwed your base on judges, tax cuts so far, ANWR, imigration, free speech, supporting terrorists (McCain amendment)...etc.

Tell me friend, how would you deport 20 million people including little old ladies and children? How would you locate them?

A) Close the border (i.e. stop the bleeding).

B) Enforce the laws against hiring illegals. If necessary, make the fines a hundred times higher.

C) Cut off all public services to illegal aliens.

D) Deputize local LE to check immigration status for suspected illegal aliens.

E) Deport via train, plane or bus.

Rinse, repeat...
