LIVE THREAD: French Riots
April 4, 2006 | FR

Post your observations here.

Richard Miniter was on FNC and said that even if an employee is caught on videotape stealing from their employers, they cannot be fired.

Well, you'd think the Press would want to be in Lille, for the dustbin burning festival...

Protestors in Lille, northern France, Tuesday April 4, 2006 burn dustbins following a students' demonstration against the French government's new labor law. Police said at least 1 million people poured into the streets across France on Tuesday and youths clashed with riot officers in the latest protests against the government's new jobs law. "Even in rioting, the French are lazy."

So it's more or less petered out huh? Wonder if they're planning another round next Tuesday.

IOW, it's not true.

Actually, it was along the route from the Place de la Republique to the Place d'Italie, so 3rd, 4th, 5th, down to 13th. The city is not all aflame, this is in pretty avoidable areas. It is as if the post-Rodney King riots were extrapolated to mean the US was a no-go zone. That said, there are some very violent "casseurs" coming in from the suburban ghettos to capitalize on the chaos. They have nothing better to do because literally 50% of them are unemployed. The strict French labor laws essentially keep them on the dole, where idle hands are the devil's playground...

This has been a bizarro year. First you see deadly riots, the recall of ambassadors, and massive boycotts over cartoons in a rinky dink newspaper half a world away. Then you see scores of young folks rioting over the idea that an employer would actually have the right to pick who he chooses to employ. If I didn't know better i'd swear I was reading the Onion.

And I want to see at least some pics of this (from a fresh AFP article)...

In the south of the capital, dozens of trouble-makers hurled paving stones and bottles at riot police, who fired tear gas. At least nine police officers were slightly injured.

More serious incidents broke out in Lille, in the north, where hundreds of youths hurled missiles at the riot police, smashed shop windows and vandalised cars, although the situation was calmer by around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT).

A female television reporter was assaulted while filming the violence and a young man suffered burn injuries from the shell of a tear gas grenade.

Police in Rennes, in the northwest, also fired tear gas at protestors after they were targeted with bottles and stones as youths set garbage cans on fire and smashed bus shelters and windows.

Firefighters said they had evacuated at least three people, including one hit with a rubber bullet.

In the northern city of Caen, a photographer was injured in clashes between police and demonstrators who had set up a roadblock on the ring road.

I feel like I'm being left out of all the excitement.

I was in the 4th and 5th on foot this evening..nothing. Nothing as far as the could see from just east of the Notre-Dame to the south. It was much more isolated then anyone imagines.

Last week in Paris. Evil Muslim punks abusing stupid French protestors in broad daylight. Like wolves, they would just get a protestor separated from the herd and then move in swiftly for the attack.

It was only in the 4th and 5th during the protest march... it's certainly not in most areas, you're right. You might want to avoid the area around the Sorbonne, though... not far off the Latin Quarter. The CRS (the serious cops) are not in the mood to play games. :-) Enjoy your visit! Hope you took advantage of the sales last week!

That'll show those dustbins, a repressive symbol of something-or-other.
