Tattoos and piercings are ways for an individual to express their personality, but most employers are looking for presentable employees.
"I think that appearance is very important, [because] it lets the employer know that you know how to take care of yourself," said Eric Constantine, the manager of Athlete's House in Nashville.
It can be a very difficult choice whether or not to have your ears pierced or to get a tattoo, as Lisa Stevens, a freshman, found out.
"I really wanted the lifeguard job at the local pool back home," she said. "The only thing was that I also wanted a couple of tattoos that I could get, now that I was 18. I had to make the choice between the two because the pool wouldn't allow any visible tattoos. I second guess my decision a lot."
More and more people are getting tattoos than ever, and more and more of them are having to find ways to cover them up at work.
Tyler White, a Jackson, Tenn., freshman, was trying to find a summer job when a friend of his told him about an opening at a local car shop.
"I went in for the interview and everything seemed to go well, then the manager asked me about my tattoos," he said.
"I had to wear a long-sleeved jumpsuit all summer," White said.
It is important to realize that getting a tattoo is permanent and can hinder one from doing some of the things they might want to, like getting a job.
There are places that are appropriate to receive tattoos that are almost never visible.
Most employers say it would also be a good idea to stay away from too many piercings if one doesn't want to have to remove them every day before work.
Constantine said, "The employer pays a lot of attention to your appearance.
"It is important to look your best for [an] interview, even if that includes passing up getting a tattoo or an extra piercing," he said.
Overall, most people think it's okay to get that extra hole in one's ear or that barbed wire around a person's arm.
However, students are urged to know that career options might become limited because of many visible tattoos or piercings.
I think that's probably what many folks do on this topic, and others as well. Sometimes comments can be a knee-jerk reaction to someone's personal experiences. We've all been there done that. I'm not saying I'm right, but I'm not wrong either. teehee ;)
Why do you think they get that crap in the first place? They want to set themselves aside from everyone else. Effective isn't it?
These kids think they are expressing them selves. Nothing like a horseshoe shaped ring on someone's nose to say "underachiever" to me.
ROFL! Gosh, that just brought a long lost memory to mind. I seem to remember years and years ago, there were some plastic toys that were called, "cooties". I think people with tattoos used to throw them at unsuspecting people. ;)
You're probably right about that. And what a shame that would have been too, right? A delicious pie, gone to waste because someone had to have a pretty one. got it? ;)
Interviewee: "Yeah. This is how I express myself. This is the way I always dress. Is that a problem?"
Employer: "This is a bank. We interact with the public every day and we must project a positive and professional image. The way you're dressed doesn't meet our standards."
Interview: "That's awfully narrow-minded. I've known some real crooks who dress in suits every day. I think you need to judge me for what I am inside, man." [scratches crotch absent-mindedly]
Employer: "The interview is over, Mr. Smith. You can see yourself to the door."
Interviewee [loudly]: "You hateful, superficial bigot. I bet you call yourself a Christian, too."
When I say bias I'm talking about my (grown) kids. There are no good tattoos for them IMO. Now, if my husband wants one as long as it's not on his face, whatever. Same way with others. I don't pay much attention unless it is put somewhere to draw attention. Businesses have standards though. People just have to find the place they are most comfortable in. I recently took a trip to the west coast with my Dad. He stopped at a waffle house. That was an interesting bunch. There were 4 guys working the line. One looked like and talked like Elvis. Another had tattoos everywhere but his head. Another had the rings. The 4th Long haired one just stood there drinking coffee and seemed confused. His name was Newbie. The girl was "normal" They did cook a good breakfast though , even if I couldn't watch. The owner showed up too. A cowboy:') They all seemed happy and got along. Except for the girl. They gave her a hard time and were actually rude to her. She didn't fit in with the team I guess:') Maybe if she spiked and died her hair purple? Same way with a conservative business. Leave the studs and hoops at home and don't flaunt your tattoos or you may have trouble fitting in.
Incidently, that is Jackass's Steve-O," who is also in Guiness for largest tattooed likeness (of himself) on his back.
Whats wrong with not hiring smokers? Most non smokers do nto like to smell smoke on people they do business with. Also the health costs, and the lost labor time to smoke breaks, its not worth it. Discrimate against the piercings and tattoos also. If i see someone with a piercing they immediately go into the tragically moronic category and they dont get a job.
Call me sexist. Or prissy.
I'm in healthcare and I prefer to hire smokers.
BTW, I'm still waiting for the picture.
Usually I have my camera with me. THat day I didn't or I might have. At first I tried not to stare and then I made sure she knew I was staring.
Exactly what benefit would there be for you to hire a smoker? So you a prejudicial against non smokers? Is their breath too fresh? do they not cough enough? Come on you can disagree without saying you prefer to hire smokers. Thats like saying, i prefer to hire alcoholics.
First of all you can't ask health questions before you hire someone , so hiring a smoker is kind of a surprise bonus. Patients can not smoke in rooms or halls. I have NEVER had a smoker tell me they were too busy or didn't want to take an extra break to go outside and smoke when supervision needed:')
It was a J-O-K-E
