Tattoos, visible piercings could affect appearance-related job opportunities

Tattoos and piercings are ways for an individual to express their personality, but most employers are looking for presentable employees.

"I think that appearance is very important, [because] it lets the employer know that you know how to take care of yourself," said Eric Constantine, the manager of Athlete's House in Nashville.

It can be a very difficult choice whether or not to have your ears pierced or to get a tattoo, as Lisa Stevens, a freshman, found out.

"I really wanted the lifeguard job at the local pool back home," she said. "The only thing was that I also wanted a couple of tattoos that I could get, now that I was 18. I had to make the choice between the two because the pool wouldn't allow any visible tattoos. I second guess my decision a lot."

More and more people are getting tattoos than ever, and more and more of them are having to find ways to cover them up at work.

Tyler White, a Jackson, Tenn., freshman, was trying to find a summer job when a friend of his told him about an opening at a local car shop.

"I went in for the interview and everything seemed to go well, then the manager asked me about my tattoos," he said.

"I had to wear a long-sleeved jumpsuit all summer," White said.

It is important to realize that getting a tattoo is permanent and can hinder one from doing some of the things they might want to, like getting a job.

There are places that are appropriate to receive tattoos that are almost never visible.

Most employers say it would also be a good idea to stay away from too many piercings if one doesn't want to have to remove them every day before work.

Constantine said, "The employer pays a lot of attention to your appearance.

"It is important to look your best for [an] interview, even if that includes passing up getting a tattoo or an extra piercing," he said.

Overall, most people think it's okay to get that extra hole in one's ear or that barbed wire around a person's arm.

However, students are urged to know that career options might become limited because of many visible tattoos or piercings.

This is news? A Drudge siren? I don't think so. It is self-evident.

I guess I basically see three types of people, good folks, a$$holes, and folks I don't know well enough to tell yet.

YMMV

Her brother died in a tragic accident when he was 15. A couple of years later, she went to a tattoo parlor...

That's what gravestones are for.

Your daughter and her peers should be introduced to henna tattoos. It will give them the chance to test out a design for a while before making a permanent committment.

I cannot understand people who refuse to look beyond the surface

That is exactly the point.

People that put tatoos in prominent places are shouting their inner personality to the world.

I don't mind a little flower on the ankle, USMC on the shoulder or the like, but the barbed wire around the neck and such is over the top, IMHO.

The ones I detest are the diamond studs in the top of a nostril.

They look like the person (usually a girl) blew their nose and a wad of snot landed on the nose.

Gross

Why should smoking be excluded from "its his business and he has a right to hire whom he feels best fits his business?"

Maybe he owns a health food store?

Maybe he offers insurance as a benefit but can't afford the extra premium to insure a smoker

Should we have a affirmative action for smokers?

Smoking is a choice, just like deciding not to hire a smoker

You would deny the freedom of choice for the business person but agree with the freedom of choice for the smoker?

I'm missing something here. Most people get tats to show they're a rebel and a free spirit, yada yada...Then when someone judges them as being a rebel and free spirit, say the accounting firm where they've applied for a job, they get upset?

Howdy Chena! You sure 'fought' it out with them--like the Spartans at the pass!

Some there just won't look past superficial superficialities.

I can see being wary of gang tats, MS13, and all that stuff--the meaning is there to read. But any old tatoo? Nope.

I have to admit, that belly button baubles and pierced eyebrows make a pretty girl less attractive on the outside imo, but I'm not 'in the market' anyway--and they are wearing all that to please them, not me.

Besides, I am always in jeans and biker boots (good practical wear for what I do and where I live) and with the long hair have probably scared my share of people at first glance, too, especially in riding leathers. (8^D)

If they are that superficial and judgemental, it is probably just as well, and their loss!

You did great! and as for those who didn't/wouldn't get it, we can always pray for them.
