Tattoos and piercings are ways for an individual to express their personality, but most employers are looking for presentable employees.
"I think that appearance is very important, [because] it lets the employer know that you know how to take care of yourself," said Eric Constantine, the manager of Athlete's House in Nashville.
It can be a very difficult choice whether or not to have your ears pierced or to get a tattoo, as Lisa Stevens, a freshman, found out.
"I really wanted the lifeguard job at the local pool back home," she said. "The only thing was that I also wanted a couple of tattoos that I could get, now that I was 18. I had to make the choice between the two because the pool wouldn't allow any visible tattoos. I second guess my decision a lot."
More and more people are getting tattoos than ever, and more and more of them are having to find ways to cover them up at work.
Tyler White, a Jackson, Tenn., freshman, was trying to find a summer job when a friend of his told him about an opening at a local car shop.
"I went in for the interview and everything seemed to go well, then the manager asked me about my tattoos," he said.
"I had to wear a long-sleeved jumpsuit all summer," White said.
It is important to realize that getting a tattoo is permanent and can hinder one from doing some of the things they might want to, like getting a job.
There are places that are appropriate to receive tattoos that are almost never visible.
Most employers say it would also be a good idea to stay away from too many piercings if one doesn't want to have to remove them every day before work.
Constantine said, "The employer pays a lot of attention to your appearance.
"It is important to look your best for [an] interview, even if that includes passing up getting a tattoo or an extra piercing," he said.
Overall, most people think it's okay to get that extra hole in one's ear or that barbed wire around a person's arm.
However, students are urged to know that career options might become limited because of many visible tattoos or piercings.
You're being ridiculous. Nobody is saying that "all" tatoos or "all" piercings are disgusting or inappropriate. But you're awfully naive, Grandma, if you think that none are.
Tattoos, especially tribal sorts, in the small of the back on young girls have a name among the young. Do you know what it is?
A ball stud piercing of the tongue serves a purpose. Do you know what it is for?

I did not say that you shouldn't "look" at the cover. Perhaps this is an analogy you can comprehend from my point of view. I've made some ugly looking pies in my day, but when one got past the "looks", the inside was deeeelicious. LOL
Perfect example, garandgal! I was feeling pretty lonely on this thread. LOL I remember years ago when my father thought that a young man I was dating must be a "hoodlum" because his hair fell past his ears. That young man turned out to be very successful "in spite of his hair". Some folks are just stuck with mud on the brain when it comes to opening their mind to the possibility that the person in front of them may be a blessing from the Lord, in spite of what they may think about his/her appearance.
LOL, when they are 90yrs old they can reminisce about how much 'this one hurt' and where they got 'this one done', etc.
I think I'll email that to my grandaughter as a warning!!
No I think what is on the inside is reflected by the choices we make, I served in the US Navy and saw first hand what happens when a sailor gets drunk in Singapore or Hong Kong, and wants to commemorate their visit.
I knew many older career men who regretted their decisions when they were unable to move up the ladder. Some were resigned to wearing long sleeve shirts buttoned at the wrist, sadly many had been foolish enough to decorate their hands, and they couldn't be covered. Most were repentant, some weren't. Of course that was over 40 years ago, I have no idea what goes on now.
I hear that. My fiancee is in the process of growing out his hair. It was half-way down his back before he had to cut it for his job last summer. He currently has 4 tats, and 7 piercings. When he wears the clear plastic barbells in his tongue (that accouns for 2 of the piercings) you wouldn't even notice them. When he wears a clear plastic earring in his ear, it's not noticable. His 4 tats are only visible if he's wearing shorts and a wife-beater, which is never.
Aside from his hair, I bet any one posting on this board would have no problem hiring him, and would be shocked to find out he has tats.
If both pie fillings are the same, I would rather have the one that looks presentable on the outside too.
It sure would be embarrassing to have to 'claim them' as your kids or grandkids, lol.
I hired teachers for a living. I wonder if the tolerant folks on this thread want either one of the kids in your post #81 teaching their children.
I'm still here and I saved that picture because it was so awful. I wouldn't want a teacher looking like that!

Well, tats on the small of the back might as well be a bulls-eye.
Also, most guys don't care if you've got a tongue ring or not. I've known more guys with tongue piercings than I have girls.
Alot of guys in frats have prince alberts of various other types piercings, so it's not just girls.
Your friend had love in her heart for her baby brother and expressed it through a tattoo. I feel quite confident that God would smile on that act of love. I'm very sorry for her and her family's loss.
You can't expect people to take you seriously when you "strain at a gnat," but they see you "swallowing a camel."
Leti is a very strong young woman. She recently turned 18 and is enlisting in the army after she graduates.
Kind of makes you wonder how many of our troops in Iraq have tats, and are being condemned by posters on this thread.
From what I understand, that's exactly why Fred Rogers wore that longsleeve shirt all those years!
I read he was a Marine and tattooed from wrist to shoulder on both arms.
