White House shake-up to continue? (Scott McClellan and John Snow)
CNN ^ | 4/3/2006 | Suzanne Malveaux

CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) -- Presidential press secretary Scott McClellan and Treasury Secretary John Snow could be next in a shake-up in the Bush administration, according to White House and GOP sources.

The possible departure of both men could be among "several senior-level staff" announcements to come within the next couple of weeks, said former White House staff members, GOP strategists and administration officials.

"You're going to have more change than you expect," one GOP insider said.

One change already has been announced: Chief of staff Andy Card officially will leave April 14 and is being replaced by Josh Bolten, director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Under one scenario, Dan Bartlett, counselor to the president, would replace McClellan, Republican officials said.

But other GOP strategists said they believe McClellan's position is secure because of his close relationship with President Bush going back to Texas. McClellan was a communications aide to the president when he was governor of the Lone Star state.

Despite the administration's public comments of support for Snow, sources inside and outside the White House have said Bush has been ready to replace the treasury chief for the past year and has been searching for an "acceptable alternative."

What is the point? To what end? Or just more political scapegoating and shell-gaming?

Getting Snow out of there would probably be a good move from a political perspective. He almost cost Bush the last election with his "losing your job to off-shoring is good for you" message when he took it on the road to places where a good number of people were hurting from losing their jobs.

That and getting the Fed to stop this interest rate hiking fetish they seem to be stuck on stupid with.

John Snow is NOT a good politician. He should be gone by now.

Scotty? Nice guy. But not the guy for the job.

If Scott leaves, who's the press corps gonna have to kick around?

"What is the point? To what end? "

In McClellan's case the point is that, he just plain stinks.

A weak man who is constantly bested by his liberal opponents every time they debate him.

"Thcott" is the pansy son of a Strayhorn. He's a legacy appointment. He does not deserve his post and does his boss (us) a dis-service by remaining.

I'm tired of that soft man.

Agree ... I've been making that point here at FR for months (as have several others) ... don't tell me the WH staff doesn't tap into FReeperland to get the pulse of real Americans who make up much of their constituent base . McClelland is toast ...

My point was, and I should have been clearer, is that isn't a bit late in the game? This adminstration has had a communications problem, since day one. Kinda like slamming the barn door after the horse has run out...McClellan and the entire communications policy of the adminstration should have been strengthened six years ago. I agree it has been pathetically weak...a long standing problem and weakness of this adminstration.

For this administration, I'd say yes. They need a communications guy who can lay the groundwork for the next ( I pray) Republican administration. May still be too late.

.....What is the point?....

Let's think on that...... consider the jobs.

There is a war in Iraq and Afganistan. There is a war in Washington with the traitors in the Democrat party. The hours are very long and the work is hard. Some might be worn to a frazzle and others just not able to keep up the pace any more.

Think of grapevines and rose bushes. To maximize the amount of grapes and roses good pruning and the resulting new growth are good things. The old growth while still productive, can't compare with the new.

To prune and regrow does not reflect badly on the old.

The old must be thanked for their service and not condemned as CNN ant the American hatriots are wont to do. Spring and regrowth are to be celebrated.

You're right about Scotty. Some of those press "conferences" seem more like Punch and Judy shows. Scott just lets the press beat the crap out of him and the President. We need someone in there who will fight back against the presstitute Pulcinellas, and McClellan ain't it.

Not too late. Laura Ingraham is available.

Unlike Scott McClellan, a nice guy who probably finished last at the high school debates, the WH press secretary should be someone able to smoothly conduct verbal judo. Remember, the difference between judo and karate and other martial arts forms is in the beauty of using the adversary's own weight, strength and momentum to your advantage. In the public eye, the press secretary cannot be openly insulting or condescending to the press, or the press will turn public opinion with story after story about how mean and the WH is. As much fun as it would be to see Ann Coulter (eg.) rip the MSM weenies a new one, every question has to be patiently and skillfully shown to be biased, loaded, argumentative and/or based on false premises. Then the response should re-frame the issue to deliver the President's message, again and again (staying on message). That's why Laura's good humor combined with her legal experience would make her ideal. So let the call go forth: "Laura for WH press secretary!!!"

"In McClellan's case the point is that, he just plain stinks."

I am sure he is very talented, just not at what he's been doing - it's painfull to watch him up there (he always looks as though he is being forced to go up there at gun-point).
Of course I think we tend to measure him against Ari, which is probably unfair because Ari was, well, a genious at what he did.

Shake up? Isn't this about the time that folks typically leave a 2nd term administration? I know it happened during Reagan and x42's 2nd terms. Doesn't sound apolcalyptic to me.

Snow must go. :(

Snow is a fiscal conservative. Bush is a big spender.
These two types don't get along well...
