In its debate over how to change the U.S. immigration system, Washington neglected the impact in Mexico - which faces a crossroads election this summer.
And Mexico's choice could not be more important to the United States.
On July 2, the Mexican people will decide whether to elect ultra-leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (known as AMLO) as their next president.

When they elect a bona fide Marxist in Mexico, do you think Washington will see a threat then?
do you think Washington will see a threat then?
Can't see a threat with blinders on !
Mexico has always been (technically) a Socialist state, and it functions like one: a crummy economy, no opportunities for the non-wealthy, and a huge, corrupt bureaucracy sitting on top of everything. Furthermore, Mexico has always prided itself on being anti-American.
I doubt that much would change with Mexico, except that this candidate has the backing of Hugo Chavez and this would be seen in LatAm as another grand slam by Hugo. And this would not be a good thing, since we have been "dealing" with Hugo by ignoring him and hoping he'll just fade away. He won't, and he's even less likely to do so once he gets into Mexico.
Meanwhile if this character is elected we have 12-20 million of their citizens in place in this country to overtake it. They already showed what they can do this entire week by protesting, this has become a even more serious crisis come July. Washington better get their act together and send these people back immediately!!!
You have to wonder if they'll close the borders in typical commie fashion.
The mexicans who are here have already shown their hatred toward America and Americans while protesting, these invaders are dangerous. And come July if the election goes badly than there will a coup here by the very people that our govt refuses to deport.
A recent survey by John Zogby found that two-thirds of Mexicans feel Americans are racist and biased against them.
Than STOP coming here.
Wait this article was written by Dick Morris? The liberal gone Republican? Aha. Well that puts a whole different spin on this but he may have a point.
The sky is falling, the sky is falling...let us not get anyone any angrier at us--doomed, we are doomed!!!
Please get over this nonsence, we are the most powerful most patience nation that has ever been in existance, a nation made up of so many nationalities that I would venture to say the worlds lanquages are spoke here every day.
We are not exercising our might as the most powerful nation in the world as have other in similar situation in times past, we do not take territory by force, we do not attack at will, we give as far as I am concerned too many warnings to those wishing us harm.
With us willing to sign so many free trade agreements from Cafta to Nafta we are proving we are not out to isolate ourselves, rather other countries wish to isolate themselves from us, let Mexico do what it wishes, let Venezuela, Peru and others do likewise, a socialist government in Mexico will cause a wall to go up much faster, our being cut off from petroleum exporting countries, will cause either our own oil fields to be open or an alternate fuel invented sooner.
We are very slow to action but once we start watch out.
We are on overload with all this Mexican garbage. They don't want to become Americans, they want to take over.
As villified as Fox is, he is responsible for opening up huge sections of the Mexican economy, and bringing a third world version of prosperity to millions (and no, I am not talking about the millions of dollars in wire transfers back to Mexico from the USA).
We are looking at a potential slamming shut of a struggling nascent economy.
If that happens, the biggest wall in the world won't keep them out.
My first post on free republic, by the way.
Please go back to the dark side dickie.
No, Washington will just give them all amnesty so they'll be happy little campers and not rise up.
The Communist influence in the south must be licking their chops when they see a 'wide open' US border. Wasn't this part of the 'Red Dawn' scenerio?
