Father learned daughter connected to Duke case from media reports (Duke Lacrosse Coach Threatened)
Knight Ridder Newspapers; WRAL; NBC17 | TONYA JAMESON

Posted on 03/31/2006 8:03:52 PM PST by Howlin

DURHAM, N.C. - The father of the woman who has accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said he didn't find out that his daughter was the reported victim - and that she is an exotic dancer - until a reporter visited his house.

The retired trucker who lives in Durham said he saw his daughter the day after the reported attack, but she didn't say anything was wrong. She even left her car at the house for several days because he said she didn't want to drive it.

Her father, a quiet man who tinkers on cars as a hobby, said he saw news reports about the attack.

"I didn't know it was my daughter," he said. The Charlotte Observer generally does not name victims of sexual assault, so his name is being withheld to protect the identity of his daughter.

The case has ignited campus protests and stirred racial tension in Durham. The woman at the center of the case is black, and the men she accuses are white. She also is a student at N.C. Central University, a historically black college near Durham's inner-city, compared with the more expensive Duke campus.

DNA tests have been conducted on 46 of the lacrosse players, who deny the allegations. A 47th member, who is black, was not tested because the woman said her attackers were white.

Last week, a reporter stopped by the reported victim's house looking for her, the woman's father said, but he said he didn't know what was going on. He called his daughter and she said the district attorney told her not talk to anyone.

"(She) didn't tell us anything about it," he said.

He said he also found out through the media that his daughter, who is the youngest of three, was an exotic dancer.

"She always told me she was going to work," he said.

On Friday, he installed a timing belt in a car and watched his daughter's two children play outside the house. He said working on cars and playing with the grandchildren helps take his mind off what's happening with his daughter.

He said she seems to be doing "pretty good," and so is the rest of the family. He said they haven't talked much about the reported incident, but it weighs heavily on his mind. He said he's grateful that N.C. Central has been so supportive, but he doesn't like how his daughter has been portrayed in the media. And he's especially frustrated that no one has been charged in the connection with the allegations.

"If it had been anybody but them, they would have been locked up, but yet they didn't because it's Duke," he said. "I hope them boys - if they did it - I hope they get what they deserve. I hope they don't go lenient on them."

District Attorney Michael Nifong said he's waiting for results of the DNA test and that he does not expect to file charges in the case any earlier than next week.

Do you know who and how many students Wade Smith is representing?

Attorneys say Duke team members innocent

SUTTON: Right now, as far as we know, besides Mr. Williams there's Joe Chesser is representing one out of Raleigh. Wade Smith I understand is going to represent another player. He is out of Raleigh. Bob Ekstrand, of course, here in Durham, at this time is representing many of the team members and there's, I believe, one other attorney that we're aware of, who's representing one other player. But they may have made contacts that we're not aware of.

Was the photographing done by the police or at the insistence of the students' attorneys?

Is it true that the lawyers have hired private investigators?

Is the 2nd "exotic dancer" from a different agency white or black?

Did the 2nd "exotic dancer" ever go into the house either the 1st time or the 2nd?

Sorry to bother w/so many questions. Expect the Escort agencies to find their bookings dropping off in the future. (BTW has the DA ever investigated THEM?

There is, however, possibly a different side to the story—a chapter from another Tom Wolfe novel, "The Bonfire of the Vanities," a tale of a prosecutor exploiting racial tensions with a trumped-up charge. The players say they are completely innocent, that no one had sex with the stripper that night and that they will be vindicated by DNA tests expected early this week. Joseph Cheshire, a lawyer representing one of the players, says that the prosecutor has unfairly tried the players in the media to serve his own political agenda. (Nifong is up for re-election in May and one of his opponents is black.) "The real story," says Cheshire, "is how he has pandered to the public to stir up race and class division." Nifong did not respond to repeated requests for comment on Cheshire's charge.

...But if the three lacrosse captains who occupy the house had anything to hide, they didn't act like it. They cooperated in the search and voluntarily went down to the police station to give statements, without lawyers present. Their offer to take a lie-detector test was rebuffed by police. No one accompanied her into the bathroom, the players told police. Defense lawyer Cheshire says, "Evidence I've heard indicates that the accuser was acting as if she was inebriated by some substance at the party." He added, "The defense is looking closely into the background of the accuser."

...The players' families reject the cliché that the Duke players are privileged louts. Two of the players are sons of retired New York City firemen who responded to the 9/11 attacks.

Father of alleged Duke rape victim speaks out

'The Abrams Report' speaks with N.C. District Attorney about the case

ABRAMS: Let me ask you, has there been an examination of any of the players, because the woman has said that she effectively tried to fight them off, that she broke off some of her nails in the process of grabbing someone's arm I guess it was. You would think that the person involved in that would have marks on his arm if that were the case. Click for a related story 'Abrams Report' homepage Read Dan Abrams' 'Sidebar blawg' Dan Abrams' bio NIFONG: That's a possibility, and certainly we did investigate that particular possibility. But let me point out that the evidence that she would present with respect to that particular situation is that she was grabbed from behind. So that in essence, somebody had an arm around her like this, which she then had to struggle with in order to be able to breathe, and it was in the course of that struggle that the fingernails—the artificial fingernails broke off.

Now as you can see from my arm, if I were wearing a shirt, a long-sleeved shirt or a Jacket of some sort, even if there were enough force used to press down, to break my skin through the clothing, there might not be any way that anything from my arm could get on to those fingernails. So again, whether or not there would be any evidence would depend on exactly the situation. Were the fingernails actually in contact with the skin or were they in contact with clothing?

Rape allegation at Duke shaded by race, class

Prosecutors obtained a court order compelling 46 of the 47 team members to give DNA samples and have their torsos photographed (The prosecutors did not give the test to the 47th player because he is black and the woman has sworn that the attackers were white.) Results of the DNA test are due this week. Meanwhile, the players scrimmaged on a Duke practice field late Friday afternoon. Duke is a national lacrosse power and is ranked sixth in the country.

The shame of this is unconscionable. Still, these women will surely sleep better this evening than the black woman injured at 610 Buchanan Boulevard by the white lacrosse team's out-of-control violent partying will ever again rest in her life.

Prof. Baker sure likes to use the "white" word doesn't he? I wonder if he wrote a similar screed about Sheldon and his not so "white" high school teammates and their not so "white" basketball coach. Do you think he even cares why S.W. missed the state tournament his senior year? I wonder how the young ladies of Ohio sleep when Duke comes to town?

Howlin, thanks for posting that Abrams interview. If there remained any doubt that Nifong is incompetent, all doubt has now been removed imo.

In some municipalities where the college is as big as the town, they intentionally schedule their city elections for when school is out of session. Why have transients decide who runs the city?

He thought she should not be labeled as an exotic dancer.

I'd say that's being kind. If the dancer was hired through an escort service, that ought to be even more tainted. More people would be sympathetic to a stripper than they would be for a whore.

Durham is larger than Duke which is a relatively small private school - not like the huge state schools. When I was there there was a big flap about students registering to vote in Durham. I can't remember the outcome but I believe the students were eventually allowed to vote. That was 20 years ago so things may have changed since then.

There was in fact a police investigation of this incident which concluded there was no evidence on which to bring charges. Kids who spoke to reporters about what happened said this particular young man did not touch the girl who made the allegation. But I assume you must have some personal knowledge of this incident which contradicts the police investigation and what the high school kids have said, because otherwise it would be irresponsible of you to be implying what you are. Perhaps you were also in the room with Kobe and that young lady, and can also tell us exactly what happened in that case? By all means please lay out the facts so we can all know.

Your 564. My sentiments exactly. When she first started out at Fox I thought she was pretty fair minded. Her performance last night made me want to puke. She made no attempt at being fair and balanced, just threw innocent until proven guilty out the window.

i didn't see last night, but i saw her last weekend along with Julie Banderas when they were waiting for the preacher's wife to be brought back to Selmer, TN to the jail. it was ridiculous. For one thing, during Julie's segment they wanted people to CALL IN and say what they think her motive was!! OMG how tabloid is that? no one has any earthly notion nor any information, but they encouraged people to call in and hypothesize about what it was. Then some woman called in and said she could see it in her eyes that she was abused, that she herself was a pastor's wife and had been abused! rank speculation! it was absolutely the WORST i have seen from Fox to date.
