DURHAM, N.C. - The father of the woman who has accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said he didn't find out that his daughter was the reported victim - and that she is an exotic dancer - until a reporter visited his house.
The retired trucker who lives in Durham said he saw his daughter the day after the reported attack, but she didn't say anything was wrong. She even left her car at the house for several days because he said she didn't want to drive it.
Her father, a quiet man who tinkers on cars as a hobby, said he saw news reports about the attack.
"I didn't know it was my daughter," he said. The Charlotte Observer generally does not name victims of sexual assault, so his name is being withheld to protect the identity of his daughter.
The case has ignited campus protests and stirred racial tension in Durham. The woman at the center of the case is black, and the men she accuses are white. She also is a student at N.C. Central University, a historically black college near Durham's inner-city, compared with the more expensive Duke campus.
DNA tests have been conducted on 46 of the lacrosse players, who deny the allegations. A 47th member, who is black, was not tested because the woman said her attackers were white.
Last week, a reporter stopped by the reported victim's house looking for her, the woman's father said, but he said he didn't know what was going on. He called his daughter and she said the district attorney told her not talk to anyone.
"(She) didn't tell us anything about it," he said.
He said he also found out through the media that his daughter, who is the youngest of three, was an exotic dancer.
"She always told me she was going to work," he said.
On Friday, he installed a timing belt in a car and watched his daughter's two children play outside the house. He said working on cars and playing with the grandchildren helps take his mind off what's happening with his daughter.
He said she seems to be doing "pretty good," and so is the rest of the family. He said they haven't talked much about the reported incident, but it weighs heavily on his mind. He said he's grateful that N.C. Central has been so supportive, but he doesn't like how his daughter has been portrayed in the media. And he's especially frustrated that no one has been charged in the connection with the allegations.
"If it had been anybody but them, they would have been locked up, but yet they didn't because it's Duke," he said. "I hope them boys - if they did it - I hope they get what they deserve. I hope they don't go lenient on them."
District Attorney Michael Nifong said he's waiting for results of the DNA test and that he does not expect to file charges in the case any earlier than next week.
I wonder if Duke students can vote in local elections? How does that work?
If they can't or don't, one can see how this might play out for the DA.
Then Dr. Baden chimed in to say that the "victim" was being further victimized by being labeled in the media as an "exotic" dancer. Instead, she is also a college student who works to support her children and put herself through school. He's right. She does do that. AS AN EXOTIC DANCER! He and Ms. Guilfoyle were so feeding into each other's hysteria that I finally had to turn the station or throw something at the TV.
Except for the smile, she looks embalmed.
Just jumping in here... but did you all notice the female lawyer stop her and say "knock off the victim business... you people slant these cases against the defense by doing that."
Perhaps those famous 15 minutes, you think!

I don't know. My guess is that students usually don't vote in local elections whether they are eligible to or not. Someone ought to find out what the law says. If they're eligible, then they ought to organize and get students registered to vote in the upcoming election. They are being attacked by the media, the community and it looks like the DA. He should pay a price. I'm still not sure these students are innocent. But I really hate what the DA is trying to do to them. If the DNA showed their guilt, I think he would release it.
Oh my!
What is he talking about? She idenfitied herself as an "escort" in the N&O article.
"Now the DA, who just happens to be up for reelection in May and decided to "try" the case himself rather than giving it to an assistant..."
Exactly like our (WI) up-for-reelection AG, Peg "The Keg" Lautenschlager. She tried to redeem herself after her DUI arrest in a State vehicle by personally prosecuting the Chai Vang deer hunter murder last year. It was a total slam-dunk. I, however, remain unimpressed with her, or anyone that grandstands in this manner.
As for this girl's story...I'll wait and see what the DNA evidence suggests.
That would be Kerry Sutton.
Top video on the left, 'Blue Devil'ish Behavior?
She comes on about halfway thru. This is only five minutes of Kimberly's show last night; it was the OTHER 20 minutes that was so damn devastating, IMO.
I would not mess with Kerry Sutton, if I were the DA.
He thought she should not be labeled as an exotic dancer. She should be described as a college student who works. This conversation took place in the context of media complicity of racism. White students being protected. Black dancer's character maligned. It was a disgusting conversation and I couldn't believe that Dr. Baden was a part of it.
Get your fair and balanced tabloid here - Fox News!
I heard that, too. It was unreal. He went right over the cliff.
I admit. I really like Greta's show and I like following media coverage of interesting cases. But I want it fair. I like to get facts and try to figure it out the best I can. That's probably one of the reasons I like Greta's show. But when I see the case tried in the media so that defendants will probably never get a fair trial, then I have to re-assess. Fox is getting awful.
Sister McKinney is recognized WORLD WIDE, and the guard was at fault for not knowing her.
"It" was not a crime but rather a "political football" and racial profiling of black women and children....and the biggy? The guard had TOUCHED the sister. (Not even mentioned was her touching him with her cell phone.)
Finally, she's up and talks of nothing but what she has been doing to serve her people (any white constituents?). NOTHING about what she had done to evade and strike the guard.
McKinney is UNTOUCHABLE.
(I did agree w/one thing that was said...that there is a double standard......but not in the way THEY meant it.)
I believe you'll find that evidence crucial to a criminal investigation is privileged from discovery until charges have been filed.
I agree completely. I think if you know the events and have at least a basic knowledge of what goes on, you've even more upset when you hear the spin.
We lived in Greensboro back in the late 70s when the Klan had their shot out; it was a bunch of good old boys versus the Communist Workers Party (headquartered in -- tada -- Durham).
By the time it hit the CBS News that night, we got calls from all over the country, wondering if we were all in the streets (in sheets) with guns killing each other. It was amazing.
Listen to the top left video with Kerry Sutton; she comes on about 3 minutes into the report:

She plainly says that the local regulations calls for him to give it to her.
