West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon has anxiously kept his sexual orientation a secret his entire political career.
He broke his silence on the subject Wednesday night at the annual State of the City dinner at West Sacramento City Hall.
"The pressure and the stigma and sometimes the all too casual bigotry in this town made it painfully clear when I first ran for office that I could either serve this community or I could be a gay man. But I could not be both," Cabaldon said.
His disclosure - planned well in advance - concluded a speech focusing on levees, "walkable" communities and schools. After celebrating the accomplishments of the city and discussing the future, he disclosed that he was gay.
Cabaldon said he decided to disclose he's gay to make it easier for other gays and lesbians wrestling with making their sexual orientation public.
In an interview this week, Cabaldon said when he began his political career, he thought he couldn't disclose the matter. So rather than lead a double life or a secret life, Cabaldon said he decided he couldn't have a personal life.
"Nobody could really out me before because I wasn't dating," said Cabaldon. "I'm still not dating or anything like that."
His heartfelt address Wednesday night brought the crowd of 150 developers, business and political leaders to a standing ovation, some with tears in their eyes.
Developer Bryan Taylor said, "We couldn't be more proud of our mayor."
The 41-year-old mayor's unusual "coming out" will be carried in documentary form on an MTV Networks cable channel featuring gay-themed programming. A crew working for the Logo channel has been shadowing Cabaldon for the better part of a week. The program is expected to air in July.

I think he was being blackmailed and about to be involuntarily outed so (now that he thinks he's brought in enough other sodomites to vote for him) he outed himself as a preemptive political move.

Those afflicted with SAD tend to be incredibly self absorbed and do nothing for others so any idea that he did it for the greater good of 'gays and lesbians everywhere' is bogus
Since homosexuality is defined entirely by behavior how would he know he's 'homosexual' if he were celibate? Besides that, one of the accompanying symptoms of the disease is rampant promiscuity. There may be a celibate 'homosexual' out there but I wouldn't bet on it as celibacy goes against everything their culture promotes
As with any politician I am concerned about their character, so I am VERY concerned about this homo mayor. No not just because he is a sexual deviate, but because he seems to feel it is perfectly OK to lie when it suits him or to get something he wants. Morally bankrupt... but then hardly surprising given what we now know him to be eh?

I've worked in the 'gay community' for many years, and as a homosexual myself, I can support your views that homosexuals are incredibly self-absorbed with their/our sexual interests and fulfillment.
Homosexuality is very devious, and sexual motives cloak themselves in all sorts of self-deceptions in order to justify themselves.
I find your posts hot, which is a natural homosexual instinct for the afliction to be attacked by normal men. This is something that most homosexuals hide and deny.
The Mayor knows how much he will be attacked, mocked and 'abused' after his revelation, but that isn't necesarily something that a homosexual will find repellant.
He clearly has a strong instinct to indulge his affliction, and allow it full reign. Hasn't he virtually admitted that?

It's unusual to be welcomed to a Conservative forum as a homosexual. I also used to be a liberal. But age and wisdom open the eyes more clearly.
I've seen and been involved in the homo ajenda, and this episode with the Mayor is simply another expression of it.
It's unhealthy for society at large, and should be seen for what it is.
