The Costs of Amnesty
NRO ^ | 30 Mar 06 | Jim Boulet Jr.

Given that Democratic Leader Harry Reid has threatened to filibuster any immigration bill that does not include amnesty for illegal aliens, someone should ask him a basic question: What happens to state budgets when twelve million illegal aliens become eligible for Medicaid and food stamps?

Right now, illegal aliens are largely ineligible for a whole panoply of federal programs simply because of their immigration status.

As the Pew Hispanic Center reported last year: "[A]bout a quarter of all drywall and ceiling tile installers in the United States are unauthorized migrants, as are about a quarter of all meat and poultry workers and a quarter of all dishwashers." Whatever the nobility of honest labor, hanging drywall and washing dishes has not exactly been the road to riches.

It's worth noting that "illegal immigration" was never an issue in this country

Yes, I remember when things turned. These people were warned also but they could not fathom reality. Now we are paying the price. Illegal immigration was once a win/win deal and everyone looked the other way, now most everyone just looks the other way.

Yep, bye-bye GOP in '06 and maybe '08. Their own fault...

NO IT'S NOT! If you don't swallow the OBL BS, and PROUDLY pull that lever for TRAITORS then YOU are the problem, not the OBL's that made you rethink your party vs principles stand.

Vote Republican, we're slightly less disgusting than Democrats!

Except for liver transplants - we all know that Mexicans are just a bunch of drunks!

Wow, and people call the anti-illegal side racist! I would have never said or thought this, but that's ok because we have you for that.

Thanks, I was just going to let the stupid remark go, but you really answered him back a lot better than I would have, spectre.

Kinda like siding with Iraq over Iran back in the 1980s. One's a known enemy, the policies of the other will come back to bite you in arse years later.

Why don't you move on and set up that soup kitchen you were obsessing about a few days ago.

Actually, we ended up kind of siding with both sides.

One takes you over the cliff at 60 mph and the other promises that the Government will make the car fly (this time).

I believe he said something like (para phasing) "well there is demand for (illegal) immigrate labor and there is nothing we can do about it so we may as well make it legal"

So why don't we ally that logic to say the war on drugs?

The demand for illegal labor or else "we cannot keep our business running" is the same argument used for keeping salvery legal before the Civial War: We need the cheap labor.

Ask him, too, about the dependents of those twelve million that will be allowed to follow them here. What could the number reach? Twenty-four, thirty-six million in less than a year?

Reid is playing to the progressive left crowd. Since 1978 there have been at least 6 amnesties given to illegal aliens. Do we really need another?
Sorry Reid, go pedal your papers somewhere else. Russia maybe?
Build the wall, put the National Guard on the border, and expel as many of the illegals as we can. Then we will see a reduction in illegals, crime and drug traffic. If that isn't enough I don't know what is.

What really makes my blood boil is hearing our own President say, "Doing the jobs American won't do." He might as well say, "You stupid, fat, lazy Americans, if it weren't for Mexico you idiots would just let this country fall apart." I find his remark to be insulting, unsupportive, and anti-American.

I so agree with you!

DOUG from Upland started with this thread U.S. BORDER PATROL: Turn In Illegal Aliens (and employers, followed by this one U.S. BORDER CONTROL Turn in illegal aliens

Go to either thread for more details on what to do. The TOLL FREE number to report ILLEGAL aliens or those employing ILLEGAL aliens to ICE is: 866-347-2423

How it works:

You are not required to provide your identity to ICE. All that is necessary to request an investigation by ICE is mere suspicion of any activity by ILLEGAL aliens.

ICE and the IRS are especially interested in "visiting" those businesses that employ ILLEGALS "off the books" to avoid the payment of payroll taxes.

Latinos Plan Nationwide Worker Strike

I suggest looking around and see if you might spot a suspect. At work, at school, at a job sight, Micky D's, Store etc.

On the day(current plan is May 1) of this march check to see if you can determine if someone took the day off. Confirming grounds for suspicion.

Then MAKE THE CALL
Again the number is
866-347-2423

:) Easy Does It

So, if we restore that qualification--that immigrants are not permitted to become a public charge--then an amnesty need not increase our welfare payouts.

This is still on the books and part of the legal immigration process. When someone petitions to bring in a relative, he must file an Affidavit of Support which shows he has the means to support the immigrant and promising to reimburse the government if the immigrant becomes a public charge. It is just another facet of immigration law that is not enforced.

Dingy Harry and the other rats better start paying attention to their precious polls. 70% to 90% of the U.S. (legal) population wants illegal immigration halted. That includes more of Dingy Harry's constituents than he can afford to lose at election time.

I suspect that the primary impetus for allowing these people to flood into the country is that they represent new consumers, not just workers.

I think you've hit on something there. That would explain the push to get them legalized. Those who want cheap labor may or may not benefit from a guest worker program, depending on whether the increased (i.e. legal) wages and fringes they'll have to pay will be offset by downward pressure on wages from higher supply. That question makes no difference to those who want to sell to the illegals. They just want the waves of new customers.

I'm surprised that the borders aren't a freeway right now.

the probably are - I saw a blurb in a Mexican paper on Tuesday, after the immigration bill passed out of the Judiciary Committee. The headline said that the US had approved the guest worker program.
