Coast-to-coast 'movement' rages on
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | March 28, 2006 | Guy Taylor

The Roman Catholic Church, dozens of grass-roots coalitions and Spanish-language radio disc jockeys have helped fuel protests nationwide against congressional efforts to tackle illegal immigration....

The Catholic Church has played a key role in opposing legislation to restrict immigration and rallying protesters....

"As we've been able to reach more and more people, they're waking up to the ills of the proposals made to date and seeing the need to be vocal about the kinds of reforms that would be more acceptable," said Mark D. Franken, executive director of migration and refugee services for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops....

The bishops conference in May began "Justice for Immigrants," a campaign focused on activating a network of grass-roots movements against punitive immigration-reform legislation....

Mr. Franken said all the nation's 197 Catholic dioceses are in some way backing the campaign, with more than 70 being particularly active. Disseminating pamphlets and networking, community-level groups tied to the campaign are operating "in churches and everywhere they can gain access," he said.

Aiding and abetting breaking the law, as what Mahony is doing, is quite another.

How is Mahoney advocating breaking the law.

What he said he would resist is any provision such as the one contained in the House bill, passed in December, which said that priests and those in ministry who deal with Hispanics would have to ask for "papers." They would also risk jail if they ministered to someone who was unable to produce those papers.

Thankfully, that draconian provision has already been voted down by the Senate and will not be included in any bill coming out of that body.

And, it will likely not be part of any final bill.

Mahony flat out said here

that he would instruct his priests to defy legislation — if approved by Congress — that would require churches and other social organizations to ask immigrants for the legal documentation.

That means breaking the law should it pass.

The House bill already passed. Whether it survives the Senate...and what we saw yesterday, I will agree with you...I doubt it will.

They should be more concerned about the behavior of the Mexican government and how they treat their people.

I don't know any priest, deacon or layman in ministry who would not defy that legislation.

It is not in the job description of clerics to be in law enforcement.

That was a ridiculous provision, and it is to the good that it is gone.

I agree, it is not their job to enforce law.

But they are obliged, as citizens, to follow the laws of the land (per what the Catechism states), and that means the current laws that are on the books.

Night night, Sink.

A law that interferes with the ability of ministers to actually minister is a law that ought to be ignored.

The Senate Judiciary Committee recognized that right away and voted, unanimously, to eliminate the provision.

While the Catholic bishops sell property bought and paid for by the laity in order to pay for pedophile priests' law suits, they are undermining the social strata by pushing illegal aliens into the work force of this country. Maybe they think they will have more money in the Sunday collection. Thinking Catholics have ignored the collection plates.

The Late Sixties tainted the Church as well as the citizen, almost like some noxious ether.

I haven't heard a priest preach since the late Sixties, and I'd love to be assured that 3% of them believe in private property, the rule of law, and the right to bear arms...

I thank you for posting that excerpt from the catechism. I WILL quote that to Mahoney-Baloney tomorrow when I fax him.

Well, looks like Liberation Theology is making a comeback. Right here in the USA. I'm not Catholic and don't expect it will happen. But I'd love to see Ratzinger lecture Mahoney like JPII did that one Lib. Theology priest in Nicarauga...

Yes! I forgot about this. That was great how John Paul II sent a message regarding the vatican not tolerating Liberation Theology. Now my memory alludes me here, but didn't Razinger also have a hand in this somehow (that got him his old nickname Rotweiller?) God Bless Benedict. I trust he will take this one on as God leads him and in its own time.

Can you believe this comparison of Mexican and U.S. immigration laws?

Talk about a racist legal system...

Aren't you good! Don't know where you're from, but the Boston Archdiocese is in a mess. "Cardinal" Law aided and abetted the pedophiles and should be cooling his butt in jail instead of Rome. "Cardinal" O'Malley sells church property out from under the laity who worked and paid for it. I don't give at Mass, instead I send checks to various charities who need it more than the big shots in their fine dresses, robes and mitres.

Two points:

#1: Most of the American bishops who are supporting this nonsense would hardly be considered Catholic on any other issue. They can't be bothered to speak out against homo marriage or abortion, for example.

#2: The Church teaches that Catholics should obey the just laws of the countries in which they live. I don't recall any teaching which says that immigration laws are unjust and may be set aside without committing a sin.

IIRC, I saw it in the film version of George Weigel's "Witness To Hope".
That lib-theology guerilla priest looked like a puppy that probably had some
bladder-control problems while getting a good scolding!
If you've not seen it, I highly recommend that documentary; it may be
available on amazon.com.

Most priests in the Catholic Church tend to lean toward socialist preachings.

Do you have any idea how foolish that sounds? You experienced a few commie priests. They exist, no doubt about it. There are many commie bishops as well. But there are many more true bishops and priests who take Pope Pius XI said seriously:

"No one can be at the same time a sincere Catholic and a true socialist." (Quadragesimo Anno, 1931)

The communists have marked the Church as a major opponent of theirs and have been trying, with varying degrees of success, to infiltrate it from the very beginning. What you witnessed was one of the dioceses where they were/are successful. They have not been nearly as successful worldwide. It was recently revealed that the assassination attempt against John Paul II was engineered by the KGB. Now, if the Catholic Church was run by commies, why would the KGB want to take out the Pope?

You should have tried to learn something about the Faith of your Fathers before abandoning it.

Between pervert priests and this immigration nonsense, my church is making me very angry. They still, however, get it right on pro-life.

The Vatican, which never accepted the concept of separation of church and state and is a de facto state, moves over the long term. The objective is capture of North America. The time required is a long as it takes.

Dan Brown, is that you?

Shouldn't the IRS be fining the RCC for political involvement? They watch Baptists churches like hawks, revoking tax-exempt status for passing out voter guides. If the RCC is up to its ears in politics, it should have its tax exempt status taken away. Fair is fair. No church is above the law.
