Mahony flat out said here

that he would instruct his priests to defy legislation — if approved by Congress — that would require churches and other social organizations to ask immigrants for the legal documentation.

I don't know any priest, deacon or layman in ministry who would not defy that legislation.

It is not in the job description of clerics to be in law enforcement.

That was a ridiculous provision, and it is to the good that it is gone.

I agree, it is not their job to enforce law.

But they are obliged, as citizens, to follow the laws of the land (per what the Catechism states), and that means the current laws that are on the books.
