Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

I'm for a guest worker program

Me too but the intake interview is in Mexico City, only males, ages 18 to 40, are accepted and the Mexican government picks up all the health and transportation costs.

I just sent $200.00 to Sherrod Brown to help beat DeWine

Well at least you are being honest that you are democrat, unlike others on FR who proclaim themselves "true conservatives".

BTW, sherrod brown is a commie/islamofascist appeaser.

Why don't you put a rubber band around your head and snap out of it. You have gone completely around the bend.

You are truly loony, also your looniness how come you don't cite the people who are closing down and putting the hospitals out of business, the trial lawyers.

If that helps you sleep at night -- great. But we all know it is the unpaid illegals. Lawsuits (none of which were filed against my local hospital ) are a drop in the bucket .

Sleep well knowing your comfort and aid to the enemy is killing legal Americans.

We will need to pay them back come November

Maybe sooner. If willful failure to protect American sovereignty is an impeachable offense, then they should be impeached or removed.

Everything that has happened this day is an attack on America's foundation and it should be treated as such.

This is just an agreement on where to start the actual debate when the bill is read.

This action today is the congress taking a feeler on the pulse of America, the ones who matter, legal residents.

Hit 'em hard in the morning using the phone and email and tell them what you think.

This event could be the pivotal moment, the so-called, tipping point, in the development of the modern cultural world. The question becomes, will North America become the shite hole that is Mexico, or will we use the ballot box and the God given right to defend ourselves through the second amendment to hold back the invasion? It is now up to us, if we indeed wish to remain a free republic.

Just heard Major Garrett on Fox say the Frist will not let this bill come to the Senate floor...

I predict Frist will substitute the Committee Bill for his. The Judiciary Committee considered and duly passed a bill. I think it sets up a very awkward precedent if the majority leader substitutes his personal will for the will of the appropriate committee.

Otherwise, Frist is tending toward outcome-based action, instead of rule-based action. What other actions of Committees will he overrride?

It's going to be up to the House to kill this damn thing.

It will, which means nothing will be passed this year on immigration. Nothing.

Which is exactly what has happened every time, over the last 20 years, the issue has come up.

I agree. I have made no secret of the fact that I think Bush is one of the worst Presidents in U.S. history. If there was a reasonable opposition party, I would most definitely be calling for impeachment.

As to your comments.
No one wants to address the real problem,,
NAFTA NAFTA NAFTA,
BACK IN THE 90 THIS WAS PASSED WITH ALOT OF OPPOSITION FROM UNION WORKERS BIG NAME BRAND COMPANIES EXPLOITING WORKERS IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES LOW WAGES AND BIG COMPANIES MAKE A LARGE PROFIT. TAKING JOBS FROM THIS COUNTRY TO BENEFIT THEMSELFS . MONEY TALKS BULL... WALKS AND THEY TAKE NO CONSIDERATION OF WHAT YOU THINK OR DO. YET EVERYONE AS USUAL PLAYS THE BLAME GAME ON UNDOUMENTED WORKERS WHY THEY COME HERE TO WORK YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT YOUR LOBBYIST AND

BIG COPERATE COMPANIES WHO CAUSED THE PROBLEM TO GROW BIGGER THEN YOU THINK. THEY NEED TO BRING OUT THE REAL RUT OF THE PROBLEM OF IMMIGRATION. YES I DO BELEIVE IN THE LAW OF THIS COUNTRY .BUT THERE IS ALOT OF ISSUES MORE THAN YOU CAN COMPREHEND, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS IN THE COOPERATE WORLD . YES WE HAVE A PROBLEM ALL COPERATE COMPANIES WHO GO ABROAD SHOULD PAY THE SAME COST OF LABOR AS THEY WOULD HERE IN US.THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE A BREAK. OR BE ABLE TO MONOPOLIZE FREE TRADE AND LABOR.

MAYBE THEY SHOULD GET TOUGHER ON UN DOCUMENTED LABOR HIRING . THAN THEY GO AND RECRUIT ALOT OF PEOPLE OFF OF SKID ROAD AND WELFARE LINES AND PUT THEM TO WORK IN THE FIELDS ,PACKING PLANTS,ETC.
HELP THOSE FARMERS TO PUT FOOD ON YOUR TABLE. FARMERS ALREADY GETTING SCREWD BY THE GOEVERMENT ANY WAY, PARENTS NEED TO PUT THERE KIDS TO WORK AT THE FARMS MAYBE WE WOULD NOT ; HAVE SO MUCH PROBLEMS WITH DRUGS,ALCHOL, TEEN REBELLION ,PREGNACY AND SO FORTH. PARENTS NEED TO QUIT MAKING IT SO EASY AND PUT THEM TO WORK THE JOBS NO ONE WANTS TO. MAYBE SENDING EVERYONE BACK TO THEIR COUNTRYS MIGHT NOT BE BAD AFTER ALL.
Then maybe we will appreciate THE JOBS WE DO HAVE.
IF THATS WANT IT TAKES TO PUT AMERICANS BACK TO WORK AND DO THE HARD WORK NO ONE WANTS . GOOD
I PRAY FOR THE FARMERS THOUGH THEY ARE THE BACKBONE OF
THIS COUNTRY.
QUIT BLAMING OTHERS DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TALK AND MAYBE YOU WILL SEE WHO IS REALLY RUNNING THE SHOW.

Thanks for the ping! My stance has not changed significantly. I have spent a fair amount of time at http://uscis.gov/graphics/index.htm , and discussed this with some associates. The increased security is a good thing. The deference on changing a civil violation to a criminal felony is likewise a good thing. My justification for this is based upon interstate travel and work as a US citizen. I work in states (and countries) other than my state of permanent residence. I may stay in another state (or country) for more than 90 days. Each state (and many countries) have different requirements for declaring residency. For example, I traveled from Texas to Virginia and stayed in an extended stay apartment; paying a monthly lease for 6 months. I had my corporate office forward mail to the extended stay. I did not file a change of address for my personal mail, since I still maintained a homestead in Texas; and my payroll was mailed to/direct deposited in Texas. While in Virginia, I committed the high felony of receiving a parking citation for the rental car. It turns out that Avis showed the address of the extended stay on the contract. Long story short, I could not pay the citation in person, since I did not have a Virginia ID.

This is not the end of the republic. Anyone calling for violent uprising is not a patriot; furthermore they are a pariah to be shunned. Twenty years after President Reagan persuaded congress to act, the political and economic environment has changed. So be it. Our great republic was built upon a solid foundation. I have confidence that no single man, committee, or demonstration will bring this great country to ruin.
