ACLU Rebukes Department of Justice Continued Stonewalling on Wiretapping Questions

WASHINGTON -- The American Civil Liberties Union today condemned the continued refusal of the Justice Department to answer basic questions about the National Security Agency’s warrantless program to wiretap Americans. The Department today sent over its answers to questions about the illegal program from the majority and minority members of the House Judiciary Committee.

The following can be attributed to Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:

“The Department of Justice continues to refuse to give honest answers to basic questions, such as how many Americans have had their phone calls and e-mails listened to or read by the NSA without a warrant. Congress and the American people are entitled to the truth. Knowing how many innocent Americans have had their privacy invaded by this lawless program is not an 'operational' secret--it's the very question a less partisan and more independent Congress asked and got answered in the 1970s. That's when Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to try to prevent warrantless spying on Americans from happening again.

Could This Be The Real Reason The ACLU Are So Adamant About Destroying The Wiretapping Program?

Question #45. Are any communications between attorneys and their clients or doctors and patients being captured?

The Terrorist Surveillance Program targests communications for intercepts only when one party is outside the United States and there is probable cause to believe that at least one party is a member or agent of al Qaeda or an affiliated terrorist orginization. Although the program does not specifically target the communications of attorneys or physicians, calls involving such persons would not be categorically excluded from interception if they met these criteria.

The ACLU has no more standing to demand answers from DOJ than I do.

The ACLU thinks the U.S government should NEVER listen into calls involving Al Qaeda. No wonder they're upset at today's answers.

Precisely.

These idiots from the ACLU are not interested in the truth. Complaints about stonewalling aren't even a good smokescreen. The body of the article shows they have clearly made up their minds that the president has broken the law. It's part of their "smear the president" campaign in everything he says or does.

It's time to outlaw these ba$tards! I have nothing but distain for these traitorous pukes! Militant

The ACLU is disgusting. They demand answers from the Justice Dept for a program that saves lives while at the same time demanding the release of enemy combatants who have undoubtedly taken American lives.

Reporter(s) for Time Magazine have been communicating with AQ. This was presented as fact in a Frontline documentary about the "insurgency" (even though they admit that it was a movement of foreign soldiers committing jihad, not an insurgency of Iraqis opposing the government).

The media doesn't want their treasonous actions exposed.
