New Yorkers and Californians breathe in the dirtiest air in the nation and face higher cancer risks than the rest of the nation, according to the latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Oregon, Washington, D.C. and New Jersey had the third, fourth and fifth worst air in the nation, respectively, the EPA said.

Rural residents of Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana breathed the cleanest air.

New York's cancer risk is estimated to be 68 residents per million.

In California, the risk is 66 residents per million.

They don't call it Big Sky country for nothing.

I miss the smell of the air in the mountains. The mix of dust and exhaust here in Vegas leaves a little to be desired.

Ever since I moved to the beach in North Carolina from New Jersey, I have nothing but sinus problems. Lived most of my life in NJ/NY area with no problems. Go figure.

I did not realize that Oregon had the third dirtiest air in the nation.

I doubt if the EPA monitors are east of the Cascades which would be 2/3 of the state. Mostly likely in the Willamette and Columbia river valleys, and in the latter probably around the aluminum smelters.

Timber, mining and railroads have almost completely disappeared, manufacturing isn't in much better shape, oil & gas exploration is more legal headache than it's worth and farming has turned into a non-stop hassle with bison/bear/wolf fanciers.

Another ten or fifteen years of this kind of "progress", and the only people left in either Wyoming or Montana will be selling tourist trap crap to the visitors to the new EPA/Sierra Club Big Sky Theme Park.

If I find it, I will post it here.

Unless someone else finds it first...

Keep in mind that the "latest data" in this article is extremely misleading. These conclusions come from a computer model, not from any actual measurements.

EPA is not trust worthy...IMHO.

This study could be faked for many different reasons.

Locations of test sites, stupid techs, bad science, fraud...
