President George W. Bush tried to counter strong opposition among many Republicans to his guest-worker plan on Saturday, arguing that allowing immigrants to take jobs Americans don't want adds to "economic vitality."
Bush weighed in on the immigration issue in his weekly radio address as the Senate was days away from taking up debate on the subject. The president favors including a temporary work visa in broad legislation that would also bolster border enforcement. But some Republicans view the guest-worker plan as a back-door amnesty for illegal immigrants and prefer an approach that focuses solely on toughening border security and cracking down on illegal immigration.
Bush, who this week urged all sides to tone down their rhetoric in the emotional debate, said securing borders was a top priority of immigration reform but invoked the country's history as "a nation of immigrants" to argue for a balanced approach.
"Comprehensive immigration reform requires a temporary worker program that will relieve pressure on our borders," Bush said.
"As we debate the immigration issue, we must remember there are hardworking individuals, doing jobs that Americans will not do, who are contributing to the economic vitality of our country," he added.

They have no second amendment, now, do they? We had one civil war, to settle an issue as big as this, perhaps another will settle this one.

we must remember there are individuals here illegally, doing jobs at a rate of pay that Americans can't live on, and many of the business interests backing me make a killing off of that.
Importing a large third world underclass unfamiliar with this country's constitutional heritage is going to make it worse. Our children's future will be nothing like what we had.
It's kind of hard to weld the pipe unless you stop the flow first. All this guest worker, amnesty, green card, etc, issues are just a ploy to keep the congress from doing anything about the ILLEGAL migration of immigrants to America. We have existing laws already on the books that allows immigrants to get temp. work visa's and we have laws on the books that makes it illegal to work here without one unless a US Citizen. If ANY employer is caught with workers that don't have the current SS card or temp. work visa then they are in violation and should be punished to an effect that hurts their business. If the feds would cut the freebies, free health care, welfare, etc, then that would help stop the flow of illegals that have no intention of getting the current temp. work visa to work here. I'm not sure why there is any mention of "guest workers" since temp. work visa's are already on the books and is the same thing but all they have to do is enforce it and make it work.

You're lucky. Most could be fired for saying that. We're lucky to be able to speak our minds on the Internet, for now. But one can imagine a day in the not too distant future when even the Internet is lost to us. Congress approves of shipping Internet computing infrastructure and search engine technology to China that enables the government to restrict access to information there. Why not here? Why not in the name of diversity and multiculturalism, in tolerance and "welcome?"

The concept of a censure is actually starting to appeal to me. Frist will play his game, but this could have a political backfire. The GOP recognizes that their position is dire. Conservatives demand "law and order" along with border security. The liberals are waiting with bated breath for another attack on America. When that happens, the GOP will NEVER recover. The White House must now either back an amnesty and registration scheme while the remaining base evaporates, or go the Tancredo route. I will put every peso in Texas on the amnesty, with congress reducing funding for border security.

Bush has been pathetic on this issue. I've never been more disapointed with a Republican president on any single issue than I have been with Bush on the borders. A lot of folks like to talk about Jeb in 08, but I will never vote for another one of those elitist RINO's.
The failure to get amnesty for illegals (under any name) was the reason GW got re-elected. Had he pushed it through during his first term, John Kerry would have been inaugurated in January 04.
Now that GW is not facing re-election, he is sending a clear message to his supporters who are against amnesty for illegals (under whatever name GW wants to call it). That clear message is: "Up your!"
Bush will never go the Tancredo route, he'll keep pushing for an amnesty that's not an amnesty until he's out. If the democrats win Congress they'll give him what he wants just before beginning their impeachment proceedings.
I enjoyed voting against Schwartz when he was seeking the GOP nomination for governor.
Is that RINO facing any primary opposition?
They need illegals to drive down the wages of the jobs that do exist. Which is so much better for the American economy, but not so good for Americans.
