Canada's annual seal hunt, the focus of a major protest effort by animal activists, will start on Saturday and could last longer than usual because the ice floes on which the seals gather are in poor condition, officials said on Thursday.
Canada says a total of 325,000 harp seal pups can be shot or clubbed to death this year. The first stage of the hunt, which takes place on ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's East Coast, will account for just over 90,000 animals.
Activists, who say the killing is cruel and unnecessary, say they will film the proceedings. The hunt officially starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

Remember this guy?
"If nobody comes down here and buys a car in the next hour, I'm gonna club this baby seal. That's right. I'm gonna club this seal to make a better deal. You know I'll do it, too, 'cause I'm crazy."

I like Martin Short and Mike Myers ... but I'll go along with your take on Ann Murray. Her songs are an act of war.

When my eldest son was a toddler he used to watch Sesame Street on PBS in the mornings while I got some chores done. I walk by and see horror on his face and enter the room to see what he is watching on PBS. He was watching the "seal hunt" in living color. Man, that had him worried for days and that was the last time I did chores while he watched television alone.

Pups are killed before they have sufficient swimming skills and are afraid to leave the ice...making them easier targets for cullers.
The arguments for culling the animals is that they eat too many cod and deplete the fishing stores...
Counter arguments are that only 2% of their diet is cod and only during certain times of the year and in certain locations
much of their diet also includes predators of cod...
Another argument is that this is socialism's cruel and mercenary answer for solving area unemployment problems..
Why they club the pups..I don't know...perhaps they are afraid of hunters shooting one another accidentally or ricochets off the ice?
Most likely because it's cheaper than buying bullets...

Its a slaughter. Those seals cannot escape. I'm sorry but when hunters hunt their prey their prey has a 50/50 chance of escaping or at least trying to. These baby seals cannot even move hardly. That's slaughter in my book.

Ping. I won't post any comments about your county's hunt.

A seal walks into a bar in Toronto.
The bartender inquires: "What's your pleasure?"
The seal replies: "ANYTHING but Canadian Club !!"

They are shot.
Using a club has been illegal for many years now.

And...? So...? What's your point? Slaughter, hunt, whatever - it's not like they're doing this for fun (as opposed to say shooting deer, lured by corn and apples, from a stand in a tree). It's just an industry, and the only good argument against it that I would pay any attention to is if it is unsustainable. Other than that it's no more brutal or cruel than what goes on in countless slaughterhouses every day.

If they were not so cute or so young, no one would care.Which is why the activists continue to lie about what really goes on. The practice of taking seal pups was banned in the 1980s so only ADULT seals are harvested. That hasn't stopped Greenpeace from using photos of the cute little baby seals, though.

It's illegal to hunt the pups. Only adult seals are culled.

The reason they're clubbed to death is because it's less damage to the skins. The reason they're killed between the ages of 12 and 24 to 30 days is because their skin is fresh. It's unmarked and it's going to be used for the fashion industry for seal skins.

It's illegal to kill the whitecoat pups -- has been since 1987. The continued use of these images by the anti-hunt organizations is the same type of willful distortion we see every day in various forms of anti-American propaganda. Conservatives should know better than to fall for such media trickery. (I'm not referring to the message in the words accompanying the picture).
The clubs are still used -- as well as shooting for the larger seals. The clubs kill at least as humanely as any of the methods used in slaughterhouses. In fact, many slaughterhouses continue to use sledge hammers to stun or kill animals. The only difference is that the seal slaughter is conducted in the open air, instead of behind closed doors.
Seal meat is used for food. Seal skins are used for clothing. Seal skin boots are popular in the far north, because they are very warm, and waterproof. (The Inuit wear the fur on the inside.)

Ironic how stupid, hypocritical liberals on both sides of the border - including especially the PETA vermin! - claim to have such a problem with the seal hunt and yet so many of them completely favor the wholesale killing of dogs.
Hardly surprising when they also claim to be be completely against racism & sexism while whining non-stop for so-called "affirmative action" programs !!!
