It's illegal to kill the whitecoat pups -- has been since 1987. The continued use of these images by the anti-hunt organizations is the same type of willful distortion we see every day in various forms of anti-American propaganda. Conservatives should know better than to fall for such media trickery. (I'm not referring to the message in the words accompanying the picture).

The clubs are still used -- as well as shooting for the larger seals. The clubs kill at least as humanely as any of the methods used in slaughterhouses. In fact, many slaughterhouses continue to use sledge hammers to stun or kill animals. The only difference is that the seal slaughter is conducted in the open air, instead of behind closed doors.

Seal meat is used for food. Seal skins are used for clothing. Seal skin boots are popular in the far north, because they are very warm, and waterproof. (The Inuit wear the fur on the inside.)

Yesterday's thread re the seal hunt states that

Canada banned the killing of the youngest seals, less than 12 days old, in 1987
Does this mean that they stop being "whitecoat pups" after 12 days?

I completely support the seal hunt. It is proper wildlife management of a renewable resource.
