Pierre, SD (LifeNews.com) -- A South Dakota Indian tribe is throwing a monkey wrench into the state's plans to ban virtually all abortions in the state. Should the ban become law, one tribe says it will open up an abortion business on their tribal lands, which wouldn't be subjected to the abortion ban.
Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota, says Sioux nation sovereignty means the new ban doesn't apply. As a result, she said she will lead an effort to build a Planned Parenthood abortion center at the Pine Ridge Reservation.
To me, it is now a question of sovereignty, she told Tim Giago who runs a web site called Indianz.com.
I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction," Fire Thunder said.
A former nurse and health care worker, Fire Thunder is the first woman president of the Sioux nation.
Sitting Bull, yes, THAT Sitting Bull, was murdered at his cabin by those "Tribal Police" for advocating that Lakota children learn in schools what white children were learning so that the Lakota children could compete in economic endeavor. Cecilia Fire Thunder sees to it that the spirit of murder lives on as parasites upon decent Lakota people. Next, she will probably offer Planned Barrenhood a piece of the casino action.
Besides, whaddya want? I know enough to put my shoes on my head when I get dressed in the morning! That's more than Red Cloud can remember to do these days.
You one sharp cookie in middle of night to catch old Black Elk error in about one minute!!!!! Want 'em you on my side in next war! This time, we win!

BLACKelk

I would vote for that,bannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng!
When Cecelia Fire Thunder takes over as president of South Dakotas largest Indian reservation during December, the 58-year-old nurse and domestic violence program director will be prepared for the skeptics. As the first woman to lead the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Fire Thunder knows her activities will be scrutinized within the tribe and across the state.
Ive heard all that stuff, that women have no business in leadership, she said during an on-the-run interview that flowed from a Pine Ridge convenience store into a car driven by her son and on to a table in the break room at an office that deals with domestic violence. The running commentary was sandwiched around a live radio interview done by telephone and was interrupted several times by well-wishers who hadnt seen Fire Thunder since she bested longtime American Indian Movement activist Russell Means in the Nov. 2 tribal election.
Im completely aware of what Ive gotten into. I walked into this campaign with my eyes wide open, Fire Thunder said. I know some traditionalists say a man should do this, and Im aware of the negativity in places, of the discrimination about being a woman. But the people chose me. Its not about me anymore. Its about what skills I have that can get people working together and that can maybe improve our situation on the reservation. We have a lot of problems, no, make that a lot of challenges
~snip~Women are ascending to tribal leadership roles around the country. When Herminia Frias became the first woman elected to lead the Pascua Yaqui of Arizona this year, the Arizona Daily Star noted that her victory meant that nine of that states 22 federally recognized tribes had female leaders.
In 1985, Wilma Mankiller became the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Kathryn Harrison was the first female to lead the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde in Oregon.

As long as the war is about old movies, we're invincible.
Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, had a goal to eliminate what she considered to be the impure breeds in America - blacks, Catholics and Indians.
It is one of the reasons she had to disband her first organization - it was too closely tied to the Nazi Super Race of the 1930s as she was trying to make an American Super Race. One of the reasons Planned Parenthood came into existence - to create a new organization without ties to Nazi Germany that the National Birth Control League had...
We should remember Margaret Sanger for her quest for racial purity - along with the same quest by Adolph Hitler - birds of a feather...
This is a decision that is for the separate and sovereign states
That's an interesting point. I still don't expect to see any state that has set up guidelines against abortion, to simply allow an 'internal' 'nation' to circumvent the intent of their laws. I'm not sure how this will play out, but I do expect to see some reaction from such states, which may include something along the lines of what I've mentioned.
"No problem, just set up a blockade of the roads leading into the Indian nation."
Yep - every time they get to hissin and pissin here against the state of New Mexico about how they're going to divvy up the gambling money, I always say fine, shut off their electricity and water and see how fast they become reasonable.
Not that NM pols have that kind of backbone.
In our state (California), we voted on whether to allow gaming on Indian lands. I supported the idea at the time. I reasoned that the Indians had had it pretty tough, and I wanted to see them develop a hefty income stream.
They did develop a hefty income stream. Then they wanted to run state politics with portions of that heavy income stream.
These days it seem there's no easy answer to just about any issue.
Only if he can keep his view from the Christians and gun rights voters long enough. Not likely, but if say he does and gets the Republican nominee, the press will then run with his views nightly once he is the nominee and the Christians and gun voters will sit this one out allowing a dem president. It is past performances like this that we have earned the name the stupid party.
One more (and last) time...I am not IN LOVE with abortion. I'm a realist. I think they should be extremely hard to get, of course no late term abortion and parental notification is a must. I just think complete outlawing of it, in today's world, would be a big mistake. But you know that, we've talked about it. If it makes you think your argument is PEOPLE WHO LOVE ABORTION vs. PEOPLE WHO WANT IT OUTLAWED, then keep your delusions up.
