Hey, didn't you see that these guys were going to start arguing that it's our responsibility to protect the Chi-com access to Arabian oil?

I told you we have a bunch who were fully aware of the Chi-com interest in American ports, but they don't care. They are pro-Chi-com.

Mass hysteria is NOT a pretty sight.

The consequences be damned crowd, aren't all that far removed from the cut off your nose to spite your face one.

He's changed his mind since those heady days. When he drafted the legislation to bounce Dubai out of those terminal management contracts, HE DID NOT INCLUDE provisions that would kick the Chi-coms out.

He's turned!

Not true.

Go back a few more years to another port controversy involving a state-owned foreign company leasing the old Long Beach Navel Base, which the defense department was turning over to the Port of Long Beach for civilian cargo. The port, in turn, sought to lease it to COSCO, the state-owned Chinese shipping firm.

The right wing went bonkers over the deal, accusing the Clinton administration of wanting to turn the former naval base over to the People’s Liberation Army or worse. San Diego Rep. Duncan Hunter managed to insert a clause in a defense appropriations bill to kill the deal.

COSCO simply moved next door to the Port of Los Angeles where it has run one or more of its container terminals there without controversy and without any threats to our national security for half a dozen years now. So one wonders what the opponents of the Long Beach deal really accomplished.

Strangely, I haven’t noticed Rep. Hunter being in the forefront of the opposition to the Dubai ports deal, considering the leading role he played in scotching the Long Beach deal, not to mention that he chairs the House Armed Services Committee and presumably is interested in national security.

If CFIUS is not qualified, who are you going to put in charge?

Should we have a national referendum or just let the old coots at Free Republic decide?

What a GREAT idea. We should just take what we want in other countries.

It's so fun to live life inside a textbook. So if the Arabs decided to cut off all oil shipments, that would be just fine with you, right?

but without transparency to the CFIUS process, there is no way to determine whether its "rubber stamping" something, or has conducted an actual investigation - producing results, answers to specific questions, etc.

Gotta keep the Chinese happy so we can keep up the flow of toys for the grand-kids at market prices.

A few years later, other tenants at the [Long Beach, CA] port vacated space and Cosco was able to build its own terminal, says Art Wong, public information office for the Port of Long Beach.

That terminal is operated by a joint venture between Cosco and a U.S. company, Stevedoring Services of America. "Cosco is the majority lease holder with 51 percent, says Wong.

I think I read that COSCO is also looking to obtain terminal services in Boston. COSCO ships bring in lots of containers, even where COSCO doesn't have majority interest in the terminal.

15 points.

Bush's approval rating amongst republicans (the people that count to him) went from 90% to 75%, just over that one issue. ugly.

Why would they do that? They can't eat the oil.

What do you mean "if?"

It's proven to be nothing more than a rubber stamp.

Do you honestly believe that there has only been one deal in the history of this intra-governmental process that had potentially negative national security implications?

That CFIUS has been correct in every single one of those instances?

Why are you investing such blind faith in the government?

Shouldn't we be asking for some accountability?

How about as disgusting as a priest retching during communion.

It's freaky the stuff that goes on in this small world. Do you guess Abdullah has ever been to a Texas BBQ?

"Most of the huff-and-puffers on this site weren't even aware of COSCO's role in 14 ports on the West Coast, or that it had been in that role for nearly ten years!"

I, myself, was not. I'm not sure about others here. I can't speak for them. I personally thank you, and others here for continually bringing that up. Now that can be addressed (and likely will be). You're doing one heck of a job. Thank You!

Why are you investing such blind faith in the government?

You ought to ask yourself that question.

You don't trust the government, yet you want them to determine who can, and who cannot, do business in the United States.
