The Israeli Lobby
London Review of Books ^ | March 10, 2006 | John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt

Posted on 03/19/2006 6:36:12 PM PST by Tangaray

This article describes how we got into the Iraq war under the influcence of the Israeli Lobby, and how they are trying to get us to go to war with Iran, in the interest of Israel, and its American Israeli supporters. Lengthy but very enlightening!

From the book:

"The first Gulf War revealed the extent to which Israel was becoming a strategic burden. The US could not use Israeli bases without rupturing the anti-Iraq coalition, and had to divert resources (e.g. Patriot missile batteries) to prevent Tel Aviv doing anything that might harm the alliance against Saddam Hussein. History repeated itself in 2003: although Israel was eager for the US to attack Iraq, Bush could not ask it to help without triggering Arab opposition. So Israel stayed on the sidelines once again."

Uh huh:

"Today on Ivry's embassy office wall is a large black-and-white photograph taken by satellite 10 years after the raid, at the time of the Gulf War. It shows the wreckage of the reactor complex, which is still surrounded by a high, thick wall that was supposed to protect it. Trees are growing where the reactor dome had been.

The picture has this handwritten inscription. "For Gen. David Ivry, with thanks and appreciation for the outstanding job he did on the Iraqi nuclear program in 1981 -- which made our job much easier in Desert Storm." The author of the inscription signed it: "Dick Cheney, Sec. of Defense 1989-93."

This 'scholarly' paper conforms with the widely held belief of both the left and many on the right in the UK - that a Jewish Neoconservative cabal runs the US in Israel's interest. The mainstream right in the UK are essentially Buchananites.

These threads also cover the Walt/Mearsheimer paper:

The Israeli Lobby

I liked it better when it was called "The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion."

How absurd. Israel was not threatened a bit by Iraq in 2003, or any time since the Gulf War. Certainly no more than they would have been able to handle easily. We never would have gone near Iraq were it not for 9/11. Syria and Iran are Israel's main threats. We have't done squat about Iran. Israel tried to get to Syria through Lebanon in 1982 and the U.S. shut them down. So much for the "Israeli lobby" then. The U.S. is now trying like mad to install a terror state next to Israel. So much for the "Israeli lobby" now. Total bullshit.

That's not how the Reagan folks saw it at the time of the Osirik attack. James Baker went ballistic.

The article is a crock, but protecting Israel from the IslamoNazis just makes good sense for the future of Western civilization and our self-respect.

Israel also provided urgent intelligence to Britain and the US at the time that Saddam had WMD's! Why?

Looks like the article has struck a few nerves here. Truth has a way of doing that.
