Baghdad -- Om Hussein, wrapped in her black abaya, lists the contents of the family's walk-in storage closet: three 175-pound cases of rice, two 33-pound cases of cooking fat, six cases of canned tomatoes, three crates of assorted legumes, a one-month supply of drinking water, frozen chicken livers in the freezer. And in the garage, jerry cans filled with fuel are piled floor to ceiling.
Om Hussein, who was reluctant to give her full name, and her Shiite family are preparing for war. They've stocked up on food. They bought a Kalashnikov rifle and a second car -- so that there is space for all 13 members of their extended family should they need to flee in a hurry.
"We are afraid of what will happen in the coming days," she says. "Maybe there will be a monthlong curfew, or maybe fighting in the streets will force my family to stay in the house for days at a time."
In the past week, President Bush has tried to assure Americans that Iraq has stepped back from the brink of civil war. "Iraqis have shown the world they want a future of freedom and peace," he told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies on Monday.
Few Iraqis, however, share Bush's view that the crisis has been averted. They are readying themselves for the worst, fleeing likely flash points, stockpiling weapons and basic foodstuffs, barricading their neighborhoods, and drawing lines in the sand delineating Sunni and Shiite territory.

Uh... I was trying to make that point in my initial post. I got called Murtha. No good deed goes unpunished.
The whacko lefty reporter was trying to say there is a civil war coming in Iraq and that is a bad thing. I see it another way. I see ordinary citizens getting fed up with the terrorists and doing something about it. This is great news.
I guess I was a little too subtle for some people. Sorry. I'll use a bigger club next time.
We really ought to be more grateful. Perhaps a letter of appreciation is in order??
I pray daily for peace in Iraq, but it's always good to get a reminder of how important it is to keep this in the front of our minds. I pray for God's blessings for those who work towards good...and God's justice for those who work towards evil.

...which can reasonably be taken one of two ways. Either you think the Iraqis have not yet been fighting (addressed by yours truly w/the newspaper reply), or it's time to let only the Iraqis do the fighting (addressed by Allegra with the Murtha comment).
And now you're upset by the whole traumatic ordeal (refer back to my stripper comment).

That said, their actions seem prudent in my estimation. Everyone should have a little extra for unforseen events.

In addition to a cell phone and wi-fi laptop, both of which may be temporarily down, a Manhattan resident might have been wise to have stocked:
1 standard telephone and at least one telephone jack.
Candles
Assorted batteries
Cash & coin currency
Water
First aid kit
Can foods
Pet food
Toilet paper
A box of large "Salvage" bags.
Ample prescribed medicines
Portable radio/TV (battery operated)
Sirius Sat. portable radio.
A bottle of Vodka and a manual on how to steal a boat.
These are kind of 101, but I didn't see them on the list...
(I'd have firearms and ammo on my list there as well.) At least a machete or a camp axe with the laws there...a weapon which can be used as a tool, too.
Cigarettes (for barter if you do not smoke), and coffee are good to have also.
I'd make sure you have the means to start a fire (heat and cooking if you have to bug out).

Your reply is bringing tears to my eyes--may the American and Iraqi children of today grow up to become friends and steadfast allies.
Who knows? With luck and prayer, perhaps someday a parent wouldn't blink an eye at the thought of sending their high school student on a school trip to Baghdad, or college students to do a semester over there. There are wonderful possibilities.
