In the aftermath of the Dubai ports deal, President Bush's approval rating has hit a new low and his image for honesty and effectiveness has been damaged. Yet the public uncharacteristically has good things to say about the role that Congress played in this high-profile controversy.
Most Americans (58%) believe Congress acted appropriately in strenuously opposing the deal, while just 24% say lawmakers made too much of the situation.
The new Pew survey underscores the public's alarm over the prospect that an Arab-owned company could have operated U.S. ports. There was broad opposition to the proposed deal from across the political spectrum, including two-to-one disapproval among conservative Republicans (56%-27%).
Bush's overall approval measure stands at 33%, the lowest rating of his presidency.
The president's ratings for handling of several specific issues, particularly terrorism, have also declined sharply. Just 42% now approve of Bush's job in handling terrorist threats, an 11-point drop since February. In January 2005, as Bush was starting his second term, 62% approved of his handling of terrorist threats.
Bush's personal image also has weakened noticeably, which is reflected in people's one-word descriptions of the president. Honesty had been the single trait most closely associated with Bush, but in the current survey "incompetent" is the descriptor used most frequently.
Congress has drawn bipartisan praise from the American public for its response to the possible transfer of U.S. port operations to a United Arab Emirates company. Nearly two-thirds of Democrats (68%), and roughly half each of independents (53%) and Republicans (49%) said Congress acted appropriately, though a third of Republicans felt too much was made of the issue.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!
It's not about how the voter self-identifies - it's how the media is lying about the numbers.
Like I said .. I give up .. you all are just too stupid to figure out you are being lied to and you're trying your best to justify what the media is saying as truth - IT'S NOT!!
I'm not having any difficulty at all with understanding that CBS is lying about the numbers. They're over-loading the polls with an unrealistic and disproportionate number of dems IN ORDER TO GET THE ANSWER THEY WANT. That's what you don't get.
Yes. The fact is that George Bush is NOT,and never has been, a true conservative. He's been a reckless spender, hasn't vetoed a single pork-laden bill, sponsored the biggest entitlement since LBJ (prescription drugs) which will saddle future generations with an $18 trillion unfunded liability. and has escalated the trade deficit to record proportions by outsourcing jobs and failing to protect domestic native industry. Now - at last! - Republican conservatives who believe in smaller, less intrusive government, reduced spending, and less bureaucratic government - are free from Bush and can freely run independently as true conservatives! Heretofore, they've been loyal to Bush at the cost of their conservative principles by giving him the benefit of the doubt. But now that Bush's "compassionate conservatism" (whatever that meant!) has been exposed as a political and economic fraud, true conservatives are ready to come forth and present a Reagonite agenda! It's long overdue and it can rally the conservative base that's been too long constrained by the pseudo-conservatism of Bush -- a man with no sincere or lasting political convictions of any sort- other than to be elected.
If I gave the impression of being condescending towards you then I apologize. That was not my intent.
I would not be posting here, and expressing my discomfort with Bush, if I did not care about the conservative agenda.
Bush has a chance to reinvigorate his administration in the same way that Reagan did. These poll numbers should be a wake up call to him. But for now, and unless something changes, he is hurting OUR conservative cause. The polls are an indicator of that.
Sometimes, it's hard to weather the storm. It is SO much easier to be "popular." Bill Clinton is loved by millions. But he is respected by very few.
Well, let's just word the poll question honestly.
Do you want Arabs in our country and do you blame the President for seeming friendly toward to these Middle Eastern people?
Still can't accept that the real number is 46% - okay - you can have any number you want - evidently you approve of the way CBS runs the polls.
Fine with me .. but they're lying and I know that you know they're lying but you just want to make me think I'm the one who can't figure out the numbers.
Let me see - if I add 12% more dems than repubs .. what percentage JA will I get for Bush - because all those 12% are Bush-haters .. so that will give me the LOW POLLING NUMBERS I WANT.
Are you really going to tell me you can't figure that out - even all by yourself ..??
Sorry .. but your intent was intentional! And I caught it - and I didn't like it - and I don't believe you even know what a conservative agenda really is.
Reagan's lowest Gallup JA rating of 35%

"... it's just that more people are self-identifying as democrats and independents, at the expense of republicans, right now."
Well .. that's a nice story but I'm not buying it. And .. pray tell what would be the reason for this sudden upsurge in dem self-identification ..??
Could it be the lying, lying Hillary Clinton and her husband who cannot get their stories straight .. or could it be the 11 democrats who were just convicted for fraud, and other crimes .. most having to do with ELECTION FRAUD .. or would it be because Howard Dean has spent almost all the DNC money .. or is it because most of the normal dem donors are sending their dollars to Hillary - via George Soros ..?? Hmmmm?? That sure would be cause for a lot of dems to want to identify with this party.
Give me a break.
You make a false statement about Reagan, based on information that never existed and now you say you don't really care. LOL Next time I'll know not to go through the trouble of posting the facts to you, cause you don't care.
Btw, some of the posts I've seen from Dr.Deb has used polling data that is bogus. All she wants to do is tear down Reagan, to make Dubya look better. No matter what anyone says, as with all President's, history will be the final judge and have the last word on Bush. His success is America's success. So hoping Bush makes a big comeback is in the best interests of every American.
Historic fact: Bush is no Reagan and never will be.
Harriet Miers, the ports deal, the war. That's why more people are identifying as Dems.
If you read the other questions and other polls, you'll see it all ties together nicely. People think the ports deal was a stinker, and they think Iraq is going poorly.
I agree with the majority. You don't. It doesn't automatically your view the majority view.
Sorry .. didn't mean to leave the rest of you out:

Well .. when he got re-elected in 2004 - it was 45% - so I would say 46% is good considering all the garbage the dems and the media have thrown at him .. and the lies they have told about him.
Goodnight
