100,000 people rally over controversial immigration bill
ABC7 News ^ | 3-10-06 | ABC

Chicago police say as many as 100,000 protestors are gathering outside the Chicago Federal Center to voice their concerns about a house bill that would tighten immigration laws. The massive demonstration has blocked many streets in the Loop.

The border security bill would make it illegal to assist any undocumented immigrant. That measure is drawing the attention of numerous groups and lawmakers on both sides of the issue.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Chicago Federal Center to protest the house bill 4437. They believe the bill discriminates against undocumented residents and those who try to help them and it robs them of a chance at the American dream.

Oh, that picture infuriates me! Saying "No" and naming the bill in Congress. Who the hell are these foreign outsiders to comment on what bills we should pass??!!

This is what happens when you let arrogant strangers hang around, pretty soon they start trying to run the place. I'm not at all convinced that this rally will benefit them, though. Perhaps quite the opposite.

Hispanic and Asian Populations Surge, and Spread

http://www.newhousenews.com/archive/tilove030706.html

And in Chicago to which I can attest:

Hispanics become area's largest minority group

By Daniel Rome Levine
March 10, 2006

(Crain’s) — Fueled by high birth rates and immigration, Hispanics have overtaken blacks for the first time as the largest minority group in the Chicago metro area, according to a Brookings Institution study released this month.

Brookings’ analysis of 2004 Census Bureau data found that Hispanics now account for 18.4% of the metro area’s population, compared to 18% for blacks. As recently as 2000, blacks were the largest minority group, accounting for 18.4% of the population vs. 16.5 % for Hispanics.

The study’s author, William H. Frey, calls Chicago a “prototype” in that it has been able to attract new immigrants at the same time its white and black populations are dwindling.

WASHINGTON -- Many immigration officers handling requests for green cards, citizenship and other immigration benefits do not have access to key law enforcement and national security databases, said a top federal security official who quit over the issue.

The officers' access to the databases, which would allow them to check whether an applicant had a criminal record or was on the terrorism watch list, was cut off because the government has failed to complete required background checks on the immigration adjudicators.

You could be right; perhaps when so many show up, it might get some notice.

If the press would report it.

Actually, by having us pay for their benefits, aren't they robing us of our American dream??

"100,000? Don't these people have jobs?"

I grew up in Michigan right across Lake Michigan from Chicago.

IIRC, the first strawberrys aren't until LATE April, and early May, and the "season" winds up with the grapes in late September, early October.

This is what they are protesting:

On March 27, the Senate will begin debate on H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. The result is likely to be a civil liberties emergency on par with anything ever seen in the United States. Consequences will be drastic for thousands of employers and millions of families in communities such as Salinas across the nation.

HR 4437 was adopted by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives in December. This measure would:

Make unauthorized presence in the country a federal crime, barring the undocumented population - including 1.6 million children - from legal immigration, while gutting due process rights.

Criminalize family members, employers, unions, churches, charitable groups and others for assisting illegal immigrants.

Grant state and local law enforcement agencies the authority to enforce immigration laws, destroying trustful relationships law enforcement depends on.

Define minor crimes as aggravated felonies when committed by immigrants - including legal immigrants - exposing them to deportation.

Require all employers to verify eligibility to work through a master database, and raise fines against those who fail to comply.

Build a high-tech fence along 700 miles of the 2,000 mile-long U.S.-Mexico border.

Yes, the crappy press. But it is front and center on Drudge right now, so millions will see it. Should be interesting to watch what the blogs do with it. And Savage! Speaking of which I think I'll tune it to him right now.

With the Dubai situation diffused, this could jump right into the vacuum and be Bush's next big headache. I certainly hope that is the case.

An increasing Hispanic population does not automatically translate into greater political clout, says Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., who has represented the 4th Congressional District, an area just west of the Loop, since 1992 -- and is considering a mayoral run next year. “Growing numbers do not mean growing power unless you organize,” he says.

One of Mr. Gutierrez’s top priorities has been running so-called citizenship campaigns to naturalize Hispanic immigrants and get them registered to vote.

Apparently we're close to reaching a point where we no longer have control over our own nation.

How many traditional issues could we generate 100,000 people for in a mob?

A "Populist Uprising"

You know this is exactly what it's going to take, us overthrowing precisely as a third world country!

Do you remember this old friend....near the bottom of my home page here:

WINKER'S CREED

No Person can be considered a "Contributor" to America un-less they are Identified, fingerprinted, placed on the Tax rolls and Social Security with a permanent Address making them a legal Tax paying Citizen; subject to all the rights and provisions this Country provides to its citizens. Otherwise they continue to be a scab and a botch "WE THE PEOPLE"are obligated to support.

This is a pay as you go society and not a free lunch. If you live here you work here speak the FIRST Language and swear allegiance to the Constitution then you get to share equally in a system "EVERBODY" Supports and pays into! Time to come out of the woodworks and live in the open or follow your noses back across the Borders!

it "robs" them of a chance at the American dream.

Interesting word to use--robs---to imply something "illegal" or "wrong". What about entering our country illegally and "expecting" to be treated like a immigrant who came in legally according to our laws.
What a bunch of cr@p!
