Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Terror attack tomorrow, warn Indonesians

POLICE have intercepted intelligence suggesting there could be a terrorist attack against Westerners in Indonesia as early as tomorrow. Australians have been warned to reconsider travel to Indonesia, with evidence terrorists are in "advanced stages" of an attack. It is understood telephone intercepts by Indonesian police in the last week picked up chatter of possible suicide bombings on key dates from tomorrow on popular Westerner sites. No sites are named but the threat extends to Bali.

"Internet piracy expert charged in Weston and Norwalk explosions"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WESTON, Conn. -- A 49-year-old father of two known as the "Prince of the Darknet" for his work in computer piracy was in court Monday facing charges that he set off one of a series of powerful explosives in this normally quiet, wealthy town.

Bruce Forest of Weston was ordered held on $2 million bond Monday on numerous weapons charges stemming from an explosion Friday that damaged an unoccupied former service station in Weston.

Forest was expected back before the judge Tuesday on a warrant charging him with another blast Friday at a vacant building in Norwalk, prosecutors said.

"We're at a loss to explain why he was doing this, other than the excitement of blowing things up," said Weston Police Chief Anthony Land.

Authorities have been investigating a series of other powerful explosions that destroyed portable toilets in Weston and Redding dating back to last October and said more charges were likely against Forest.

"He's a threat to society, he's a menace," said prosecutor Robert Hall, who said Forest confessed. "We have a very serious situation here."

Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling said Forest told investigators he was trying to get rid of the explosives.

"He indicated he had a supply of these chemicals and he was trying to get rid of them," Rilling said."

Criminal Aliens

In 1980, our federal and state prisons housed fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. By the end of 1999, these same prisons housed over 68,000 criminal aliens.1 Today, criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and a higher share of all federal prison inmates.2 These prisoners represent the fastest growing segment of the federal prison population.
