Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

The children are part of a "rent-a-family" ploy used by alien smugglers from countries other than Mexico to circumvent a new expedited-removal program for non-Mexican aliens, reports the Washington Times.

Outsmarting the feds, that's something they've had years to practice and get perfect.

***They're counting on a sensible democrat...who doesn't exist.***

Amnesty is not an acceptable solution to the problem. Sugar coating the issue isn't fooling anyone. Americans want their country back. At this juncture, neither political party seems up to the task. The protests held in support of illegals serve only to anger and frustrate voters who are seething at the gall of the protesters and the inaction of our government.

Snip: Camarota pointed to a recent government report showing that very few businesses are fined for hiring illegal immigrants. The government filed only three notices that it intended to fine companies in 2004, down from 417 notices in 1999, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office. Link

Witness tells of plot to poison football beer

Snip: A U.S. informant, testifying at the trial of seven Britons accused of planning bombings in the UK, told a London court on Friday one of the suspects had discussed poisoning beer for sale at British football matches.

Mohammed Babar, 31, a Pakistan-born American who has admitted terrorism-related offences in New York, said Waheed Mahmood also suggested setting up mobile hamburger vans and poisoning the food before handing it over.

Two Indiana counties hotbeds for TB

Snip: Public health officer Dr. Donald Smith told the county commissioners Monday afternoon that Allen and Kosciusko counties were “hotbeds” for the disease. In 2004 Allen County had 24 cases of TB.

Manitoba investigating a cluster of TB cases

Snip: As of March 24, there have been two laboratory-confirmed cases and three presumptive cases of tuberculosis in this cluster.

Virulent new strain of TB sparks alert

Snip: The strain, known as "extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis", or XDR-TB, has the potential to return TB treatment "to the pre-antibiotic era" in which the only treatment was cutting out parts of the lungs. "XDR-TB is cause for concern because it is widely distributed and renders patients virtually untreatable," said Kenneth Castro, director of the division of TB elimination at the Centres for Disease Control.....

Vallejo named hotspot for tb cases

Snippets: Vallejo is among the nation's top 20 tuberculosis "hot spots," and cases of the disease could explode if attention isn't paid to keeping it in check, experts say.

"TB is seen mostly in under-served populations, where there's poverty, and in immigrants from countries with high rates of the disease," said Ron Chapman, Solano County's public health director. "In Solano County, it's mostly from the Philippines, which has a very high rate of TB."

According to the latest statistics, California has 10 of the nation's top 20 metro areas for TB case rates. Besides Vallejo, these include San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Fresno, Los Angeles, Stockton, Sacramento, Ventura and Oakland.

4 Farms quarantined due to TB infected hogs

Snip: The quarantine includes two farms in Putnam County and one each in Logan and Greenbrier counties, agency spokesman Buddy Davidson said. Animals can't be moved on or off the premises until further notice.

The form of tuberculosis carried by the hogs is transmissible to humans through direct contact and through eating improperly cooked meat. Once contracted, the respiratory disease may cause lesions inside the lungs.

Isn't Red Bull that drink that with a lot of caffeine in it?

Yes, that's it.
I've never tried it before and certainly don't intend on trying it now.

Thank you for all the TB education M'Dear

~snips from each TB article

The good news is that these days TB is “completely curable,” Reid said. “Most people who are exposed can fight the infection or fight the germs.”

When people have TB, they may have symptoms such as coughing, loss of appetite, weight loss, night sweats and fever. People with these symptoms should see a doctor to determine the presence of TB.

The strain, known as "extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis", or XDR-TB, has the potential to return TB treatment "to the pre-antibiotic era" in which the only treatment was cutting out parts of the lungs.

TB is also the biggest killer of people with HIV, causing about 13 per cent of AIDS deaths.

But while cases of the debilitating and potentially fatal disease are subsiding in the US, the subset of infections resistant to some or most of the drugs used against TB is burgeoning, the WHO said. Between 2000 and 2004, 20 per cent of bacteria recovered from TB patients and tested at WHO-affiliated labs worldwide were resistant to the two main drugs, isoniazid and rifampin, used to treat the disease, earning them the label "multi-drug resistant".

Overall, the WHO said, 347 cases of extensively drug-resistant TB had been found since 2000. By 2004 this had risen to 11 per cent of all drug-resistant cases in industrialised countries.

With 500,000 people worldwide suffering from multi-drug-resistant TB, the true rate of the extensively resistant form is likely to be higher than the labs have recorded, because many countries do not have the resources for TB surveillance and analysis

The study noted that while the most-resistant TB was identified in all regions, it was most common in Eastern Europe and western Asia.

From your infected hog link: Yikes!

The agency has notified agriculture officials in Ohio, as well as in three other states because Reedy sold one hog in Pennsylvania, six in Kentucky and 14 in Virginia.
State food safety personnel discovered signs of tuberculosis on Tuesday in hogs being processed at custom meat plants. This prompted Douglass to activate the agency's Food and Livestock Safety Team. The team tracked down all but about five to eight of the 200 or so suspect animals, Davidson said.
People who believe they have obtained these animals are advised to contact Douglass' office as soon as possible, and to not eat the meat.

more on your post...

Just three weeks ago, police said the same suspect robbed the same driver, stealing his truck and again, cases of Red Bull.

Police also say the descriptions presented of the suspects are detailed enough that they hope to catch the men this time.

Moderate Afghan Muslim clerics may call for mob execution of Christian convert

Snip: Abdul Rahman, an Afghani former medical aid worker and Christian convert may be “torn to pieces” at the instigation of Muslim clerics whether or not he is legally acquitted of the capital crime of converting away from Islam. Rahman was denounced to authorities for his conversion by his family during a custody dispute.

Infidel Prince Charles Muslim

Snip: He tried to convince US President George W. Bush that Islam is harmless, that is, when Charles visited Mr. Bush in the Oval Office last October. It might have worked. Since then Mr. Bush in his State of the Union address spoke of the killing cult as a "noble faith."

The Sunday Telegraph’s Andrew Alderson stated that Charles "will try to persuade George W Bush and Americans of the merits of Islam this week because he thinks the United States has been too intolerant of the religion since September 11. "The Prince, who leaves on Tuesday for an eight-day tour of the US, has voiced private concerns over America's ‘confrontational’ approach to Muslim countries and its failure to appreciate Islam's strengths."

Islamic charity fundraiser to be held in LA next month

Snippets: On Tuesday, a federal magistrate recommended the release of Abdel-Jabbar Hamdan, 45, of Buena Park.

Hamdan is "ecstatic" about the chance of going home, Tolchin said.

The government alleged the Texas-based charity funneled millions of dollars to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is listed as a terrorist organization. In recommending Hamdan's release, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Johnson noted Hamdan had not been criminally charged and would not be deported anytime soon.
